You know what I really loved about the episode Mr Universe?

Before we've seen how overly-strict parenting is not good, with connie hiding everything from her parents, and how suffocatingly supportive and pushy parenting is also not good, like with Sadie wanting to hide her interests from her mom. And now we finally see how Greg's laid-back and overly-lenient parenting was not good either.

and none of them are bad people for it, all of them had good intentions. Greg didn't want to stifle Steven's creativity and interests, Barbra wanted to support Sadie, and Connie's parents just wanted her to be safe. But they were going too far in their own respective parenting styles, to their children's detriment.

Quick SU:F Fragments theory.

The reason that steven’s power/shield is manifesting like that is because he feels as estranged from everyone as ever.

Let’s review. Steven’s shield now manifests as a blank hexagon. I’d say this might be because:

1. His shield was never his shield. It was his mother’s, who he now all but completely hates.

2. pentagons don’t naturally fit together, but diamonds do, and we all know why he doesn’t use those.

3. It also represents his complete and total lack of an identity right now. He doesn’t know who he is, so the weapon that represents him is entirely blank.  

Edit: 4.They’re no longer shields. They’re walls. They’re not for protecting others anymore. They’re for keeping HIMSELF safe. To separate. To Isolate.

Edit 2: 5. His main way of using this offensively isn’t throwing it like he did with his shield. It’s *pushing*. PUSHING OTHERS AWAY.

me: *thinks about how when future started steven had a defined idea of who he was and what he cared about, and as the series has gone on his mental health has deteriorated to the point he and the gems can't communicate, he can't connect with his friends, greg or connie anymore, he's traumatised to the point that even people raising their voices at him makes him wince or even lose control of his powers, he not only seems to be falling into the same traps his mom did but has gone even worse by shattering another gem, and once that gem was restored she praised him for doing it, and he's so utterly incapable of connecting with anyone on earth that he's about to run away to the diamonds whose abusive parenting pink left in the first place*

Ok but, an underrated plot twist is that rose/pink wasn’t a healing gem like we all first thought. She actually had an array of offensive and defensive powers, but what mattered was that she chose to be a healing gem when she became rose quartz. If only someone had told steven.. instead of letting him think that he had to be a healer for literally years. Maybe he wouldn’t hate himself so much rn
