I spent way too long on this
about 5 hours at least
I spent way too long on this
about 5 hours at least
So I recently watched PHM and through fan content am now watching Iron Lung in a few days
I have also played through subnautica
I can not stop thinking about a crossover with these three, it would be so funny to get Grace Simon and Ryley in the same room
The "Random "expendable" dudes sent somewhere in space and forced to witness something between horrors and beauties beyond human comprehension that will irrevocably change them forever" gang.
Love how their a venn diagram of Grace and Simon with Ryley being in the middle.
Subnautica as a horror game, but not because of the hungry creatures or crushing depth or darkness or vastness of the ocean planet.
Because of the deaths of everyone on that ship, people that Ryley knew and maybe some he liked or was friends with or cared about or talked to more than once. And then they're all just gone.
Because of the weight of being alone on a planet that is, while not evil, harsh and foreign. The weight of loneliness that only grows and builds as he listens to more and more audio logs, from people he couldn't save, who are already long dead, who don't even have bodies to bring home as a last dignity.
Because of the need to survive, the forced need to dig deeper and further down in himself, to keep going, to keep trying, to have to pull himself up from nothing and just try and not die, a risk that he's faced with constantly, and that he's well aware of.
Because of the fact that once it's over, he's just a disposable face in the crowd, a number to crunch, and then, he's made into an exploitable asset for Alterra's bottom line.
Because of the survivor's guilt. Because of the loss. Because of the isolation. Because of surviving something nobody else can ever understand or relate to, and then still being expendable.
Because of realising that he was likely, always expendable anyway.
The company doesn't care because you are replaceable and it has profits to make.
The universe can't care because everything is irreplaceable and it has no more tears to shed.
Angry Ryley, call that getting riled up.
Hes Sub not-okay with this
Ryley who can't handle life back in Alterra space, for any number of reasons. And it shows in ways that earn him scathing looks.
The glowing lights and once normal background noise will never be anything compared to real sunlight and the sound of the ocean around him. It's always too quiet, or too loud, no in between. He's always pacing.
He stumbles over his own feet constantly. He's been swimming so much that walking feels strange and foreign. He's not used to being able to breathe without the Rebreather. He has phantom sensations of the dive mask.
His skin looks strange, even to himself, and not just because of the Kharaa scars. He's so utterly used to wearing the dive suits, and the fact that he never took them off, only to change maybe twice, makes looking at himself a distressing experience. He feels exposed.
The alarms and beeping and otherwise noisy crowds and conversations behind his back are also too loud, after all, he's only heard water purifiers, the ocean, Reefbacks, and his own breathing for weeks.
He becomes extremely possessive over the things he still has left. After all, his tools, his vehicles, his PDA, the items he had in storage, they were the only things keeping him alive.
He gags on the now bland, synthetic foods and people stare at him in bewilderment as he tears into things with his hands and unceremoniously shoves them in his mouth.
He's not used to being unarmed and constantly wonders where his knife is, and on reflex, goes to pull it out and hold it in front of him when startled. But his hands are now empty.
There is no going back.
I love things like this. I love going in depth on how experiences change a video game character in ways most people wouldn't realize. For all that time Ryley was on that planet, he became part of something.
Part of a circle of life rather than a system of profits. He was a drop in an ocean, whose mere ripples could create tidal waves, rather than a cog in a machine, who will break and be replaced. He saw how connected everything was, instead of being told to keep his head down and do his job.
He saw the bigger picture. He was part of a bigger story. He was allowed to move freely in that untouched part of the universe. He was allowed to see how he moved it. He was allowed to feel how it moved him. He was allowed to swim with the tides.
And even though he goes among the stars, there will always be part of him that rests where it fell among the sand.
I'm feeling emotional about the idea of Subnautica and change.
Being physically changed by the Kharaa. Being emotionally changed by the beauty of 4546b. Being mentally changed by the trauma, but also being mentally changed in realising that living isn't just surviving, and that I think Ryley learned, and never knew before, that no act of kindness is ever wasted or too small.
The way the planet itself was changed, both by terrible mistakes and acts of cruelty, and by the kindness Ryley bestowed and the devotion the Sea Emperor had for her children, for the planet's very survival.
Being unable to go back to before, and in a lot of ways, not wanting to go back to before. Just being changed, irreversibly and irrefutably.
Forever.
The folly of man is never realizing how connected everything is. To realize that folly and overcome it is to become part of something bigger than yourself.
shitposting a little bit
Ryley Robinson my beloved
Delphine hate is crazy because what do you mean this random woman gets more hate than the guy who committed war crimes against an indigenous group and whose city is racially segregated (i’m talking about ulfric)
Because you can say no to Ulfric and/or fight him.
I think Delphine is actually a kinda cool and well written character. I'd used to not super like her, but thinking more about her position both within the plot of Skyrim and within TES lore, she's a lot cooler. What do you mean the badass emperor's secret agent/dragon slayer turned renegade Thalmor fighter is a bad character? I mean, sure, she's a bit obtuse when you first meet her, but like, she's actively been in hiding for years, and is trying to not get fucking killed by fascists, which, y'know, reasonable. Sure, asking to kill a character who does some mentoring to you is maybe an overstep, but it makes sense for one of the very few surviving members of the ancient DRAGON HUNTING ORGANIZATION to suggest that this dragon, who has killed a lot of people in the past and for all she knows is still killing people (dragons look a lot alike, can you tell a blood dragon from a legendary at a glance when they're flying overhead? Probably not) to ask you to kill a dragon. I wish there was an option to say "nah, he's chill, he taught me a lot of stuff about the Thu'um," but since there's a crazy amount of cut content, and unfinished plotlines, I don't think there would have been a way for that to happen. Also, with how the fandom treats other warrior women like Uthgerd the Unbroken and Mjoll the Lioness, you'd think the lady who kills dragons and fascists for a living would be treated better. Hell, Astrid gets more grace, even though she ran the Dark Brotherhood into the ground, set you up to get killed, and got your friends killed. She gets grace because why, exactly? She said sowwy? But Delphine gets no grace because she's worried about a dragon being left unchecked. Sure.
I, for one, do hate Astrid, but I also dislike Delphine aswell. What I hate is that we can't tell her no and have a conversation about it, but thats really the devs fault. I think most hate simply stems from built up hate of not being able to say no and feeling like it's forced upon you- similar to how Maridias quest and Nazeems lines aren't "bad" but really annoying, and therefore hated. Delphine is cool, but she's not fully fleshed out which makes her a bad character. She's to focused on the past- a past of dragon tyranny and dragon slaying that she never even saw. She's too caught up in "I help the Dragonborn, dragons are evil, the Thalmor are evil, I need to help the Dragonborn kill evil people" that she can't see anything wrong with her ideals. She has the same problem that many people in Skyrim have: They can't understand that the Dragonborn isn't going to be who they want. The Greybeards expect them to be a Greybeard, the Stormcloaks expect them to be a Stormcloak, the Imperials expect them to join the Empire, the Thalmore probably expect them to be an Altmer, and Delphine expects them to be a Blade. But Delphine is the only one who doesn't give the Dragonborn an option. The Greybeards understand (somewhat) and the other factions are optional to join (except the Thalmor, though you can aid them), but Delphines expectations aren't. She can't be refused and she can't be reasoned with. Its not that she's particularly evil, it's that even with all the good intentions in the world, if you don't take no for an answer, you will never do anything good in your life.
