ây/n?â you hear. You shake your head thinking it was a dream until you are shaken awake. Slowly you open your eyes in fear, turning to look at the person beside you, your fear shrinking when you see Player 149 âSorry to disturb you so lateâŠbut can I talk to youâ you nod your head.
âOf course,â you move up so she can sit on your bed, and as she does she takes your hand.
âI heard you crying again sweetheartâŠare you blaming yourself? That Young-il didnât make it back?â you take it a short breath and nod your head. She sighs lightly. âNo matter how you look at itâŠlife is unfairâŠit is cruel and will take anything It wants at willâ tears start to well in your eyes again. âBad people do bad things and go on to live great livesâŠpeaceful livesâŠgood people on the other hand beat themselves up over small thingsâ
âYoung-Ils death wasnât a small thingâ you whisper, anger bubbling inside of you as you snatch your hand away from her grasp.
âOf course not, nor will it ever beâŠit also wasnât your faultâ the tears start to fall, and she shoots you a sympathetic smile. âYong-sik was a good person, a good child at leastâŠnever went against the rulesâŠnever once said no when he didnât like the food on his plateâ she lets out a sad laugh at the memories. âThen he grew upâŠand although he got into some bad situations, he always did what he thought was rightâŠalways with a good heartâŠbut he always blamed himself, for eery little thing he blamed himselfâ gently place your hand over hers as tears begin to fall down her face.
âIâm sorry about your son Geum Jaâ you whisper. Gently she nods, closing her eyes and smiling gently.
âI stood right there and killed himâŠ.my only son and I ended his lifeâ She starts to sob gently. Carefully you stroke her hand hoping to be some sort of comfort and after a little while she calms down and turns to face you.
âY/nâŠJunhee and her little girl, they need someone to help them, someone like youâŠGi-hun is too busy trying to save everyone else he has no time to save a baby and her motherâ you take a deep breath slowly shaking your head. She reaches forward and grabs both of your hands. âY/nâŠIâve seen how close you and JunHee have becomeâŠhow good of friends you are with one anotherâŠ.â You look down unable to answer âLook, I donât know how I ended up here at this old age, did I live the wrong life? Or just because those folks upstairs wanted it like this I couldnât tell youâŠ.all Iâm trying to tell you is that child is completely innocent in all of this, its certainly not her fault she was born in this hellholeâŠy/n pleaseâŠ..iâm begging youâŠJunHee needs you, her baby needs you to surviveâŠplease y/n⊠save JunheeâŠsave her child?â Her tears drip onto your hand and you look up, youâre met with her eyes begging you to help, and so you nod your head slowly. âPromise me y/n, promise me youâll help them survive?â taking a deep breath, you reply.
âI promiseâ you whisper. Sobbing in relief Geum Ja pulls you into a hug, you wrap your arms around her returning it.
âThank youâ she whispers in your ear. Pulling away she stands, leaning down to press a caring kiss to your forehead and sends you one last smile before walking away back to her bunk. Thoughts race through your mind, how would you take care of Junhee and her baby when you could barely keep yourself alive?
Soon enough morning came and all players are abruptly awoken by the sound of the doors bursting open and guards marching in. Confused, you slowly sit up rubbing your eyes, realisation dawning as you notice a coffin carried through the dorms. As your eyes follow the guards, a sinking feeling dwells in the pit of your stomach. Gasps and small cries fill the air as the guards reach their destination. Looking up tears begin to well in your eyes. Player 149 was deadâŠhung herself from her bunk. You watch as the guards take down her lifeless body, laying it in the coffin.
âOh Geum Jaâ you whisper mournfully, an empty feeling now replacing the sinking one.
âDear players, it is time for the fifth game, please follow instructions and make your way to the games hall, I will now repeat the instructionsâ Pink guards pile into the room ready to lead you all towards the game hall, but you make no effort to move. Until you saw Jun-Hee and her baby walking towards the door with a limp. Not a minute earlier you watched as she placed her baby down ready to leave without it but then swiftly changed her mind.
âPromise me y/nâŠpromise me youâll look after Jun-Hee and her baby?â Geum Jas voice echoed in your head as you watch Junhee inch closer to the door, struggling to keep both herself and her baby upright. You leap out of your bed, rushing over to them.
âJun-Hee, let me take the baby?â She looks up at you confused. âPlease? I used to take care of my little sister all the time, let me take care of her just for this game so you can focus on taking care of yourself?â Â Hesitantly she nods, handing you her baby girl, balancing herself on the wall. You both walk towards the game hall, Jun-Hee of course struggling because of her ankle but you made it nonetheless. Walking through the doors causes your heart to jump into your chest. Jump rope. How is Jun-Hee going to get across? Turning to look at Jun-Hee you notice panic evident on her face, no matter how hard she tries to hide it.
