i did a terrible thing // the paper chase

godshadowed:
The shadows knew. The shadows saw all.Â
The shadows would reward this.
For once, Kayn existed within Noxian borders not to kill. Well, he considered it–thought about killing at every occupied corner. Quick little kills, like squashing bugs, leaving but a smear of gore in his wake. He wanted to, but he controlled himself.
( No, that’s a lie. He let his control slip once, just for a man he caught among children. The strike he gave across a boy’s face resulted in a clean slice along his neck. Kayn may or may not have hid his head in a distant trash can. Had the man any family, they didn’t deserve to find his body intact, anyway. )
A more important kill was on his mind now, and he looked down upon the man who performed it.Â
“Talon.”
The shadow assassin stood at the top of the roof that Talon hauled himself onto. The wind caught his hair easily at this height, carrying it to twist and wisp behind him with the shadows laced through it. Like a war standard held ominously behind enemy lines.Â
“Looking for a place to lay low?”
The shock of suddenly seeing Kayn stand before him in the moonlight nearly sent poor Talon stumbling backwards off the roof ass over teakettle. Righting himself didn’t help much in regards to his thought process, though. His mind is still a flurry of firing synapses, a nearly unintelligible mishmash of fight or flight responses all screaming RUN. Â
Kayn’s placid calmness is a stark contrast to Talon’s wide-eyed panic. Trying to gather his thoughts before he spoke was a harder challenge than he had anticipated.Â
“Leave,” he chokes out. “I have to. They’ll... die. I’ll die.” He feels dazed, spinning, like everything is too far away. Kayn is standing right in front of him and yet he feels like the space between them is infinite. Talon sucks in the cold Noxus air. It occurs to him that this is the last time he’ll be able to. The pieces of him still barely stitched together, but he manages to put together a complete sentence, robotic as it may be.Â
“The Guard is after me.” He looks out over the rooftops. He can’t hear them yet, but he knows they’re coming. “Katarina... she knows. She saw. My head will be theirs if I don’t leave. I need to leave.”

He runs. He runs until his legs go numb and his lungs turn to fire behind his ribs, and then he runs some more. Leaping over rooftops and scaling walls three times his height-- the thieve’s highway, they called it when they were kids. From thieve’s highway to high treason escape route. It’s funny how things change, when kids grow up, when people die. When the man who helped you grow up dies by your own hands, weak and spitting up blood and crying.Â
Talon chokes on the cold night air, spiraling him into a coughing fit, forcing him to take refuge in a back-alley behind some butcher’s shop. The coughing turns to retching, and he dry heaves into some rotten meat; a smell that shouldn’t bother him, but does. Rotting meat, dead bodies-- what’s the difference? It’s been with him all his life. All his life. He crawls away to the next building over.Â
Judging by the height of the buildings, and the spacing between them, he guesses he’s about halfway to the city gates. Gods. How long has he been running? Have they found the body yet? He remembers the look in Katarina’s eyes before she ran past him. She knows. She would have sent for the guards immediately, for the city watch, begun searching for him all over Noxus Prime. How much longer before they reach him?Â
His mind buzzes. He needs to move, or he’ll have his head to pay. The shadows envelop him in a way that they never have before, but he’s too focused on escaping to notice. He takes one, two, three breaths, stands, and prepares to vault to the next roof towards his freedom.

