I think one of the reasons I wasn’t shocked about seeing Azriel’s desire for Elain (beside, you know, four books of foreshadowing) is because I had already been shocked by Cassian at the beginning of ACOSF.
What do I mean by that? I mean when Cassian talked about his vivid fantasies about Nesta’s ass and her giving him a handjob. That is legitimately the first blatantly sexual thought we get in Cassian’s POV. And when I read that I WAS shocked!
I think people don’t realize how graphic SJM got sexually in comparison to the original trilogy. Like yeah, we had some smutty scenes, but no where near as detailed and numerous as in ACOSF. And we didn’t get Rhysand’s POV (and his sexual thoughts about Feyre) until much later. Even when we did, they weren’t near as blunt or graphic as Cassian’s.
Honestly, I was kind of turned off and thrown when I read it. I hear Antis talk about how it’s “just lust” with Az and Elain, but if we’re being real here, Cassian’s POV in the beginning of ACOSF felt way more like “just lust” in comparison. I mean good god, at least Az’s thoughts are about pleasuring Elain! About giving!
If Az’s thoughts has been like Cassian’s, I might be inclined to agree with the “just lust” idea. But they weren’t and it’s not the same.
Part of me thinks that SJM is just being bolder now with her sexual stuff, and the fandom isn’t ready for it. At least in regards to Az.
Idk, I just think it’s weird how Cassian was never called toxic for having waaaaay more lewd thoughts about Nesta before they were together. 🤷🏼♀️
