DORIAN HEADZ (well, one.)
-Gave him some hair. Good work, self.
-No particular reason for printing him, beyond for the hell of it. He's around 2" tall. I put him next to Modern Architecture Solas for scale.
-Solas is a straight-up print of the game mesh, extracted with daitools. Dorian started out as his game mesh, but I prodded his face around some.
-FINALLY got the "milky-white" filament to go just opaque enough not to show shadows. Note to self, you printed him hollow-thick.
-Neglected to run the stl file through the stl fixer. Consequently, the poor fellow has some unseemly seams and a hole in his head.
-But his Solas-friend has some issues too, so we'll leave it at that.
damn fool elf.
By now I'm an expert at pressing five keys in Blender, yeah? So I figured I'd make a chess set where one side was all little Dorians and the other all little Cullens. Because, FUNNY! also CLEVERNESS!
Here's a Dorian pawn. I lost patience before I sculpted his hair, so he's a bit on the egghead side. He'll get hair, I promise.
That pawn is just about an inch tall, and his features came out better than I was expecting -- he looks cleaner in person, I promise -- but I dunno, there's always room for a larger mustache. How big are chess pieces supposed to be?
Tried him in gold, too, but that's even more annoying to photograph.
Also some half-sketches of all the pieces, on the theory that posting this will serve as a reminder when I get totally distracted. ...It's a weak theory, I admit. But making the knights will be fun...
I'll put the obj & stl files somewhere when they're done.
Wait, these happened before the other one. Oh well.
Things!
-Test batch of little Solas heads to play with rotation angle. Purely for aesthetics, at this scale. Aesthetics liked the build-plane-equals-cheek-plane one.
-My friend texted me that he was down the street and would buy me lunch, which, yes -- and the place had pretty red tabletops, and I had the Solases in my pocket, so here are some pictures. They are so pretty!
-If you were friends with me in real life, this is the kind of trauma I'd subject you to. It is lucky for the friend in question that he is...thick skinned? Hard headed? Thank you for the lunch, friend.
-Flush from triumph (also lunch), I tried a Cassandra and Cassandra's-Hair double-plate. Cass made it. Her hair didn't. I put down a new buildtak sheet.
-Tested the new surface by printing a more gianter Solas head. He totally worked. Yay! ...This is when I started getting bored with taking photos, and also could not be arsed to rid him of his scaffolding, and anyway it looks very architectural this way, no?
-Also, last night I accidentally kicked him off the table and his head split open. Sorry dude.
I like making these but forget to upload pics. Sad, but not very.
Things I have done!:
-Learned enough blender to make a full Solas and grab his arms and wave them around. Yay!
-Made eighty billion mesh holes in the process. Stupid non-manifold geometry.
-Eighty billion clickety clicks later, printed some tiny dudes. They're like those green soldiers, except Solas. My coffee beaker is for scale. And because it's pretty.
3D-printed Solas heads. Badass, yeah?
Notes:
Solas' head belongs to Bioware
All meshes extracted with the DAITools ModMaker
HILARIOUSLY, because I couldn't be bothered to go delete them, Solas has retained his teeth and eyeballs. You can see their shadows in the translucent head. NICE DENTURES GRAMPAHREN.
Also I couldn't find a quarter so I used my hand. Yes, I know hands are not a reliable standard. Wait, aren't they used for horses? Also, cf feet. Anyway, the heads are maybe 2" tall.
Technical Notes:
printed on a Micro3D (a little commercial FDM guy)
in MakerGeeks PLA ("milky white"/"dark as night black")
@ 220C
using default M3D software, with raft & M3D-determined supports.
Light is low quality/hollow thick; dark is medium quality/low infill
