Final Post

Throughout this semester I feel I’ve grown tremendously in my awareness and understanding of the world around me. Through our class discussions that challenged our opinions and forced us to accept the beliefs of the people around us, to the CST in Media assignments that made us look at the events of our world through a different more reconstructive view, Everything we’ve done has helped me grow in my view on life. I find that I catch myself when I think something stereotypical and when I hear of tragedies I think more in a way of how do we help US instead of that is terrible for THEM. This class has challenged me morally, and because of it I feel I am a better person, who makes better decisions for not only myself, but all the people around me

I feel migration is a great example of an issue needed to be looked at using the CST of Family, Community, and Participation. It not only challenges us as a political issue but one of morals and perspective. Immigrants are all people who are vulnerable, and as such deserve our aid as we work together as a community to promote the common good and well being of all people. We also are told that people are social, and how we incorporate individuals into our societies and communities affects their dignity and ability to grow as people and in their faith. So, to truly to work to build the kingdom of God and promote the common good we must accept immigrants as part of our communities and families and structure ourselves so that all people can thrive.

Throughout my whole life I have always heard about immigration, and it always felt like a two sided argument. On one hand was the point that they were people that were fleeing from dangerous parts of the world and needed security and shelter, which was our duty to offer. On the other was to seal away our borders and protect our people and our jobs from these people we don’t know who could be a risk to OUR people. It always seemed to me like helping was always the better option but as I got older and began to understand the atrocities of the world, fear of the unknown began to make sense. As I’ve matured I realized that the challenge isn’t getting people to agree it's our job to let them in, its to convince them that immigrants are OUR people too. If we can get people to realize that protecting our community means protecting people across the globe and not just those around us or people who are the same color, we can make amazing strides in working for the common good.

This is a picture showing a protest of people who are advocating for immigration and against the splitting up of families along the borders. They are advocates of the Catholic Social Teaching of Family, Community, and Participation as they are taking a stand to keep together this pillar of family as well as participating in their community to have the way we organize the politics in our community changed to promote the common good for the vulnerable people around us.

In this video with Father Schmitz he discusses the obligations we have as Catholics towards immigrants. He tells us how the Catholic Church states that as a nation becomes more prosperous, they are obliged to welcome in foreigners seeking security and opportunity for better lives as they are able to. He also tells us the nation has the right and responsibility to protect our borders, in most cases, meaning limiting immigration. It shows us the balance that we have to find between our nations security and the well being of the people around us. We are called to organize our laws and policies in a way that allows all people to have dignity and to grow, making it our duty to let people in as it is for the common good.

Today, we hear many stories about the pain that comes from immigration, but there can also be stories of success that relate to the CST of Family, Community, and Participation. In this article, we see the connection between quality of life and family-based immigration. Migrants who came seeking a better life with their family improved their economic position hugely, especially when compared to those who came only to seek jobs. Even though there were more mouths to feed when traveling with a family, it appears that these conditions ultimately helped both economic wellbeing and the standard of living for many refugees.

In this podcast, a Catholic Priest relates the theme of immigration in early American History to today. He speaks of the generosity and call to community heard by George Washington, as he was very open to accepting immigrants and refugees. Today, this is an example that we, as Americans and ethic-abiding Catholics should always try to follow. Today, there is no doubt that the issue is largely more complex than it was in the days of Revolutionary America, but we should take the same approach to encourage freedom of family and society in our modern day and age.

In this article, we see a major theme of Catholic Social teaching demonstrated in both a modern and a historical context. The movement of peoples searching for freedom in the worst of times dates all the way back to the movement of the Jews out of Egypt with the help of Moses. They escaped through the power of God, as searching for their freedom of religion was their right due to their intrinsic value as human beings. Today, there are thousands of immigrants across the globe, whether they be Syrian refugees escaping life threatening persecution or Latin families seeking a better life, and it is our responsibility to welcome them to a life with better opportunities and safety with open arms, as they are all a part of our family of brothers and sisters through Christ. They have a right to participate in society and exercise their God-given rights.

This is a video that breaks down the parts of the CST Call to Family, Community, and Participation and discusses what each means. First is family. Family is about how we support each other and commit ourselves to one another through marriage and building a family and is bound to the well being of the individual being inside a community. Next is Community. Community is how we are called to support and serve one another within a community to promote the common good and happiness of the individual person. Finally is Participation. Participation is the part of the CST that tells us the importance of the individual in the decisions of a society and that it takes all of our individual efforts to build the ideal community where all people have opportunity.

I feel as I talk about this CST I have found lots of information about the family and community aspects but not so much the participation. Although I haven’t found much I feel like this part just makes sense. Participation means being in active member in your community as well as your family, whether it be helping your family around the house, to going to school and becoming a more in depth member of your community, to voting and completing your duty as an american, participation is all about your actions and what YOU individually bring to the table

In my opinion the CST of Call to Family, Community, and Participation is one of the most important and applicable to everyday life. It tells us the importance of building up our family bonds as they are essential to our growth. It tells us the importance of community protecting family so that people can have dignity and potential to grow as members of the community in return. This participation as members is our privilege and responsibility, so that we can all work towards peace, happiness, and the common good.
