Happy April 1st everyone, and this isn't an april fools prank, the prompt list is HERE! The prompts were chosen through first a prompt jar that got a total of 40 responses (nearly double what we got last year!) that gave us roughly 350 prompts. From there 70 text and dialogue prompts were chosen and put in for the voting form. The top 31 of each type made it onto the list, one of each for each day of the month!

And, since this is our second year running Fluffy July, we have decided to DOUBLE the amount of alternate prompts as well! Like last year, 10 of them are the mods' favorite prompts that didn't quite make the cut for the list, but this year we also have 10 prompts that were fan-favorites!

1.) If you could sit down and finish any one of your wips without anythin stopping you, which fic would you choose?

Ooooooo this is a really tough one because ideally I’d like to be able to finish all my wips like that🤣🤣🤣 I think the one I would choose would be Air Mail Special. I have *so much* planned for the second half of that wip and the ending and I am SO EXCITED to get to those points and have my readers get there as well. Between the canon events that happen in the second half and my own things I’ve got planned to put Viola and the others through, it’s gonna be BIG and ROUGH and I am just SUPER excited to get there and finish that wip!

17.) Are there any songs you want to write a songfic for?

Ooooooooooooo. OOOOOOOOOOOO. The first one that my brain thought of when I saw this is “Ode to the Mets” by The Strokes. I have SO MANY songs that I would love to do songfics or songfic adjacent things for, but “Ode to the Mets” is one that has been itching at my brain for the past few months. It would just be a oneshot style kind of…character study…maybe? Idk. I envision everything as like pmvs/animatics/whatever. But it would definitely return to my fic “I Am No Mother, I Am No Bride, I Am King” and it would delve into Eve’s spiral post Ambush and her relationships with both Pierson and Somerset.

One of the nicest things I ever had a reader say to me was that I inspired her to start writing for the first time ever, because something I said made it click that she didn't have to write for any reason other than that she wanted to. Didn't have to worry about if it was "good", didn't have to care whether people would like it, didn't have put it on ao3, didn't have to share it with anyone; her own enjoyment of the story was enough.

PSA to fic readers, it is so hard to freak a fic writer out with your comments. we are just as crazy about the fic as you are.

tell me you love it. tell me it made you slam your laptop shut. tell me you brought it up at your college lecture about kink. key smash in all caps. quote the passage that made you think. i promise, we’ll love it.

we spend hours thinking about it, writing it, editing it. there is no such thing as over enthusiasm when you’re talking about our fics to us. we are sooooo weird about them, i assure you. you are just matching my freak. the freak bar is already set so high. feel no anxiety about enjoying something and letting the creator know.

I think one of the worst things a story can be is unproblematic.

Nothing makes a story more unreadable than being able to see the author squirm apologetically for the story they actually want to write—wringing their hands and imploring the reader please, please don’t be mad, I know it’s ideologically questionable but I need you to not be mad at me!

For example: a Good King™️. It’s one thing for a story to present a fictional monarchy and ask me to root for it. It’s another thing for a story to say, hey, I know what you’re thinking—but don’t worry! I can justify this premise! I have introduced a lot of convoluted self-aware political justifications for why my king is good and likable without actually asking any risky ideological questions! These characters aren’t actually problematic! Don’t be mad at me!

Commit to the bit. Apologetic, defensive writing designed to bypass obvious criticisms often winds up offending me far more than stories that are just kind of surface-level problematic. If I’m gonna be a hater you cannot stop me; the more you insist that a character is actually a good oil tycoon because of all these exceptional situations and beyond my reproach, the more I resent you and hate your stupid book.

For the Fic Ask Game!

Honestly can just be a tiny drabble, even just a few paragraphs if you wanna do it at all, but I’m gonna be angsty and say some Pierson angst would be wonderful🤣 (yes i know there will be Pierson angst in your fics what can I say😂😂 i like when this guy gets put in situations)

Hurt/comfort would be a delight as well if you don’t wanna get TOO angsty or wanna add some fluff in, and you know I love the OCs if you wanted to write them into it too (Isabella, Luciel, a random drabble showcasing the new Eleanor👀, hell an angsty sibling drabble with Maggie would also be fun!) but honestly if you wanna do it at all, I’d take any characters, OC or canon!

You write all kinds of angst so well and your angst scenes are always a treat to read, so I’m a sucker and would like more if you’re in the mood💖of course, no pressure to write anything at all if it’s not striking your fancy! Have a great day/rest of your day (whenever you see this lol)!

I came up with next to nothing on the sibling front 😂 but I have the first chapter of Unforgiving Minute outlined 👀 and that awkward "Wait - This is the person you write to?" scene is there. (In pieces for now and needs a lot of editing)

For the Pierson angst, I decided we should make Kasserine worse. With a lil pre-worse fluff.

