The Magnus Archives is like the polar opposite of the shows and stories that are meant to be lighthearted but if you do any amount of thinking about the implications of their worldbuilding it quickly becomes utterly horrifying.

A physical manifestation of fear let a guy live for like a solid week because he thought that hiding under a blanket would protect him and the fear entity decided to respect that as long as he was sufficiently worried about the situation. A group of things pretending to be human are forced to take an anatomy course, presumably because they were doing such a bad job at it.

Fayum Mummy Portraits, dating from around 30 BC to the mid 3rd century AD.

The portrait heads were attached to Egyptian mummies of the Roman period, covering the faces of the deceased In the top pictures, you can see now they were bound to the mummy. Dating from the time of the Roman occupation of Egypt, they are closest to Graeco-Roman artistic traditions. Around 900 are known to survive and they are some of the only surviving evidence of Classical panel painting traditions. Due to their burial in hot, dry conditions with the bodies, many have survived in excellent condition.

The term Fayum comes from an area of graveyards (necropoli) where they were found in large numbers, buried in communal catacombs.

Painted on wooden board (and sometimes on cloth), either in encaustic (wax) or egg tempera.

Top tip- when you’re looking at Fayum portraits, it’s generally immediately obvious whether they are painted in tempera or encaustic. The tempera portraits are more neat and precise, and generally the best ones are encaustic (although I feel the tempera really photographs a lot better- the encaustic ones look a bit messy in pictures but are stunning in real life). The encaustic portraits are far more powerful and lifelike, with a depth and transparency to the skin. I’ve never painted with encaustic before but I’m planning to learn this summer, largely because of these portraits!

So, I’m not clear on exactly what op meant, but the Fayum refers to an entire region of Egypt around Lake Moeris. There were many villages and cemeteries located in the Fayum, especially in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. These famous mummy portraits come from the Fayum region of Egypt. It’s not clear whether it was only a funerary practice in that region or whether it was practiced in other areas of Egypt and simply not preserved elsewhere. One theory I find compelling regarding them is that family portraits were made, and that when a family member died, their portrait was cut out and placed on their mummy. Nevertheless, thank you for a great post! They are simply stunning!

@manletjon and i have come up with a tma au where all of canon is just a really fucking long, intense, and semi-prophetic fever dream martin is having and waking up periodically from as a rotating cast of his friends take care of him. he keeps mumbling REALLY DISCONCERTING SHIT like

they all bully martin about this whole thing up until gerry is like haha. so . funny . funny story . guess who has a brain tumor. then theyre like uh. holy shit. then sasha’s identity gets stolen (the normal way) and theyre all like UHHHHH. then elias gets arrested for murdering gertrude (for threatening to expose peter lukas the real estate mogul & landlord for cutting corners dangerously on his apartment complexes) and everything goes fully off the fucking rails
