In December 2025 H&M had a children’s clothing recall when they forgot the flammability labels in the ponchos, dressing gowns and pjs. This recall was global. Forgetting these labels could’ve resulted in a law suit if a child attained serious burn injuries while wearing. The lesson they should’ve learnt from this situation is that health and safety tules are there for a reason and completely forgetting or even worse ignoring them could result in someone getting seriously injured or hurt. H&M can ensure that this never happens again by hiring a health and safety professional to make sure every single clothing piece has a safety label.
(Charlotte)
In 2006 Victoria secret sold a two piece kimono top with sheer fabric which caused it to fail the flammability tests. This was a serious Health risk and Victoria secret instructed customers to not wear the product and to contact them immediately. In 2021 Victoria received backlash for their negligence of plus sized swim suits and it didn’t meet customer needs and industry standards. In 2016 the different quality concerns and criticism officially caused Victoria to discontinue and remove their swimwear apparel.
This was A team task, we had to pick 3 categories to research and find out, what they do, examples and the fashion job roles that come with the category.
Laceys part :
Limited companies is a private company establishing as a limited company that offers liability protection. or produces limited edition clothing pieces.
brands use this because of the growth that comes with it, it helps them move past the sole trader status. it gives them creditability can appear much more professional and people are more likely to trust it. Fashion examples of limited companies range from global giants like Louis Vuitton, Dior and Kering to successful independent brands such as Fashion Nova and Spanx, often using "limited" in their name or strategy for exclusivity.
Creative bodies:
Creative bodies puts a emphasis on individuality, experimentation and creating conventual outfits and designs, From this they are able to transform basic pieces of cloth or clothing into something unique and brand new with meaning and soul behind it. Creative bodies puts a focus on individuality this is why they take your bone structure and body shape when picking out a your personality wardrobe.
Creative bodies use a mix of colours, patterns and textures making it conventual as they have mixed all different types of textiles.
They also mash many different styles together, creating a whole new style and making it unique to you as a individual.
Corporations
Fashion corporations are major global successes, they will design, manufacture and market and sell their clothing, shoes and accessories all across stores, making them readily available and easy to obtain. Big brands are able to scout out trends and traction which trickles down to the smaller corporations. This helps designers get job in the industry.
Retailers that fall under the corporation category are, LVMH, NIKE and H&M these are the most notable global fashion brands that sell clothing, accessories, shoes and more. apposed from these but are still corporations are Gucci and Dior while they are high quality they are still in the same category as they take influence or are able to influence runways..
Corporations provide jobs for everyone who wants to make it in the industry some of these roles are, fashion designer, merchanider (buyer), marketing and PR, retail management and finance.
Lanas part
Small and medium sized enterprises
They are businesses that create jobs, drive innovation and supply goods and services. They often specialise in niche markets or local needs acting as a backbone of economies by providing agility and significant employment whilst facing challenges like funding. They contribute to economic growth.
Examples:
Sustainable brands like Girlfriend collective(a startup known for its trendy and sustainable active wear)
Roles in Fashion:
They play a vital role in the fashion industry, acting as key drivers of innovation, sustainability and unique customer experiences.
Not for profits
What They Do:
They serve the community, public or social missions, not private profit, reinvesting surplus revenue to further their goals like education, health or environment. They can range from charities and foundations to social enterprises, club and housing associations, all operating with a focus on collective benefit rather than owner enrichment.
Examples: Companies like Fashion Revolution are not for profit organisations that advocate for ethical, sustainable and transparent practices.

