FEATURED ARTIST: Inna Babaeva
Inna Babaeva creates surreal sculptures that engage themes of mass production and commercial uniformity by approaching everyday objects with playful absurdity. She uses familiar items that are widely available for purchase and consumption and alters them by the addition of colorful oozing foam masses with a mind of their own. These alterations undermine the objects’ intended functions, producing alien, provocative characters. In a recent act of guerrilla art, she installed some of transformed IKEA items back into the store during opening hours and documented the results.
Inna Babaeva (born Lvov, Ukraine) lives and works in Long Island City, New York. She holds an MFA from Rutgers University. Her work has been recently exhibited at Anna Kustera Gallery, New York; Brian Morris Gallery; New York and Underdonk; New York. Babaeva is a recipient of the Sharpe-Walentas Foundation fellowship and she is a Rema Hort Mann Foundation 2014 Grant nominee.

Join us TONIGHT at IMAGE Gallery in Bushwick, for the closing of At The Bottom Of The Well, an exhibition of new works by Brooklyn-based Max "Elbows" Schieble. This is the artist’s first solo show with IMAGE Gallery, 1501 Broadway Brooklyn, NY, and is on view from January 8 - February 5*, 2016.
"At The Bottom Of The Well," the debut solo exhibit from Elbows AKA Max Schieble, explores an unseen world both playful and dark, through original visual and audio works. Elbows' visual works span across drawings, paintings, and prints. His witty aesthetic combines vibrant oafs, legged-furniture, and polka dotted-limbs, with themes of isolation, uncertainty, and identity. Influenced by cubism, surrealism, and cartoons, Elbows' figures found on canvases and prints are multi-faced, and disjointed, contorting and unraveling to reveal lots of colorful layers. His drawings settle on a simpler palette of black and white, occasionally with a hint of color, depicting scenes both comedic and introspective. Working across multiple mediums, Elbows aims to create a more encompassing experience for the viewer. As a songwriter and producer, Elbows' style is rooted in jazz and hip hop. At The Bottom Of The Well includes a soundtrack composition, incorporating programmed drums, live instrumentation, and vocal samples lifted from classic songs and films. Additionally, ATBOTW will feature a curated playlist of songs that inspired the imagery of the show.

For nearly fifty years, the voice of Pulitzer Prize-winning author and oral historian Louis “Studs” Terkel crackled over the airwaves from Chicago’s WFMT radio station as he interviewed the likes of Janis Joplin, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Oliver Sacks, Martin Luther King, Jr.,and Carl Sagan. To keep his legacy alive, the Studs Terkel Radio Archive is working to make these interviews available online for free.
Over two years, the archivists hope to make available an additional thousand recordings, to be used in classrooms and libraries, mined by researchers and journalists, remixed into new pieces, and enjoyed by old and new fans of the forefather of podcasting and radio storytelling.
“Studs spoke honestly, listened respectfully, and responded without judgment. In his words, we hear his commitment to equality, human rights, and education. Through his guests, we learn about art and music, science and philosophy, feminism and civil rights, and the great varieties of human experience. These conversations are as relevant today as they were fifty years ago, as we continue to explore what it means to be a good American and a good person.”