This will probably eventually end up as a one/two shot when I have the bandwidth for it, but in the meantime here's a drabble that only sorta spiraled outta control a little bit ~

Pierson who has a best friend he's known since they were kids, maybe the moms were friends in school and met back up at their kids' class orientation. Her mom was a nurse who didn't survive the Influenza outbreak in 1918, so his mom stepped in where she could.

They get married shortly after graduation, she follows her in mother's footsteps and goes into the medical field and Pierson enlists. They end up being the physical manifestation of grumpy/sunshine and everyone is always surprised that Pierson is married. The entire time he and Turner were going through USMA Turner was also in the dark until he meets her at graduation.

Turner gets immense joy over the next few years watching people react to Pierson and his wife. Jokes are made by the younger personnel and they think the platoon vets are BS-ing them whenever they bring up how different Pierson is when his wife is around. 100% think the wife is a lie to make them look dumb until they inevitably see the two of them together and Pierson just melts. A complete 180 and he's leaning to hear her better and is all soft edges and patience.

So when the war happens, she gets transferred and ends up going with them. Everything goes fine at first, Pierson is more guarded on the ship/in the field than he was back on post in the US but isn't as harsh when the wife is around. Still is noticeably calmer / more relaxed when she's nearby but is quicker to snap when jokes are made about the nurses.

Anytime they're together it's just :

And that was a whole lot of background for how we're gonna make Kasserine worse.

For whatever reason (Leadership inexperience, surname mix-up, wrong place/wrong time) she ends up on the frontlines with them. Maybe Pierson knows at first, and both he and Turner argue to get her sent back to the field hospitals where she should've been when the first wave of artillery happens.

She ends up deeper in the Pass, I'm on the fence if Pierson/Turner are aware of it when the conflict starts up or if they think she's safely back with the rest of the reinforcements waiting.

Option A. They find out during the conflict that the transport she was on went the wrong way, maybe they find out her assignment in general was closer to the frontlines. Either way - part of the reason why Pierson attempted to hold the position is not just because he thought he could rescue the rest of his men but also because his wife was there. Turner has to fight much harder to get Pierson to retreat.

Or Option B. They think she's back with the rest of the nurses at the far line. Pierson doesn't want to give up ground both because of the squads trapped in the Pass, but also because giving up ground would bring the Italian tanks and German Artillery within range of the field hospitals. Turner can use the "I won't let you /You can't make her a widow" as leverage to try and get Pierson to retreat.

Ultimately, it's Kasserine so everything goes to absolute hell. I'm thinking Pierson ends up shot and gets carted off by Turner and wakes up in a field hospital. New gunshot wound that's already cleaned and stitched up, probably a fractured bone or two from the force of the shot. Takes a few seconds for the memories to hit him again.

Most of the camp won't look at him and the handful that do(mostly medics/nurses/doctors) are a little haunted behind the eyes. He think's its all related to the ambush and failure in the Pass at first, figures the medical teams are just being run ragged trying to clean up after the attacks. Most of his wife's gear is still piled up on a desk which didn't ring any alarms since he always ended up tossed in whichever ward she was working because she was the only one who could deal with him.

The fact something is really wrong doesn't really hit him until Turner walks in. He didn't expect a warm reception, he remembered arguing in the Pass about whether they fell back or waited for reinforcements. But Turner didn't look disappointed - he looked haunted. The kind of haggard look you get when you're trying to keep it together but struggle to. Turner wouldn't even need to open his mouth before Pierson was already jumping to the same conclusion.

He'd notice that the gear piled up on the desk had a layer of dust on it, that the other nurses hadn't just been exhausted they'd looked devastated. That the one or two that had approached him hadn't been able to meet his eye and had hurried off after checking vitals. That the papers stacked on the chair next to his bed were mission reports and not patient files or sketch pages. All the little things that should've been there that weren't would start to add up.

Turner would struggle to find the words, because how would you tell your best friend that his wife of 14 years was presumed dead. That by the time they'd regrouped, the teams that had been trapped in the Pass were either captured or killed.

Pierson would ask the question anyway, knowing the answer but risking the hope that he was wrong. Knowing that Turner wouldn't hesitate the same way if it was just about the ambush. There was only one thing that Turner wouldn't know how to approach and only one reason why they'd be alone in an empty ward. He didn't need to see what Turner was holding to confirm what he already knew - he'd recognize the sound of rings scraping against dog tags anywhere.

Pierson would know - and they'd both know that he knew.

But Turner would drop into the chair next to him anyway, haunted apologies offered as he handed the battered sketchbook over. Pages crinkled and water stained with a chain wrapped through the middle of the book. Two silver tags and two gold rings tucked between the pages - freshly cleaned though he wouldn't risk thinking about what had prompted someone to clean them.

there will never be anything as funny as the mutual disbelief between long form and short form fic writers about each other's style.

short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.

meanwhile long form writers look at people writing 1000 word one shots like god I would cut off my left nipple to be able to say anything concisely. i would love to play with multiple ideas. free me from the shackles of this child I have birthed. i love them but I now must take them to t-ball and doctor's appointments and they're going to destroy everything I own.
