An unwanted stalker

Anyway, this guy has decided he’s my friend and so he’s always following me around (and the fishy smell follows him). I’ll be working and he’ll want to pull me aside and have a chat, like I don’t need to get a good performance review and maybe get a promotion some day. All the time, no matter what I’m doing, Eric’s tugging at my sleeve and asking for a minute of my time. And it never is just a minute, and it’s never anything important – he just wants to talk random shite and feel like someone’s his friend.

Work work work

Sometimes it’s not just the customers at work who make life unbearable. And in all this all I can think of is the paint jobs and wall papers that need to be fixed at home. There’s one guy at work who just smells like fish. We have no idea why, we’ve never seen him eating fish, but wherever he goes, that fishy smell follows. And someone told me that fish doesn’t actually smell when it’s fresh, and the reek just happens when fish has already started to go off. (Honestly, that put me off eating fish ever. It always smells a little bit, and when you think that means it’s already rotting… no, thank you, I’ll stick to something safer.)

No intelligent discourse doesn’t work that way

It’s beyond belief that people don’t realise they’re being played when it comes to situations like that. But it’s also beyond belief that it’s just allowed to happen. What’s happened to actually having a reputable news source? They always had a write-in section, and sometimes people could be pretty heated about that, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of total rubbish like people were spouting in the comments sections. It’s like everyone spontaneously turned into a parody of themselves the minute they started typing. I R TORY/REPUBLICAN/AN ASSHOLE, HEAR ME ROAR.

Here is another thing for New York Times readers to feel smug about: According to a study, the comments on the newspaper’s website are the smartest among six top news sites. Tim Libert, a web developer for NYU’s journalism department, recently surveyed the comment sections on the Times, CNN, MSNBC, Wired, ZDNet and the UK’s The Register, and found that the conversations on the Times were just plain smarter.

Libert initially conducted the research to learn what people thought of the hacking group LulzSec, but while doing that he noticed patterns in the way people commented on the sites. Times readers’ comments were “thoughtful and nuanced,” while CNN comments had “a significant amount of name-calling, off-topic comments and what I suspect were fake accounts,” wrote Libert. MSNBC comments weren’t much better than CNN’s, as they tended to feature “long-winded personal attacks.”

There you have it. More completely scientific and undeniable proof that people who read the New York Times are smarter than everyone else. If any non-Times readers dispute this, they’re probably just jealous.

Lol wow. So things haven’t changed much. 

I was reading the news online today and I got down to the comments section. I normally read the news in one of the free papers on public transport, or just browse through the headlines on my phone, but for some reason today someone linked me to a full article and I ended up in the comments section and…

It’s a CESSPOOL. People are crazy and they’ll say anything on the internet, to anybody. There was someone who kept swearing he was Donald Trump, which I wouldn’t put past Trump to do except that the comments actually sounded way too intelligent for that. There was someone who just kept posting “LOL” to everything, even when it wasn’t remotely funny. And there was one guy trolling on purpose, just replying to everyone’s posts with the exact opposite of what they were saying and trying to get a rise out of them.

Lesson of the day

In fact, right now I can’t think of a positive customer story, from the casino or anywhere else. 

Stick to online gambling, is my recommendation. Then you don’t meet people.

So you now know (at least I hope you do) that not that anyone wants the job of cleaning up, either. And somehow they avoided getting caught on our CCTV properly, they just look really blurry and indistinct, so we can’t even kick them out or anything like that. Hopefully the boss will think of something, because the mess in there, and the smell… well, you’d have to see and smell it to believe it, and I don’t think I’d wish that on my worst enemy.

You really have to stop and think sometimes you want to go up to each and every one of those stupid customers and

Holy shit great balls of fire

Like customers everywhere, they do shitty things. Sometimes literally. You wouldn’t believe the mess we had to deal with in the bathrooms today – and people were complaining to me and the managers, going on and on about how people are animals. Well yeah, and what do you expect us to do about it?! We can’t supervise everyone who goes to use the toilets. That’d be weird and pervy, and who would even want that job?

Okay

I can’t really talk much about work, because I’ve checked and I’m pretty sure now that I’m not allowed to talk about it on social media. It specifically says not on twitter or facebook, anyway, and I guess a blog is kind of like those except no one reads it? (Wait, does anyone actually read twitter or facebook? I guess I might need to redefine some terms.) Still, I work at a casino, and I have a pretty important job running things, so I get face to face with customers a lot.

Anyway, what about me? I’m thirty-three, and I have a stupid bald spot starting at the back of my head. I’ve tried all of the online tricks about it, and not one of them has done any good at all, so I think I might have to resort to the Homer Simpson look one of these days. For now, you can’t really tell, and it does help sometimes to make me look a little bit older. You need that sometimes when you’re dealing with people, because if they think you’re young, they also think you’re inexperienced and try to walk all over you. You’re put at a disadvantage right away.

I’ve never really kept a blog, but some of my friends are doing it, so I’m having a go. My name is Gareth, and I’d better not tell you where I work or anything like that, because I don’t think I’m even meant to talk about it online. Suffice it to say that I deal with customers or clients or punters or whatever you want to call them all the time, and I’m sick to the back teeth of the stunts they try and pull.
