Her father was out. The kettle was on. She had made a pie of some kind — rhubarb, perhaps — and left it cooling in the open window. Eva's pretty eyes admired the flowering vine creeping over her hand as she thought about it all. God, when was she going to wake up from this dream ? who said she could be happy ? she, once the good - intentioned headache of every government known to man ? the freak ?
Eva looked up when his shadow crossed over her, still kneeling in her garden ( an almost silly word when it contained more plants and life than most conservatories ). A breeze tossed her red hair, red like the blooms opening along her arm.

Scott's lips pulled into a smile as soon as he caught sight of her. The insistent throb in his head was, briefly, joined by a more gentle throb of his heart.
He didn't say anything at first, content with just looking. The potted hibiscus he'd brought with him (a mutated version with blue and yellow polka-dots, allegedly) was a souvenir from Scott's recent trip to the mutant nation of Genosha. Between having to speak with Magneto and discussing the politics that came with a nation representing their kind, Scott was exhausted. The only bright star in that whole excursion had been the plant he'd found for her.
Eventually, he approached, and the look Eva gave him made the back of his neck warm in a mix of embarrassment and delight.
"Looks like someone's having a good day," he said, crouching to meet Eva's height. Scott kissed her soft, even if on the withdrawal his teeth scraped her lip.
The tips of their noses brushed. "I drove up here as soon as the Blackbird landed. Don't ask me what time it is.
