A Vast Archive Chronicling a 25-Year Journey
Sado: "Originally, there was a major project planned to mark the milestone of their 20th anniversary, and filming began around the time of their Coachella performance in 2019. However, the COVID-19 pandemic made production difficult, so we later decided to create a documentary for their 25th anniversary instead. We were filming without knowing they had decided to go into 'cold sleep,' so I was genuinely surprised when that scene unfolded.
The total volume of footage—including archival material—reached 50 terabytes. Live rehearsals alone generate a massive amount of data, as we shoot in 4K using three or four cameras simultaneously. It was difficult to source live performance and interview footage from before their big break, so we utilized VHS and MiniDV tapes held by their agency and the members' families. Finding decks capable of playing these formats was a challenge; we borrowed units from private owners to get the job done, though there were still many tapes that simply wouldn't play."
