i need frye twins fics where as much as they care about one another they don't actually like each other. the competition their father and the whole brotherhood as well put on them just made it impossible for them to actually like each other.

Like of course they still care for and love one another, they do not like the other. that is important to me. Maybe post jtr they can actually foster a liking of each other but literally the only reason they work together in syndicate is because they have to. that is the only reason. they can banter but they do. not. like. each. other.

I understand where your interpretation is coming from, especially through the of forced sibling competition, since I’ve experienced that dynamic myself.

But when parents pit siblings against each other, resentment is inevitable. If Jacob and Evie were pushed to compete from an early age, it’s realistic that they would initially resent one another while both sought Ethan Frye’s approval. However, that resentment wouldn’t remain mutual or balanced.

At some point, Jacob would have recognized that he would never be the favoured or “better” twin in Ethan’s eyes. Evie, as the more naturally disciplined and academically inclined twin, fit Ethan’s expectations more closely. Once Jacob accepted that reality, he would have stopped competing altogether. Rather than continuing to fight a losing battle, he would disengage which is characterised towards his avoidant nature.

disengagements is key which me thinks leads to the result in their distance far more than Ethan’s statement ever did.

Evie became the golden child, the one who embodied their father’s ideals and methods, while Jacob grew resentful not just of Ethan’s cold teachings, but of what Evie represented. His frustration wasn’t born from rivalry alone, but from watching his sister succeed within a system that consistently failed him. Even IF Evie never intended to replace or surpass him (or maybe she did, lmao) she inevitably became the standard he could not meet.

(rambling) Jacob’s resentment, therefore, wasn’t truly directed at Evie as a person, but at the structure she symbolised. Still, that resentment would naturally bleed into their relationship. Evie, meanwhile, would pull further toward discipline and responsibility, reinforcing the divide. She, in return, could begin to resent Jacob for not partaking in their father’s training seriously because it would’ve left her feeling alone under the weight of Ethan’s training.

Because of this, I don’t think Ethan’s line “Do not let your personal feelings compromise the mission,” had a significant influence on how the twins were raised. Their fractured dynamic can be more convincingly explained by a bunch of factors (favouritism, unequal validation etc etc)

BASICALLY, in my opinion of the reason IF Jacob and Evie hated each other, I would see that their distance wasn’t the result of being forbidden from caring about each other. It was the natural outcome of being raised under unequal expectations, where one child was rewarded for compliance and the other punished for divergence. To me, the Frye twins conflict stems less from ideological conditioning and more from parental favouritism and character incompatibility (due to them being opposites) with Jacob eventually opting out of a competition he could never win.

i kinda see where you're coming from with your interpretation but the issue is this isn't an 'IF' in relation to these two and this idea- like corvus's point is literally how it's shown in canon! evie doesn't RESENT jacob per se, but she sure as hell spends most of the main game picking apart his every move, and criticising everything he does, and everything he says, and everything she ASSUMES he thinks, until he reaches his breaking point and that's when the argument on the train happens. she may not unequivocally hate her brother, but she sure as hell doesn't see him as an equal to her. and she definitely, ahem, is not nice about that to him!

and she doesn't do this because he didn't listen to ethan or take his lessons of the assassin way seriously, or because he left her alone to deal with the man's bullshit parenting training, but because their father managed to instill in her an inflated ego and a pretty hefty superiority complex, at the expense of her brother's uhm. positive view of himself as a person and overall mental health for the rest of his life ! but anyway, evie sees herself as better skilled than jacob, because ethan told her and everyone around her she was; she sees herself as smarter just because she values the pieces of eden and assassin history more than him, and more respectable, because he tends to associate himself with the 'lower classes' beyond simply taking pity on them and their struggles in the ways she and her father did.

like when they were kids were they close? yes. but i think it's important that ethan's upbringing started hammering in this wedge between them while his death is what broke them apart in the end. if you ask me, jacob probably believed evie was simply playing along and doing what ethan expected because he was alive still™ and there was more pressure to conform. jacob ignored that pressure after a certain point of course but evie kept going, and when ethan died jacob thought she would be free to be as he is in terms of no longer having to hold themselves to Ethan's standards. but she doesn't. because she wasn't doing it because she FELT like she had to, she genuinely believed and fully absorbed his teachings. it's what the 'father is dead' line is about- it's Jacob saying 'the man isn't here now, you don't need to pretend to actually believe what he was saying anymore!'.

