ok, bare with me on this cuz i'm actually thinking for once
whether you love it or you hate it, it's generally agreed upon that Pahkitew Island has a very one-dimensional cast. in my personal opinion, this hurts a significant majority of the roster (any fan of the twins can attest to this), however, I think the character worst affected by the general shallowness of Gen 3, besides them, is Sugar.
Now, contestants based on specific pop culture references are nothing new, just look at Harold. These kinds of contestants became more prevalent as the original show went on, likely because it was easier to make characters with that philosophy in mind (Jo, Dawn, B, Ella, Max, and Shawn all come to mind)
It's not limited to fictional characters either. Real people were also used as inspiration for characters. Anne Maria in particular is based on a reality TV show personality, that being Snooki of Jersey Shore fame
Sugar is also based on a reality TV personality, but there's a difference between her and Anne Maria.
See, Anne Maria is based on an adult, someone who has the capacity to be a willing participant. Sugar, conversely, is based on a child. Specifically, Alana Thompson, better known at the time of this season's production and release as Honey Boo Boo
Honey Boo Boo was the face of a show called Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, a spin-off of a show called Toddlers and Tiaras, of which she was a contestant on.
Toddlers and Tiaras is focused around child beauty pageants. I don't think I need to explain why the concept of a child beauty pageant is rather Epstein-adjacent, as I find it to be rather self evident as to why.
I think it's a safe assumption to assume that since Sugar is based on this individual, her background likely also has a lot of the same baggage. What does Pahkitew Island do with this presumably relevant information?
Well, as I've mentioned before, Total Drama as a show is pretty inconsistent as a satirical piece. Sometimes they hit the nail on the head, other times they completely play into reality TV tropes completely straight without anything to say. This is how we get things like the World Tour love triangle and the various poorly aged aspects of Leshawna.
Sugar in particular is a victim of this. Outside of her one-sided rivalry with Ella, which ends kind of abruptly in a dumb elimination, the show does basically nothing with her outside of doubling down on her being a "stupid fat hillbilly," and considering she's based on a child who was likely being exploited in some capacity during the show's run, it comes off as horrifically mean-spirited even by TD standards
Now, being a Cartoon Network, I'm not them to explicitly go into detail about her tragic backstory, but I would have appreciated if she was treated with some level of humanity the same way Mike was in Revenge of the Island, especially with how the likes of Adventure Time and Regular Show were already making their cultural impact by the time Pahkitew hit the airwaves
I guess what I'm trying to say is that she's the perfect microcosm of why the Pahkitew cast should have actually communicated with one-another as opposed to most of them being silo'd off into their own little groups with very little to actually do. The Ella beef is nice, but it just wasn't enough, ya know?
When you think about it tho actually most of Pahkitew characters are Potential Tragic Backstory People
like what do you mean Leonard canonically used to be a victim of bullying?
what do you mean Max doesnt go outside a lot and doesnt meet people that much?
what do you mean Scarlett always keeps an evil side of her...what led her to become like that?
what do you mean Dave is so germaphobic that he almost runs into a panic attack?
what do you mean Sky had an ex boyfriend that she had to dump (which I assume not for a good reason)?
and what do you mean Shawn is just anxious and paranoid and insomniac
the Potential Tragic Backstories™️ are endless
no no, you're absolutely right. there's so much with this entire cast I wish they actually bothered exploring in some way
honestly there's enough for all of them for like 2 seasons of material at least and even that feels restrained
