I'm not the most consistent person. But I'm hoping my appreciation for gintama can push me to be more so, than I was before. I've seen a lot of unfair assumptions of gintae peeps. I'm hoping my input will expell those myths.

Otae in Gintoki’s kimono - study

I probably comitted a major crime against the kimono police. Styling men’s kimono into female style is probably not a good idea. I’m sure the silhouette will not turn out great. Anyhow the above is what I think it will look like if the sleeves were altered to resemble those on women's kimono, while leaving the collar as it is.

Gintoki height is 177cm. Standard male kimono length is height - 27 cm. 177-27 = 150 cm (actual length of gintoki’s kimono)

Standard female kimono length = height of person. Otae is 168 cm. So her kimono length is 168 cm too.

Gintoki’s kimono may actually be too short for Otae lololol. “Boyfriend shirt” trope unfortunately will not apply BUT!!! There’s a certain charm in seeing one’s characteristic color on one’s SO methinks.

Anyway. I’m gonna be honest here. Otae in Gintoki characteristic colors is interesting.

Historical notes: Regency Era (1811-1820) also coincides with Late Edo Period though it is 20-30 years earlier than Gintama’s time setting. There are similiraties in the lifestyle of high society of japan and britain at that time. Women had little rights, were often married off to same or higher social class, people visited and stayed in each other’s houses all the time, etc.

I’ve been trying to read some Jane Austen for inspiration tbh. I’ve only managed to finish Pride and Prejudice coz i just find the others so boring and difficult to understand. Also i just couldnt handle the 10+ year age difference of the other couples. Anyhoww I’ve had enough of the au and making this was my way of celebration lol.

Happy Birthday, Sacchan 🎉

Happy Birthday to one of my all-time favorite characters. She's a fantastic character, and I thank Yū Kobayashi for doing her character justice. I cannot imagine anyone else who could pull off such comedic timing and convey such powerful emotion to bring a character like Sarutobi to life as she has. I always loved how there is a woman who can keep up with the men of the series in the dirty jokes department. That's something impressive when you consider the strong male ensemble of Gintama.

Sadly, Sorachi did not go through with the Ninja arc he initially intended for the Oniwabanshu. I wish he had honed in on her skills and interest in Gintoki more frequently, since that's how she came into the series by literally crashing down into his life, and why she continues to play a consistent role in his life. Her confidence in her skills and her unwavering devotion to Gintoki deserved to be taken more seriously than what ended up being written in the end.

She puts on a front to combat whatever she assumes has been going on between Otae and Gintoki; however, her bravado and composure, which make her appear to be the "better" woman, makes her rare moments of vulnerability even more notable to me.

I wish the ninjas had gotten the initial arc they were supposed to, because this aspect of her character would be more evident to fans. I admire how much she truly ended up caring not only for Gintoki but also for the rest of the people around her in the end. She ended up loving and appreciating her friends and how they would laugh together.

I especially wished for a Ninja arc because, unlike many fan favorites, she never gave up hope or wavered in doubt when things were at their worst. We see a good example of this in the silly Monkey Hunter arc when everyone grows frustrated to the point of doubting that they will ever get back what they lost. She presses forward and inspires Gintoki to continue the search, rather than accept the current state of things.

In Be Forever Yorozuya, she breaks down in front of her rival Otae, expressing a rare showcase of vulnerability and dissatisfaction. Maintaining the same appearance and composure until the man she loves returns, and unable to accept how the strongest foe she's known could accept that lying down. Regardless of the inevitable and melancholy, she refuses to let go without a fight and chooses to hold onto hope and maintain the status quo as best she can.

As I understand it, the Shogun Assassination arc was something Sorachi had in mind in the early lessons of Gintama. The Ninja arc was mainly scrapped, but elements of what he had planned for Zenzou and Sarutobi made it in. Sachan, almost from the beginning of the arc to the end, takes a serious initiative in the mission and makes it her number one duty to make sure the leader of the Oniwaban makes it out alive. As things become increasingly bleak by the second, she continues to affirm that everyone will make it out alive and things will return to the way they always were. A proper arc that she has earned never came to be, but I wish it had because she epitomizes what Gintama is known for, promising to return home no matter what, so that everyone can continue to smile.

267 There was a communication device right in front of Kyuyo's control room - and it was a stroke of luck that a communication device that was still usable remained. After finishing his communication with Katsura, Shoyo turned to Shinpachi, who was waiting nearby, and said, "It's just as I heard. You guys should get out of here as soon as possible." He told him that and hurried on. However, his body was so weakened that he couldn't move as he wanted, and he staggered and put his hand on the communication console. "Mr. Shoyo!" Shinpachi tried to rush over, but he was stopped by his other hand. "It's just flesh and blood... I was living forever, but now I'm being chased by time." I smile bitterly at the constant flow of life, and support myself as I move forward.

268 They were in front of the control room. The door seemed to be sensory and started to open automatically. There must have been a difference in air pressure, as the escaping air turned into a strong wind and blew in. "But this little life I have left is tied to the tall cedar trees. That's why --" Shoyo looked back at Shinpachi and the others before entering the room. "You must protect the future they have spun." "......"

With renewed resolve, I enter the control room, where the wind is blowing wildly. The inside is unexpectedly spacious and bright. The control room is built in a spherical shape, with gun barrel-like devices filling the walls. All of them had their nozzles facing the center of the room. They were probably intended to control the Altana that was being sucked out. The Altana that needed to be controlled swelled up into a twisted, evil-looking ball of light, with bands of light swarming around it like a group of snakes swarming around a ball.