Lydias part

Charities are organisations which promote sustainability, ethical practices and worker welfare. They educate others on the social and environmental issues in the fashion industry whilst also supporting workers, practicing sustainability through recycling and providing clothing for those in need. They globally reduce waste, which is a vast environmental issue which mostly is caused by the fashion industry.
Freelancers
A freelancer in the fashion industry is somebody who is self employed but on a contract basis, meaning they aren't a permanent employee. They are usually hired for having a strong skillset, particularly in design, pattern cutting or styling. Freelancers work independently, focusing on aspects like designing, sourcing fabric and samples, managing social media and consulting marketing strategies, styling, trend forecasting and production
Sole traders
Sole traders are self employed. They run businesses', handling the creative aspects or fashion as well as the business side. Sole traders tend to have the duties of design (sewing, pattern cutting), retail and sales (store management, running a boutique), styling, content creation (working with social media to promote products) and business operations like managing finances.
An merchandiser ensures every single bag and perfume is where they need to be at the specific times they either release at or promote. They will also make sure that there’s quality control making sure every single bag and perfume all going out has the same stitch, scent and details. no lose threads they also have to make sure to make the right quantity as if they make too much or too little the company could lose money. At Prada the average (more experienced) salary in the UK is £69k - £80k.
https://uk.indeed.com/career-advice/finding-a-job/merchandising-job-description
An accessory designer is crucial to the Business as they develops functional and working sketches and specs that other people can easily develop and change into a real thing. They would have to stay current on trends to make sure they aren’t creating a design nobody will buy. They will create prototypes of their idea and collaborate with a manufacturer to bring the designs from a concept to reality. The beginning pay for this job yearly would be £25,k-£30,k..
Prada would have a textile producer as they have a very wide product inventory all having fabric that is carefully picked out and handled with care before becoming the bag. They would have to create, develop and manage the production of these fabric from beginning to end making sure to do weather quality checks and making sure its sustainable, innovative and has good quality. The pay annually is £40k - £100k In the UK.
With Prada being such a big name in the industry I believe they would have several quality control managers making sure that product not made in the best possible quality is thrown away and not sold. They have to test the material and products at various stages, from just raw materials to the final product. They will also try to make the making process and simple and easy as possible by suggesting ways to make it cheaper and easier to make. At Prada they would make on average £25k-£34k a year in the UK.

METAVERSE
The metaverse was an idea originally proposed in a 1992 novel called “snow crash”. In the story it uses the word “metaverse” and talks about a world set in reality but they can dip into a virtual world. I think this is where Mark Zuckerberg got his inspiration, however, from constant exposure to this kind of world theres negative side effects like: VR sickness, addiction, social comparison, depersonalisation (detached from yourself), derealisation.
Virtual clothing is a very big part of the metaverse, from dressing up your avatar in game using bitcoin to using a photo of yourself to add 3D clothing the landscape is wide. Many influences tried out this app these are called: “safiya nygard and hopescope”. Both of these comment on the price and the scam of the project, and i agree however, I think the aspect that is most important is the fact that they arent real pieces so once you “wear” them they wont go into a landfill.

Cheetah Print research - Trickle Theory
Cheetah print first gained it’s recognition in the 1930’s with the movie “Tarzan the Apeman”, and Christian Dior saw this and decided to create his 1947 collection based on the the cheetah print trend, This at first made it Trickle down from the upper class to make it widely spread around the world, then slowly changed to trickle across where it has stayed since 2025. Glamour in Hollywood also played a huge part of the influence cheetah print held on everyone in the 1950’s, due to high ranking celebrities at the time wearing and show casing the gorgeous fabric, actors like: Marilyn Monroe and Ava Gardener. Cheetah came back once again in the 1960’s with a brand new image, now appealing to rock stars and rock bands. Seen as “rebellious and edgy”, at this time as well we can see it entering Caraby street, it’s starting to appeal to the masses. Celebrity influences in this era also further made the public want this animal print, celebrities like: Jackie Kennedy. Finally we have reached the mass market in the 2000s, from designers to fast fashion more animal prints became more popular and mainstream, animal prints like zebra, leopard and snake and this has continued till present day.
My Shop-look outfit was heavily inspired by the y2k and Hollywood influences on the print. Definitely appealing to GenZ. Personally i would wear this outfit if I had it.
Cultural Appropriation and Appreciation
I was told to create two posters on cultrual appreciation and cultural appropriation. Cultural appreciation is using a selective culture and learning, embracing it by engaging in the traditions, designers, media and religion of the whole country and understanding and celebrating every aspect examples include: “Rihanna at the Met-Gala 2015”, “Ralph Lauren challenging and breaking stereotypes” and “Dior Cruise 2020”.

