Some of " Anne of green gables " quotes I liked:
"There is no use in loving things if you have to be torn from them, is there? And it's so hard to keep from loving things, isn't it?"
"There’s such a lot of different Annes in me. I sometimes think that is why I’m such a troublesome person. If I was just the one Anne it would be ever so much more comfortable, but then it wouldn’t be half so interesting."
"I've just been imagining that it was really me you wanted after all and that I was to stay here for ever and ever. It was a great comfort while it lasted. But the worst of imagining things is that the time comes when you have to stop and that hurts."
"I'd go out into a great big field all alone or in the deep, deep woods and I'd look up into the sky—up—up—up—into that lovely blue sky that looks as if there was no end to its blueness."
"The world doesn’t seem such a howling wilderness as it did last night. I’m so glad it’s a sunshiny morning. But I like rainy mornings real well, too."
"The world looks like something God had just imagined for His own pleasure, doesn't it?"
"I can’t cheer up — I don’t want to cheer up. It’s nicer to be miserable!"
"It's been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will."
"One can't stay sad very long in such an interesting world, can one."

I’m loved now, but when I wasn’t, it didn’t mean I wasn’t worthy of it.

Marilla, there’s a Book of Revelations in everyone’s life. I’ve been so wrong… If Gil were to… not knowing how I really care. Oh, there there now.
She came out of her reverie with a deep sigh and looked at him with the dreamy gaze of a soul that had been wandering afar, star-led.

But Anne with her elbows on the window sill, her soft cheek laid against her clasped hands, and her eyes filled with visions, looked out unheedingly across city roof and spire to that glorious dome of sunset sky and wove her dreams of a possible future from the golden tissue of youth's own optimism. All the Beyond was hers, with its possibilities lurking rosily in the oncoming years — each year a rose of promise to be woven into an immortal chaplet.

here to say that i actually deeply respect how LM Montgomery wrote Gilbert's recovery from illness in Anne of the Island. it would have been so easy — and traditionally romantic — to have him realise that Anne wasn't engaged to Roy and magically take a turn for the better because hey! he's got a girl to catch! but that's not what happened. we're explicitly told he believes he has no chance with her until after he's on the mend, when Phil Gordon sends him a letter. yes, once he hears that he starts recovering at a frankly astounding rate, but him wanting to live? turning things around? he does that of his own accord. Montgomery doesn't attribute any of it to him pursuing Anne.
and really, how well Gilbert is written will always be one of my favourite things. despite appearing surprisingly rarely in the books, he's never treated solely as a love interest. from the moment we meet him, he's charting his own path just as much as Anne does. that's what makes us happy to accept him as an equal to Anne, whose story we all know and love, because we know he has his own — even if we only catch glimpses of it.
That way, past all fences. Go away from the ocean to the dead tree. Find the thin water that moves, travel upstream until all around you is green trees. Walk with the water the way the sun goes down, until the land grows flat and open. Our home is there.
