Despite the weather forecaster’s earlier predictions, the rain pounding against the windows of Tom’s home only seemed to be picking up in intensity.
‘The first shower of the season,’ the forecaster had said, as he’d described the mild rain that would hit in the evening and dissipate by morning like a nightmare come and gone. Yet as the lightning flashes across the night sky, casting long shadows through the parlor of his home, Tom knows somewhere deep in his bones that this winter is going to be a long and brutal one.
“Last time I trust that stupid weatherman,” Pete— no, Maverick (call me Maverick, Mav for short, everyone else does)— mutters, echoing Tom’s own thoughts.
Turning back to look at his guest, Tom can’t help but hum his agreement, watching as Maverick huddles up against the fire, desperately trying to warm himself up.
“They do say hindsight is always 20/20,” Tom allows magnanimously, flashing Maverick a grin before throwing in another log into the fireplace. “At least now you know wading through a storm is never a good idea.”
“It was a good idea at the time,” Mav shoots back, even as he clutches the blanket around his shoulders more firmly.
“Oh yes, I forgot you were the epitome of good sense,” Tom says, poking around at the logs to make sure there was enough air flow. “Now you're trapped here until this storm passes and, I hate to break it to you, but it looks like we’re in for the long haul.”
Because Tom wouldn’t risk sending him out, not with the way the wind was howling– the sound traveling through the empty hallways of his home making it seem as if they were in the very heart of the storm.
No, this was one battle Tom refused to lose and from the way Mav was sniffling, Tom knows he won’t bother bringing it up again.

“What are you?,” Goose demands, waiting until Carole clears the room before finally rounding on Ron. Who, of course, doesn’t even have the decency to look the slightest bit ruffled as Goose stalks towards him. No, instead Ron looks perfectly at ease - standing before the window, watching as the flurries madly sweep by.
Asshole.
“What do you mean?,” he asks and already Ron sounds so bored with the conversation, barely acknowledging Goose’s presence with the slightest tilt of his head. But that’s how it had always been with Ron - from the moment he and Maverick had first met him. There was this irreverence to him that had always grated at his nerves. As if he were skating a thin line between politeness and open mockery.
Carole had always laughed with a little shake of her head whenever he’d complained about Tom’s associate, amusement clear in her eyes as she blamed his southern sensibilities for his irritation but he knew a diversion tactic when he saw one. Especially one launched by his lovely wife.
“What do I mean?,” he echoes, grabbing Ron by the arm and whirling him around, forcing him to meet his gaze head on. “Are you… are you kidding me right now? All of this!,” and Goose throws his arms out, as if that was enough to encompass everything that had happened in the last twenty-four hours. As if it was enough to encompass the fear clawing at his throat at the sight of Mav laying bloodless and prone on the bed while Tom was simply gone.
“What answer could you possibly have to explain any of this?,” he demands, practically yelling as the frustration rises like bile in the back of his throat. All around him the chattering grows louder, the words forming an unknown melody that tears at his patience, making his head pound.
“Just –,” and Goose wants to scream, he wants to grab Ron by the shoulders and shake the answers out of him; anything to get him to react.

“You know, Goose is right,” Pete said, apropos of nothing as he passed Carole the flour without prompting. Because Pete Mitchell was many things as Carole had had the pleasure of both knowing and learning over the years, but he was an especially amazing baking assistant.
“He usually is,” she conceded, throwing Pete a smile over her shoulder before evenly dusting her countertop with flour. “But what’s got you coming to that obvious conclusion?,” she asked, the ‘finally’ left unsaid even if it was clear by the amusement in her voice and the quirk of Pete’s own lips.
“You’re enchanting,” and the way he so carelessly shrugged as he said it, leaning back against the kitchen sink with his hands deep in his pockets, the picture perfect image of ease had Carole forgetting all about her dough as she whirled around to face him.
“Why, Pete Mitchell, do I need to remind you that I am a happily married woman?,” she asked, adopting her most scandalized tone imaginable as she grabbed her rolling pin and pointed it straight at Mav. “Because I will happily beat you back with this rolling pin and then I’ll have to make poor Goose help me hide your body and what then, huh? What then?”
And as much as she wanted to, Carole couldn’t keep up her little act for long - not as the silence stretched between them and she watched as Pete barely held back his own laughter, his adorably ridiculous crooked teeth now on full display belying the faux innocence shining in his eyes.
“Ohhh,” she exclaimed, sounding far less irritated than she meant to and that was enough for the dam to break as they both broke down into giggles, their laughter only growing with each whack of her pin against of his shoulder - tiny puffs of flour adorning them both.
Goose might’ve been the other part of her heart, the part that contained all her happiness and all her hope, but Pete was the other half of her soul. ‘Two peas in a pod,’ is what Goose loved to say whenever he caught them pressed shoulder to shoulder, laughing in the way only they could because they understood each other in a way only they could.
“So you’re finally seeing my worth, huh, Pete,” she teased, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand, uncaring of the flour she was smearing across her cheek.
Added on HC: when Slider gets drunk he wanders (VERY FAR), normally he has someone with him to make sure he doesn’t but on occasions when they lose the tall guy Ice has to put up with going on scavenger hunts to find him 💀 it gives Ice a headache in the morning but nothing a lil Mav magic cant fix ✨ (or break??? lol)
Everyone like to talk about Mav is the better pilot because he has more confirmed air to air kill than Ice but they forgot that Ice and Slider managed to still flying for 3 minutes alone, while being chased by 6 migs. That skill is why he is the TOPGUN winner and why he is the better pilot.