        “How many today?”Â
They sit around a pit fire, a crude thing that was dug out from the dirt with their hands, insulated with rocks to keep the heat, and filled with dry sticks and leaves and paper and hair and whatever else will burn. As the question is posed, someone adds today’s newspaper to the flame to keep it from dying.Â
One kid, the tallest, with wild hair and missing teeth, is the first to reply. They call him Jagshark. He’s always ready to boast his count, make it a competition, raise the stakes. He puffs his chest out, and says, “Three.”Â
Another, smaller, but the most physically threatening, with homemade street tattoos and muscles that don’t belong on a young teenager. He rips off a piece of jerky with this teeth, chewing loudly. He’s called Bones, because he always talks about how his favorite sound is that of bones snapping. He grins ugly, food still in his mouth, and says, “Four.”Â
The last is silent. The youngest, he’s cloaked in shadow, long, dark hair draping his face like curtains. His knees are pulled up to his chest, making him appear smaller than he already is. He doesn’t meet the eyes of the other two boys, but they’re used to that by now. He’s the weird one. Some the other street kids gave up on trying to poke fun at him ages ago when he didn’t bother to give any of them the satisfaction of having hurt his feelings. The rest stopped when some of the more persistent bullies were found dead, heads nearly severed completely from their bodies, in their makeshift tents.Â
        They call him Talon.Â
The one called Talon raises his hands, palms outward, splaying his fingers wide as if he’s pressing them against a wall. It’s his way of saying: Ten.Â
“Ten?” Jagshark scoffs. “There’s no fucking way, dude.”Â
Talon’s eyes brighten; he seems to have anticipated the disbelief. From his worn leather pouch he produces ten noses, placing them all neatly in a line before the fire. Bones and Jagshark look on in grotesque fascination.Â
“Gods above.” Bones rips off another bit of jerky, but doesn’t avert his eyes. “We need to get you to a shrink or something.” It’s a joke-- implying any of them could afford something like that. Implying psychiatrists exist in Noxus, and aren’t something exclusive to the Piltovan elite.Â
Talon ignores the comment. “It’s not how many you kill,” he says in his small voice, yet somehow it’s just as threatening as a commander’s barking orders. “It’s how much you steal.” He follows up his wisdom with pulling several riches from his pouch; a golden pocketwatch, precious jewels, a nobleman’s wallet, a few golden teeth. “But you insisted on making it a competition. How much did you two get?”
Bones and Jagshark exchange a look. “Uhhh...,”Â
Talon gives them a hard look, from under his lashes, before deftly putting all of his treasure back in his pouch. He leaves the noses-- perhaps as a warning they should have taken.Â
They try to kill Talon in the night as he sleeps, try to do to him what he did to all those Noxian upperclassmen. It doesn’t work, because Talon learned to never really sleep, and he’s left with the two bloody bodies of people he almost considered friends at his feet. He sighs through his nose, sheathes the knife, and picks up his pouch to head to one of the lower markets. He’ll eat well today.Â
oh, if you were wondering where @thefuryofslaughter and i have been for the past couple weeks
i live, and as much as i would love some snowdown interactions, talon is, uh... talon, and probably has never really participated in the holiday. i don't see the du couteaus as the festive type. i have replies to do anyway, but i love reading the festivities on my dash <3

Kayn is attentive. He can see the way that Talon struggles and hesitates to do or say anything before the shadow assassin, and so Kayn is patient. He doesn’t reach out to him, or try to move closer, or try to finish Talon’s sentences while he so slowly forms his words. He just watches and waits, and by the time Talon has finished speaking, there’s a softer kind of smile on Kayn’s face. He lets out a breath through his nose, and one corner of his lip twitches up.
“You can trust me, Talon. I know I’ve said little about myself, but… you and I are similar. I see myself in you, from when I was still Noxian and still recovering from being a Noxian.”
He’s trying to say what he can to further earn that trust. He wants Talon to understand why he can be trusted–why he would not harm Talon or manipulate him. Him getting close to him is not some trick, it’s not something that Kayn does for selfish or secretive reasons.
Maybe… maybe there is some selfishness involved. A pathetic little need to have someone who understood his own struggles. Kayn speaks as if he’s already recovered from his past, as of it doesn’t still claw at the back of his consciousness when he’s not looking, peeling up scabs that once covered his wounds in such an ugly manner. All his life he’s been around people hurt by Noxus, but it was different when he had been forced to perform that hurt. A victim as much as a purpotrator. This is what Noxus did.
“I want you as my ally, Talon. Trust me when I say that I only want our relationship to be good and mutual.”
Good. Mutual. Ally. Talon knows these words, knows what they’re supposed to mean, and yet the way Kayn says them now is almost like a foreign tongue to Talon’s ears. He wants this? He wants this, for the benefit of both of them? Talon always considered Noxus his ally, but what that good? Was it mutual? Talon had never considered it before now. It was all he knew, all he ever expected to know. Being forced to face those questions now and realize the answer to both of them is no makes his mind spin.Â
Noxus wasn’t fair to him. Kayn wishes to be so. The realization crawls over him like steel wool, scraping and cutting even along his rough skin. And yet it’s true. And yet he can’t deny it.Â
Talon reaches-- on his own volition-- for Kayn’s hand, slow and hesitant. He doesn’t want to hold it; he simply grasps it, curling his fingers around the palm. It’s a deliberate action, and his way of showing that he is accepting Kayn’s offer. He wants this. He... needs this. And it’s taken him more than long enough to accept this truth.Â
Talon looks at Kayn in those bright white eyes, still hand in hand. “If you... go back on your word,” he says, gentle tone betraying his harsh gaze. “I’ll have both your eyeballs on a silk string.”

