i think what really pisses me off about deleting the cas sewing scene is that i think of cas as a very hands forward person. remember this post about cas looking at his hands as a grounding technique? you know how cas could heal dean with a thought but he does it with touch anyway? to be tactile and tender? he is a character who desperately wants to participate in the acts of creation and repair and making things whole and new. that's why i think he would take up weaving or whittling or some other hands-on craft. or sewing!!
and they took away such a emotional meaningful scene showing exactly that because it wasn't important to sam and dean's journey
#spn is about castiel's hands actually #starting with the handprint #and ending with one via @alltoowellcas
it's about! contact! the laying on of hands! what's palpable and tangible!
for those of you who have never seen it:
and the context of this scene and the episode its in ties in soo well with the post i linked above
cas realizes that gabriel and the situation that they are in is fake because the inner lining of his trenchcoat is not torn like it was in the real world
in the aired version of the episode, there is a flashback to the beginning of the episode when cas ripped his coat at the moment that he realizes this has all been fake.
but in the full version of the episode with the deleted scenes, there is no flashback because we've already had the visual reminder of his torn coat through the mending scene
cas uses the evidence (or lack thereof!) of work he did with his hands to understand that reality and his perception of it has been altered!
not only would it have been a good character moment for us to see the condition he's in wrt his grace, but it also would have served the narrative arc of the episode better to keep the scene in
