Working with Plaster Paper

 Toughlittlelady sent in a awesome submission just in time for Tip Tuesday. She’s wants to share her experience using plaster cloth/paper.

“Okay, time for a cosplay rant.

I feel like every single person who makes oddly shaped things for fun or for a living needs to know about pre-done plaster strips. You can find them at Michaels for, according to my mom, for five bucks.

This is the third time I’ve tried to construct this freaking helmet and this is the FIRST time I’ve found something that works. What you do is you carve or cut whatever you want out of foam or cardboard or something cheap and flimsy first and then you get a package of these strips. They come in a big roll like gauze. You wet them in water, spread out all the stuff on it with your hands and put it on your form. They dry super fast and give you a nice, hard surface. If your prop isn’t sturdy enough, they’re cheap enough to put on another layer or two. Best of all, they go on super smooth. Both horns pictured were cut from a floral foam wreath but the one on the left has a single layer of strips while the one on the right has over ten layers of gesso and modge-podge on it. Gesso is super expensive—-bought mine for seventeen dollars and its nearly half gone—-and so is modge-podge. You can still see the bumps and holes on the one on the right while the one on the left just needs a coat of primer and its ready to paint. I’m going to probably cover my actual headpiece in strips because its made out of craft foam and needs the stability, but guys: THIS STUFF WORKS. IT IS INEXPENSIVE AND PAINTABLE AND A MIRACLE. I CAN’T STRESS THIS ENOUGH.”

Cosplaying on a Budget: I love that stuff! I’ve used it a bunch in my own projects. It’s even safe to use on your skin, unlike regular plaster.  I made a full cast of my own head as a prop using this stuff ( if you try this be sure to cover your hair with saran-wrap and coat your face in Vaseline). I used a combination papermache and fimo clay over the top to give it a smooth  finish.

The woman in the bathroom is trans and is scared that if she comes out of the stall the women that walked in will insult or harass her. but when she comes out they compliment her on her dress instead. The add ends with saying “stress tested for women.” It means Secret is including trans women in their definition of women.

My little sister’s going into middle school, and has an August birthday so I made this for her present! Watched all the episodes of Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide and put all the tips inside. Can’t wait to show her!