https://youtu.be/vfAp_G735r0?si=ho4OqtUW_Zlo1eVa
However, on the flip side of that we have Cultural Appropriation which is where you wear significant pieces of religion or culture insensitively for example: wearing it for halloween costumes (Paris Hilton, Heidi Klum and Julianne Hough’s.), runway shows, stereotypes and using accents or the language to mock or poke fun for your own entertainment.
Fashion retailers - presentation ( chris , Alex , Lacey )
˖ ᡣ𐭩 ⊹ ࣪ ౨ৎ˚₊ Leia Lingerie
The final store we visited in York was “Leia Lingerie”. leia stands on the 5th place on the list of the best Bra brands, However, they don’t just sell bras they also sell: swimwear, lotions and coverups. The store as a whole has a very summery feel to it, only focusing on tanning, beaches and pools. Inside they have a very white interior but it works very well and creates the atmosphere and impression that Leia is a luxary brand. The prices stay consistent in the £38 - £50 range (this will be changed for any other type of item like the lotions, jewellery etc)
Leia is located in the Central York area and is surrounded by other big brand names like: zara and H&M basically securing its place as a major retailer.
Promotion wise they have a instagram Leia Lingerie (@leia_lingerie) • Instagram photos and videos, facebook Leia Lingerie | York | Facebook and a website https://leialingerie.com/ . These all look the same overall and keeping it consistent.
˖ ᡣ𐭩 ⊹ ࣪ ౨ৎ˚₊ Clarksons
Another of the York shops we went into was “Clarksons”, being established in 1949 Clarksons makes suits for higher class men. Everything associated with the store has a very formal and british heritage feel to it. sketches of the clothing include very traditional British animals these include: Badgers, ducks and rabbits. I consider Clarksons to be upper-high street considering its looking at the past and not using runways to inspire them. The prices of a blazer can range from £100 - £300.
Clarksons is located in the York central next to “St Micheal Le Belfray” (church) Clarksons has three other stores located in York.
Promotion wise Clarksons has a instagram Clarkson's Of York (@clarksons_ofyork) • Instagram photos and videos and a website Menswear | Clarksons Of York | York on these he promotes his new clothing coming into the store and tells us some history around the store and company. While the store uses very basic forms of promoting and marketing their products they also use word of mouth one of which is a rumour, rumours about the store being haunted cause mystery and intrigue a reader or a listener to visit and maybe buy a piece of clothing.

˖ ᡣ𐭩 ⊹ ࣪ ౨ৎ˚₊ Diltane Hatters
In York I visited three stores, one of these was Diltane Hatters. This shop specializes in selling hats and scarfs the style and shape these vary from: tops hats, traditional hats to fun halloween costumes and cowboy hats. This brand lies under the fashion bracket "High street", considering the hats they sell are affordable and trendy. The prices of the hats can range from £14.99 - £35.99 and the scarfs are £17 each.
Diltane Hatters is located where the jewellery store "Beaver brooks" once was and is in the central area of York "Spurriergate". They are fairly new only being opened in May 2025.
Promotion wise they hardly have any presence, especially online. They are pretty unknown and only using the store windows to promote their product, In the windows they use a wonderlandy type vibe in my opinion taking inspiration from the character, Mad Hatter.
Retail Report Presentation - Lana ,, Lacey ,, Ami
In this lesson we had to take a basic white and black t-shirt and create a new outfit with a specific customer in mind. My team picked “business attire”, in the moment I thought this was one of the hardest ones to do as we Had to use things we brought in from home and random items around the room, so while the outfits are quite plain i still think they work nicely.
