WOW
Sinking City Pop Fest was a huge success! All the bands ruled, a ton of people turned out, and we raised over $1,600 for the Rural Organizing Project. We had such a good time that we’re bringing it back in 2019! Stay tuned!
If you missed out, you can still stream the SCPF compilation on our bandcamp!
Sinking City Pop Fest guide, 2018
The Sinking City Pop Fest compilation is now streaming on bandcamp! You can pick up a physical copy at Happy Trails Records starting tomorrow, May 7, or buy one from the fest merch table this weekend. The CD costs $5 and features tracks from almost all of the bands playing the fest!
We’re throwing a fest! Sinking City Pop Fest is happening here in Corvallis, Oregon from May 11-13, 2018. We’re still very much in the planning stages, but it’s going to be a stacked weekend of all-ages DIY punk shows and events around Corvallis to celebrate our awesome community. There will be a ton of updates on this project in the next few months, so check back here or join our fb group to stay in the loop.
One of the ways folks can contribute to the fest right now is by making a donation through our bandcamp. We have two compilation albums of local punk, indie, emo, and garage bands available for download, and any donations will go into the fest fund and help us guarantee gas money to bands traveling to Corvallis. There will be lots of other opportunities to get involved in a more hands-on way in the future, but for now we are especially grateful for any financial support.
If you’ve never been to a Corvallis DIY show, you can check out some videos of recent shows on our vimeo page. In addition to a bunch of songs from cool touring bands like Big Eyes, Real Life Buildings, and Dogbreth, there’s also several videos of adventurous locals playing the first Band in a Hat showcase (third annual event kicks off in February btw, stay tuned for sign-up info!).
Quick summary again: People who want to start bands -- whether they’ve been in ten bands or have never played an instrument before -- submit their names. We mix them up into groups of 3-5 people. You take some time to meet up and start your band. At the end, we have a big show and all the new bands play! The first Band in a Hat showcase was probably one of the best shows we threw in 2016, and there are videos of some of the bands on the Corvallis DIY Vimeo page if you want to see what you’re getting into.
The band lineups will be announced at 6:00 on SUNDAY, JANUARY 15 during our January group meetup at Interzone. YOU MUST SHOW UP TO THE BAND ANNOUNCEMENTS TO PARTICIPATE. The final show will take place on SATURDAY, MARCH 4, probably around 7:00. That gives you seven weeks to practice and write/learn some songs! Set lengths can be anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes.
If you’d like to participate, please submit the following information. First three questions are required, fourth is optional. You can either comment directly on the sign-up post in the Corvallis DIY fb group or send an email to [email protected].
1) NAME 2) EXPERIENCE LEVEL – choose what best describes you: -- little/no experience (you’re new to playing music!) -- some experience (you might know how to play an instrument or two, but you haven’t really played in bands before) -- lots of experience (you’ve been in bands, played shows, feel pretty confident about playing at least one instrument) 3) INSTRUMENTS/PRACTICE SPACE – Do you own/have access to any instruments that either you or your new bandmates could play? If so, which ones? Do you have a place where your band could practice? 4) (Optional) Is there anything extra you need us to take into account? Maybe you want to make sure you don’t end up with someone you’re already in a band with, etc. We’d like to keep this as random as possible, but if there’s something that’d make the experience much better for you, let us know.
Then just show up at 6:00 on January 15 to meet your new bandmates! After that, we’ll add you to a separate FB group created for participants to talk about their bands and support each other by sharing ideas and resources.
This is a really cool opportunity to make new friends and to try something new! Tell your friends!
14 track album
Vol. II of the Corvallis DIY comp is here! Featuring 14 tracks from some currently active local DIY punk(-ish) bands and rad cover art by Daniel Watkins. Check it out on bandcamp or come to shows to grab a copy!
TONIGHT!! YAAAAAAY
Photos from some cool shows that happened in the past few months! First photo by Lydia Graber, the rest by Indiana.
So much stuff coming up starting next week! Take Up Space is the big event to make it to, but you don’t wanna miss all these rad shows leading up to it either! Screen printed Take Up Space posters will be available for sale at the event (to help us pay for renting the space). As always, all the shows are all-ages and cheap!
Corvallis DIY punk convention expo thing, y’all! Submit yr stuff, participate in yr community. There will be local record labels, zines, books, posters, KBVR, and much more. It’s up to you! This event will also have something to do with BAND IN A HAT.
March 1 at Interzone! Wet The Rope are a hardcore band from Sacramento made up of people who were in a bunch of great 80s-90s emo/post-hardcore bands (Amber Inn, Sinker, Pitchfork, etc.). Very cool that they are coming through Corvallis. Also featuring locals Ghost Fuzz (post-punk) and Snake Eyes (weirdo math punk). First show of what’s gonna be a very busy month.
Some okay pictures from some great shows in the past few weeks.
The collaborative effort between local musicians and their followers is essential in creating a repertoire of live music in town.
Cool write-up in the Daily Barometer of the show at Interzone the other night! “‘I like how personal the setting is. I love that after their performance, you can just go up to the band and talk to them, it’s very cool,’ said Lucas Paris. . . .”
Indie/emo night at Interzone next week! Byrgeau Noil are on tour from Denver, joined by locals Steve Hunter (of That Coyote) and Mons La Hire (a new band, playing their second or third show)! All ages, as always.
