Nikki Giovanni, The Collected Poetry, 1968-1998
soulmate
weβve barely known each other
but your hands are already holding a fragment of my heart
a soulmate Iβve never came across
your gentle words and all this energy you emit
every emotion rushing in
like typhoons and tornadoes
water crashing on the walls of my heart
i have never felt so vulnerable and weak
your smiles Iβve only seen in pictures and your glow Iβve wasted seconds staring at
who knew that one soul could be made of the same star as me
each fiber of the same rock flowing as glitter in our blood
heartfelt connection
could this be another unhealthy obsession?
the thoughts are barging through the gates of my mind, uninvited
yet you entered my heart so effortlessly
like a cold breeze expected on winter
defrosting my numbness to the world
to people
to emotions
to myself
how can it be so easy for someone to pierce through my thick skin into my bones
I feel the sting of your tongue spear as you mouth words youβve written down with your fingertips and I can only imagine how your touch would make my bodyβs nature tremble
a divinity fated to awaken me
I question myself
and my unreliable thoughts
how can someone made up of a life entirely different
be so familiar
maybe weβve met lifetimes ago
and youβre a reincarnate destined to cross my path and vice versa
and I helplessly give in
to the unknown; you
