lol the amount of people who are like “how can Jugyeong even afford all that makeup” is a real mood. Also like... a lot of the makeup stuff seemed to alienate some of the readers. For the Asian people who don’t use makeup to look white like Jugyeong, it feels like a lot of work to relate to her :(

Was anyone else crying at this part or was it just me? I’m team Seojun all the way but Su-Ho was the first person to ever see Jugyeong without her makeup and accept her (outside her family). And when they parted ways and Su-Ho was crying alone on the plane. IT’S TOO SAD 😭

Loving all these comments which call out the 2nd episode of True Beauty where Jugyeong starts wearing makeup to hide her insecurities. Funny how whiteness=beauty in this comic, and thank god people are calling it out. Sometimes the comments are better than the comic they’re commenting on haha

Did anyone else notice that whenever Jugyeong is her “ugly” self with no makeup, she’s almost always in comedic situations? I don’t think that even once through out the series there’s been a very serious plot point that has happened when she wasn’t wearing makeup. It kind of makes her “ugliness” the butt of every joke. Seems like only pretty characters can have any sort of development. Also, haven’t we as a society progressed beyond the whole glasses=ugly thing?

The obvious Doc Martens product placement literally makes no sense lol. How is Seojun able to buy expensive shoes when in the exact same scene his family is talking about money problems? “True Beauty” is never tarnished, even when the characters clearly don’t have the means to buy all of this expensive stuff. It takes money to be pretty

It sucks that so many mono-lidded Asian women feel like double eyelid tape is an “absolute must.” I feel like True Beauty just deepens this idea that, to be attractive, you need to spend time and money on products like double eyelid tape or the other myriad of products Jugyeong uses to get ready every day.

I know I’m critical of True Beauty, but Seojun and Jugyeong’s relationship is actually super cute. It fills my heart in a way real life can’t. Now if I could just do something about the ways this story represents beauty...

Does anyone else notice that all the “beauty” in True Beauty is based on western beauty standards? The whole double-lid fixation, the clothing, the body types, the makeup use to hide Asian-ness? Don’t get me wrong, I love that True Beauty is bringing some Asian representation to western audiences, but I wish it didn’t focus so heavily on the white-ness of beauty. It’s almost like the creators are afraid that if they include too many traditionally “Asian” features in their characters, these characters won’t be accepted by the audience.

Does anyone remember the beginning of True Beauty where Jugyeong is first learning to use makeup so she can feel more empowered and stop getting bullied? It’s interesting that all this “empowerment” comes in the form of consumerism and buying a bunch of expensive makeup products (she literally spends all of her money buying makeup). And does anyone else notice that the double-eyelid glue and lenses fit a very western style of beauty? Hmmm...

I get that Su-Ho here was trying to assure our protagonist Jugyeong that she was still pretty without her makeup, but it sucks that Jugyeong can only find self worth when a man tells her she’s pretty. And then Su-Ho is framed as the hero because he’s a handsome dude who likes an “ugly” girl. Like, guys should not get a pat on the back just because they treat a non-conventionally attractive person nicely 🙄
