Gilgamesh was used by the gods to keep humanity in check, so humans could rely on the Gods. He was a kind-hearted and wise kid; eventually, as he grew older, he realized he was completely alone. As someone who was 2/3 divine, he saw things that neither the gods nor humans could understand. He respected the gods and loved humanity, but he chose a path of hating and loathing both the gods and humanity. Enkidu understood why. Hence why Gilgamesh became a tyrant. It is asked by Enkidu asks Gilgamesh why he decided to defeat Humbaba, because he hadn't thought it was to defend his people, since the people of Uruk suffered under Gilgamesh's tyranny. But it was exactly that. Gilgamesh fought Humbaba to protect his people; he also mentioned that he had a job to protect his people, although he describes himself as " the northwind".
I guess he describes himself as the north wind to emphasize that, being a protector, you mustn't coddle up to those you protect. He wants humanity to stand on their own two feet and not depend on any god.