1.) talon is the biggest bottom to ever bottom. boy ain’t got a single dominant bone in his body.
2.) talon's concept of gender is loose at best and he only uses he/him pronouns and masculine terms because that's what everyone else uses for him. he sees himself as genderless since he's a tool and tools don't have gender; as he escapes noxus and begins the recovery process he'll be drawn more to they/them and she/her pronouns because they're both so disconnected from his trauma. his view on his own actual gender won't change much though, so he's pretty solidly agender, you could say

Kayn eventually seemed satisfied with his hair, and his hands slowed to simply comb his fingers through in a gentle and consistent motion. He weight shifted from one foot to the other as Talon spoke to him in short, simple sentences. Talon was awkward, what in the way he regarded the shadow assassin, the way his posture stayed so stiff, the way he spoke in few words and as if his thoughts had already completed a conversation before he uttered the last sentence of it. Kayn couldn’t help but pity him, though; he knew Noxus well enough to understand that it could affect people in such a way. It twisted the humanity out of innocents in all sorts of unusual and torturous ways, and Kayn wondered how exactly it’d done that to this man–and he thought of how he would never allow it to do it again to Talon.
“Mean what, Talon…?”
Talon doesn’t know what he means. The emotions he’s experiencing are much too complex for him to even begin to parse, let alone find the words to vocalize. A conflict of values and desires and needs and ideals all being swept around in his head, like a dead body caught up in the river’s current. He has that stiff look about him, like he usually does, but his eyes are different this time; soft, almost, like he’s beginning to accept what it truly means to trust.Â
He approaches Kayn slowly, carefully, as if he’s worried Kayn will make a last-ditch effort to murder him. Talon almost hopes he does; trust is new. Trust is scary. He almost wishes he could go back to the paranoia and the fear and the threats to cut off limbs should someone step too close. At least the fear is familiar. At least he knows how to handle that.Â
Kayn doesn’t try to murder him. Talon stops about a foot away, a length that Talon isn’t usually comfortable with. He opens his mouth, and attempts to begin the complicated process of speaking what he feels.Â
“I don’t... know. What... I mean.” Talon takes long pauses between each word, to breathe, to think, to feel. “But... I... feel like... I can almost... trust you.” He swallows heavy, and refuses to meet Kayn’s eyes. “And that’s...,” He can’t articulate it. Or he can, but he doesn’t want to. “...Bad.”

Talon looks at the ground, then up at Kayn, then down again, then up, desperately trying to uncover the ulterior motive that Kayn is hiding that Talon refuses to believe just isn’t there. There always is. Why else would he bother? But he digs and digs and digs and nothing he thinks he finds adds up. Nothing. Kayn could have gutted him when he was at the peak of his climax, but he didn’t. He could have done so much earlier, but. He. Didn’t.Â
So he must-- and this, perhaps, is the second most difficult thing Talon has ever made himself accept-- be telling the truth.Â
Talon nods, stow but sure. “It was.” There’s a change in him. It’s subtle, but like gentle rippling waves on an otherwise still lake, apparent. He looks Kayn in those pure white eyes of his with a sort of revolted awe, like he’s disgusted with himself for feeling as if he can trust Kayn.Â
“You mean it,” Talon says, chest tight. “Don’t you?”
talon is very clever, but he's not very... smart. he's a quick thinker and an excellent problem solver, but he can't read or write, he can't do math; if he were taught to do these things i have no doubt he would be very apt at them but anything that doesn't directly apply to survival he doesn't concern himself with. his emotional intelligence is also extremely low. hes kind of a dumb fuck
commission of a blood splattered talon.
needless to say i got super excited to do this one /patshisprettyface
That's what people do, Talon. They have sex for fun.

Kayn doesn’t kill him. Kayn doesn’t even summon his scythe. Kayn doesn’t look like he has the intent to kill at all. Kayn does move closer, dropping to all fours to crawl between his legs, giving Talon a completely unreciprocated kiss. He fell from Kayn to get away from him, gods damn it. This is not what he wanted. Yet he seems frozen, unable to move at the expense of shattering the fragile bond of what Talon perceives to be their relationship.Â
Eventually he finds it in him to move, pushing back from Kayn using his feet. He stands, hurriedly righting his pants and shirt. He pulls his hood down and his scarf up; he doesn’t need to, but he feels as if he must.Â
What Talon fails to communicate to Kayn is that he feels they just did something unspeakably wrong. Letting yourself become vulnerable to such things as sexual desire is a surefire way to find yourself dead. He enjoyed it-- gods, did Talon enjoy it-- but all of the potential consequences are flooding back to him now that he can think straight.Â
He wants to run. But he doesn’t. Not yet.Â
“You really... just did it for fun,” Talon says. “Didn’t you?”
