My defense of Otherkin /Therian

We don’t know if we have a soul. We don’t know if we have a place to go in the afterlife. Science has not given us any “laws” in this regard. We have had studies attempting to figure these things out, but nothing concrete.

For me, Otherkin is a way of figuring out what I feel like my soul is. No, I don’t believe my soul is that of a humans. Do I suddenly deserve to go to a mental institution cause I don’t believe my soul is human? No, I don’t.

If you want to throw me in there for something as silly as that, then throw people in jail who believe there is someone who believes that there is a guy in the sky who dictates if you go to a forever paradise or to a torturous afterlife because you disagree with them (obviously sarcasm here, but my point sticks).

Concepts of Otherkin and Therian have been around since at least the ancient Greeks. It had a resurgence in the 1970s/1980s and again once tumblr, a social media website got popular.

Petplay =/= Therian

Lately I have been searching for a lot of my reblog material in the wolfkin tag because it’s been easier to find good wolf aesthetic stuff there than in the wolf play tag.  I know I’m not wolfkin in anyway, but it got me thinking though about the difference between being a pet player (like myself) and being a kin type or therian.

Now the Urbandictionary states the definition of a therian to be:  “They differ from Furries in the sense that furries want to be the animal, and therians “are” the animal. Often therianthropes feel that they share some part of themselves (mind, soul, etc) with their animal, essentially feeling that their “two halves” are one in the same.”

For a lot of therian’s, it’s something spiritual that they feel within them.  This can range from them believing that their animal is like their spirit guide or totem to the belief that they were that animal in a past life.  I have heard the term ‘transspecies’ used occasionally to describe where some feel as if they’ve been born into the wrong species.

Now this could be just my opinion, but this differs from pet play for me because what I do is simply that.  Play.  I play at being a wolf or sometimes a coyote when I’m feeling bratty.  I enjoy the freedom of the headspace and forgetting about human problems for a short time.  I do love having my head scratched, but really I just love when nails are scratched on me at any level of roughness and anywhere on me.

Pet play has been put under the BDSM umbrella as a kink, despite a lot of pet players not being interested in it for sexual reasons.  As always, I recommend a lot of introspection from anyone in the kink community on figuring out what they like and what they feel is them.