the twins relationship goes beyond your average sibling banter because again, they were trained in direct competition with eachother to be built into the perfect assassins for ethan frye. and i absolutely also believe that the 'not allowing personal feelings to compromise the mission' point is one of the BIGGEST drivers of separation and resentment between the two. it's importance is emphasised in the game, the books, and by the writers in multiple different interviews! jacob's entire story is about rebelling against it: making friends, falling in love, allowing his care for the people of london to come before his mission of securing the piece of eden. evie's ALSO centres around it, what with the entire story with jayadeep and it leading her to discover that shock horror! their abusive and absent father did infact suck just maybe a little bit at least a tiny bit at least in that area for sure probably🫶

ironically jacob's dalliances almost serve to prove his father right in a way (although my jacob and ethan analysis would be so long i gotta save that for a different rant), as they do bring him a whole lot of issues- but the point still stands that jacob ignored that advice from the beginning. he rebelled against it, upset evie, angered evie, had evie writing and yelling to him about it in a. pretty dismissive and mean way actually. you can 100% argue the idea that evie's internalisation of the mantra and idea that jacob should do the same is exactly why she's so dismissive of any time he shows any emotion towards his assassinations beyond pride. she brushes off his 'strangeness' after his killing of pearl and. i mean we all saw how jacob was after killing roth. i think evie's instant barrage at him after her brother essentially told her he was giving up (VERY odd for him) says a lot about how she views her brother's feelings towards things!

of course by the end, she does understand finally that ethan wasn't right. the realisation definitely serves to improve their relationship a little bit, but if you ask me absolutely not enough to fix it entirely. jacob still resents her for not realising sooner, and for upholding it in the way she did too. it's too little too late, and i think at that point they understand that they've both built up these worldviews that do not match the others', and it's still better off if they don't work together again. because they don't. after the events of syndicate they never fully work together again, in any book comic or game set after 1868. there's the brief victoria missions, and after evie moves they train together in india for a little bit, but the India training thing is a WHOLE other topic on the twins' development that i do NOT have the time to go into right now- but at the end of the day it arguably serves to separate them even more.

i mean there's actually a whole lot i haven't touched on- main thing being the actual fact that beyond their actual characterisations as people, the twins are there to represent both the class divide in england and a large ideological wedge that lives within the assassins. like the twins and their whole representation of just pure assassin infighting and english class issues is so #flames and i NEED to talk about it more but ahem i don't really want to oversaturate this anymore than it already is😭 and i mean there's even MORE about the twins and how they actually BOTH fail to meet Ethan's standards but RAUGGHHHHHHHHH i need a whole other post just for that point. just know ethan frye it's on SIGHT and you NEED to learn to actually treat your OWN children as children instead of weapons and uhm. idk become a better parent in general. and person. i have so much more to say about that man it's insane. and the twins. ithunk about them far too much but anyway HOORAY thankyou for reading🫶

do you guys remember that assassin's creed syndicate poem i wrote about Jacob's complicated relationship with his father and (by extension) the assassins? no? it's because i wrote it for day 4 of codextober last year and never posted it. just got reminded of it due to renewed jacob thoughts™ and fuck it. fuck it you guys can have it....

The red bleeds between lithe fingers

soft and silken, held tight in a strong fist

as it flows, round and down and up and over,

a cascading river of scarlet satins,

choking and constricting,

pulling and tugging.

Trained hands begin to shake,

as life and death seep into one and

the sash pulls taught for a moment, laid out

almost as it was over that blank face

which now flashes and flickers, embedded,

staining the fibres with it's flat and peaceful stare.

It's a custom, to shroud one in death as in life.

To shroud a life in death too,

but as the face diffuses back into a trembling grasp,

and it's haunting screeches echo through the mind

the red river falls and unravels,

gushing and dispersing into the wood below.

This is wrong.

a deep breath is stolen from the still air,

and the pool on the floor is stepped over

That does not stop the trembling hands however,