He struggled to make his way over the bridge to get closer to it --

and when he finally reached the end, he heard the sound of a door closing behind him. At the same time, the typhoon-like wind calmed down, his turbulent hair and cloak regained their composure. Shouyou looked closely at Altana, who looked like she might go wild at any moment, and glad. "Maybe my thousand years have been for this instant. Please hold on...even just a second longer..." He touches his chest and speaks to the heart that shines deep within. "One second won't be enough." He hears a voice from behind him and turns around in surprise. There he sees Shinpachi, Kagura, and Sadaharu. "If we combined everyone's lifespans, we'd be able to see the face of that stupid disciple."

Kagura nodded, and Sadaharu barked "Woof," as if he agreed. Without listening to our warnings, Shinpachi stood behind Shoyo on his left, and Kagura and Sadaharu stood behind him on his right. Myo was nowhere to be seen, but they sensed her presence on the other side of the door, near the communication device.

Although the Starry Sky Cult was annihilated, there was a possibility that the few survivors would become martyrs and attack this place. They probably took the front line to fend them off. "You guys...!" "I'm sorry. We can't just go on like this. "I told you," Shinpachi said, gazing at Altana. Kagura also looked up and continued, "It's your job to get your reward."

292 His outstretched fingertips could not reach the edge of the cliff, and they pointlessly carved away the cross section of the passage. He could hear Kondo and the others screaming from a distance that was beyond his reach with his hands or feet. * Kagura used her umbrella to shoot down the pieces of rubble falling from above. Shoyo's hands were covered in scaly crystals, and they had hardened up to his wrists.

As the Earth's Altana loses its strength, it becomes even more violent, trying to overwhelm him. As he pushes it back with all his might, Shoyo's crystallization spreads up to his elbow, and his skin begins to break with a sound. Shinpachi, who is supporting him from behind, gasps as his body peels away.

293 …Despite that, Shouyou was smiling.

It was strange that they were guarding the control room.

She had slid headfirst into the cliff, and was now lying on her stomach on the collapsed passage,

Putting strength into the hand that was on the floor, she slowly pulled Gintoki up.

He arched his body so that he was falling backwards --

The next moment, Myo threw him like a Tomoe throw, toward the control room behind him.

"Go ahead!"

may i ask if gintae can be considered as parallel characters? since they share a lot of similarities in values and all. what do you think? i love parallel characters as much as narrative foils

Roles in community and family

Both are in wish-granting or dream-fulfilling kind of business (otae in hospitality/hostess sector and Gintoki as an Odd Jobs guy)

Considered as bosses/leaders and top class in their specific areas of specialty

Aniki (boss man, big brother) / Anego (boss lady, big sister) persona

Gintoki is kind of the Joui Vanguard (in the Joui war he is the first to rush in, and in action scense he always works alone and is the first to deploy himself)

Otae is also first line of attack/offensive defense (Silver Soul Arc-Siege of Kabukichou)

both had strong mentors that defined their way of life and philosophy. Gintoki knew Shoyo best while Otae understood their father best.

Gintoki canonically sees himself as surrogate father to Kagura sometimes

Otae raised her brother on her own after their father died

Otae also wholeheartedly accepts the Anego title Kagura bestowed on him

Gintoki is considered by Shinpachi as his Aniki too

Speak and curse in the same kabukichou accent

Personality

both act as Boke (stupid man) to the other straight man characters (tsukkomi)

both tend to hurt the people they love in order to protect/save them

Both can be incredibly self-sacrificial and suicidal for others and for their core beliefs

Both can be truly cruel at insulting others and each other (fatphobia, ageism, classism, misogyny, etc)

both are very very good at finding each other's weakness and exploiting them to cause most damage (or get them to do what the other wants)

both are very good at finding/recognizing each other no matter where or when

both have been positive and negative change to each other in many ways

Friends and Admirers

Both of them have similar group of friends. They operate in the same circles.

both of them are well loved in their community for their strong leadership and cunning bastard personas

both of them have admirers that are mirrors of each other: Kondou-Sarutobi, Kyuubei-Tsukuyo

Both of then are parallels and foils of Hijikata

Both of them are used to mingling/hanging out with opposite sex and know how to play their charms well to their advantage

Storywise

In my old posts, both Otae and Gintoki have preached the same things to other people at different points in time, which means they seriously have a lot of shared values and both live under the same life philosophy.

Them doing dogeza in Beam Saber Arc (nuff'said)

Their tragic future selves dying at the same time in Be Forever Yorozuya Movie and Novelization

Both risked their lives/ imprisonment/death penalty for Hijikata and shinsengumi

Otae earning Queen of Kabukichou title from Otose, Gintoki seen as Tatsugurou/Jirocho Protege

Similar Stands

Lots of manga panels where they mirror the same actions and dialogue on different pages

Fighting style: Otae is rooted in reality and the traditional martial concepts; Gintoki is more freestyle, fantastical and wild

Fighting Style: Gintoki is Vanguard, Otae is backup/Rearguard or Home Defense/Baggage Train

Sexual experience: gintoki isnt a virgin and have slept with men and women, otae is a virgin through and through

I will never understand what prompted such an absence after Yoshiwara in Flames. The arc was done but we definitely could have gotten more from her character.
