Whispers and rumors often follow in the shadow of a hexling. They may look human, act human, but there is just always something just a little bit off... Enough so, that in small towns and villages, they often become outsiders. They carry curses, they say, they are the reason milk sours and the reason children fall ill, with their innate powers and mysterious eyes. Some learn to melt into the crowd as they grow older, where others never manage to fit fully into the society they were born into; yet another few manage to thrive in their role as different, becoming the wise hedgewitch people look to for advice and healing. This verse is inspired by the homebrew dnd 5e race hexlings, adjusted to fit into a more general fantasy or urban fantasy setting.
The twins had never known a human family, for as long as they could remember. From a young age, they lived on their own, performing tricks in the street for scraps. Whenever the people of a village began to notice the twins' odd natures and whispers of "witches" started to follow in their wake, they moved on. However, as they grew older, their natures became harder to hide.
Each twin sports a Mark on their cheek - Ly.ney a teardrop shape under his right eye.
His eyes are slitted like a cats, and reflect light in the darkness. His nails are more like claws, and he keeps them hidden under gloves. If he smiles too wide, one can catch of glimpse of too-sharp canines in his mouth.
The twins excel in tricks of the mind, illusions, and veils. Dreams haunt their sleep, and he has learned how to flee his own dreams, into another's. He collects information like treasure, for no other reason than the sheer joy of having it.
He does not like to talk about their life, before Father found them. In one town, they caught the attention of a noble, who believed they could attract quite the crowd. For a time, he fed and housed the twins and hosted their shows in his parlor, pocketing the entrance fee. It was during one of these shows that his sister caught the eye of another noble.
Money exchanged hands, and then his sister was gone. He escaped that night and searched for her, although it took him days to locate exactly which estate she had been taken to. Powers he hadn't used before manifested, helping him to infiltrate the grounds, knock out the guards, and find her in the large house.
By the time he found her, someone else had gotten there : those who wished to hurt you are dead.
The mysterious woman offered them a home, a family, a chance to master the strange power flowing through their veins. In return, she asked only for loyalty.
Of course the twins accepted.
Under their Father's guidance, they sharpened their claws and learned how to make them hurt. They learned how to swipe secrets that fell from careless lips, and how to drag them from unwilling mouths. They learned to play their cards close to their chest, and then they were sent off into the world, sometimes together, sometimes on their own, her eyes and ears and sometimes her claws to further mysterious ends only 'Father' and her House are privy to.
