I kind of understand why Noah didn’t want to ship Carter and Lucy. I mean Lucy was his student and you can’t blame him for being uncomfortable with the idea of them together. Sure was he harsh? yeah but in the long run I don’t see them being end game anyway. She honestly acted like an annoying little sister who thought she knew everything. Sorry but Noah wasn’t wrong in his opinions about that. RIP Lucy but Carter deserves better

sure, i guess it’s just hard for me to separate noah’s argument against the relationship from his hostility towards kellie, considering he had no issue with carter dating a teenager a couple seasons later.

carter was also more than just harsh to lucy… yeah she could be naive and overzealous, but he was petty and hypercritical, so much so that she never felt like she belonged at county. his behaviour towards her was totally inappropriate and his constant dismissal of her did end up getting her killed, so if anyone “deserved better” i think it would be her

It's deserted, the 6:00 am surgical support staff is just beginning to drift in as it's getting light. Carter waits, watching the doors at the far end of the hall. He leans back, closes his eyes. A beat. Lucy comes out of the locker room, starts down the hall, sees him waiting. Is surprised. Smiles.

wait I’m sorry I’m still new to ER lore what do yo my mean Noah Wyle took the Carter Lucy sex scene from us?? Why did he say no?

ohh i hate to be the one to tell you this …

to make a long story short: noah claims he had ethical concerns about the relationship. so when he read the script for 5x14, he wrote a letter to john wells pleading for the sex scene to be cut out. they negotiated down to a kiss, which kellie martin described as “very uncomfortable” because he straight up refused to kiss her back when filming. they talk about it in this interview.

but let me also say that mr. wyle was notoriously hard on newcomers to the show, he talks about it in this interview from 2019 saying: “I was hard on people that were coming into the show, like Erik Palladino or Michael Michele. Everybody had to earn their keep, in my opinion, especially poor Kellie Martin. I owe her a big apology.” and in this video talks a little more about specifically regretting his behaviour towards kellie.

unfortunately, lucy was brought in primarily as a love interest for carter, so after noah shut it down they agreed her character wasn’t really going anywhere and thus 6x13 “be still my heart” was born.

obviously noah has since apologised and there doesn’t seem to be (much) bad blood between them. but it does haunt me to think about what could’ve been ... my thoughts on the matter would be a different post entirely though
