I think in casual context, the punchline of the Hollow Knight as a character is…

Like your first impression is this terrifying, mean-looking towering warrior, and then you find out they’re a nervous, polite, earnestly good-spirited sort of person who doesn’t want to make any trouble and their silence is involuntary and they are kind of sheepishly working on the ‘letting yourself have opinions on things’

but like if you just take it as a given that they’ll apologize and fold in all situations you are in for a really unpleasant awakening that the reason they are so sheltered and restrained and controlled is because they are a lab-grown demigod soldier built explicitly for killing god.

Although I guess this is sort of a quality all three of the ill-fated siblings in HK have, really, you have court-manners-and-pretty-pleated-cloak Hornet who definitely kills and eats wild animals for sustenance and can’t emotionally relate to anyone she hasn’t tried to murder at least once, and then there’s Ghost who has the appearance of a child, the mien of a Principled Ronin from a samurai movie, and the unapologetic and unhesitating willingness to respond to being ripped off by hunting the person down and physically beating them until they stop dropping money.

They are all this way for genuinely tragic and heartbreaking reasons but it’s also really, really funny.

#it is absolutely fascinating how all the Knight and hollow knight are regarded as empty vessels in lore#but fanon managed to make such interesting takes on the characters that argue otherwise 

I mean this is because the only people who say “these babies are empty, yeet” are the most unreliable narrators in the game, haha. The White Lady and Pale King are in fact the least accurate judges of whether something has emotions or not as it turns out!

Everything else in the game including what the Knight is capable of doing and what is implied by description and reaction to the player character basically hands you a shit ton of contextual evidence that vessels are just people like everyone else. I’m not certain it’s really fanon if it’s mostly drawing from…stuff that is in the game

The Hollow Knight is more difficult I’ll grant you since we have very little on them apart from implications, but I think it’s pretty blatant that you are meant to see the Knight as a person and not define them by their parents’ inaccurate descriptions of them.