âHey, weâll find a way to cross together okay?â
âWelcome to the fifth game, the game you will be playing today is jump rope. Each player must make their way across the bridge whilst jumping over the rope as it swings; to pass you must reach the other side within 20 minutes.â
Small gasps and quiet prayers fill the atmosphere as each player takes in what they must do.
âThe order in which you cross the bridge within the time limit is entirely up to youâ You turn to Jun-Hee, fear and defeat evident in her face.
âCome, sit for a minuteâ you lead her to a bench so she can rest her ankle. It was evident to you and everyone else that she couldnât do this alone.
âAnd now, let the game beginâ Dread fills your body as the rope begins to swing, and music fills the air. You watch silently as players try and gauge the speed of the rope, practising their jumps over it as it swings around.
âWeâll go together, Ill hep you crossâ she looks up at you, confusion and guilt in her eyes.
âWhat about her?â she questions looking worriedly at the baby in your arms.
âThe game will be over in 20 minutes, leave the baby here until then and Iâll come back for her afterwards.â She looks up at you hopeful, until a pink guard approaches you.
âIn order to continue, all players must make it across the bridge within the time limit, any player who fails to do so within the allotted tie will be eliminatedâ your heart sinks.
âBut she isnât a player, sheâs not like the rest of usâ you argue.
âEach and everyone of you is a player, there are no exceptionsâ you stand face to fae with the guard.
âAre you kidding me? That baby is innocent, she has absolutely nothing to do with this, with any of this!?â Beside you, a guard points their gun towards you, with the guard in front of you pointing their gun towards the baby.
âAny player who fails to cross the bridge within the time limit will be eliminatedâ 3 minutes had now passed with nobody braving the bridge.
âWe canât be wasting time like thisâ player 100 shouts up. âWe need someone to step up and go firstâ
âThen why donât you?â you shout back. He turns to you, hatred in his eye but says nothing before the other players begin to argue amongst themselves.
âY\n?â you hear from beside you; you turn to look at Jun-Hee. âWill you take her across with you when you goâŠplease y/n?â
âWhat about you Jun-Hee? Iâm not leaving you hereâ
âI would risk my life a hundred times to save her, please y/n, take her with you?â silently you nod, accepting that this is the only way to save the child.
âIâll come back for you Jun-Hee, I promiseâ
âPlease Min-su please im sorry, im sorry for everything min-su please!!â a commotion arises beside you catching your attention. Min-su and Nam-gyu seem to be in an argument. Suddenly Min-su rushes over to the edge of the bridge and throws something into the centre, something clearly of value.
âIf you want it so bad, go and get itâ he spits at Nam-gyu.
âYou fuckerâ Nam-gyu roughly grabs his collar before pushing him away, clearly at war with himself, does he get it or does he leave it for someone else?
He takes the first leap, and he second, your heart jumping with him. It seems that the closer he gets to the centre the harder it gets. He reaches the middle, his legs shaking as he stands, necklace in his handsâŠbut it was too late. The rope comes around quicker than expected, hitting his ankles and throwing him over the edge. You hear his body land and a sickness washes over you, yet you muster up the courage to face the group.
âExcuse meâ you speak, they all turn to look at you as you walk through them, baby wrapped tightly around you. Standing face to face with the rope makes your blood run cold, but the tiny human in your arms makes everything worth the danger. Taking a deep breath, you jump onto the bridge, your heart jumping into your throat, then another and another your balance almost wavering as you reach the gap in the bridge, it was far bigger than it looked but you couldnât go back. You begin to lose hope, the rope keeps swinging and the more your jump exhaustion creeps into your legs, and you think of what to do.
âYour heart is far too big for this world, far too special for a place like this, yet I see a woman who has gone through hell to get where she is, a woman of resilience, courage and a strength many men here do not possess, but what drives you mostâŠis the love you have for others, donât let anybody tell you what youâre not capable of because you can do far more than you knowâŠfar more than they knowâ  Young-Ils voice fills your head, it was one of the final conversations you had with him and all you could do was doubt yourself. Yet in this moment, standing on the bridge your heart swells with love, griefâŠdetermination. Determination to not let this innocent life suffer. So, as you take a dee breath you take the leap, just landing on the other side. Soon enough you reach the other side and fall to your knees in relief, clutching the baby tight. Slowly you stand, turning to face Jun-Hee.
âIâll be right there I promiseâ you shout before placing the baby down softly on a flower patch to the side. As you turn back to the bridge you notice the rest of the players now crossing. Your heart once again stalls as you look at the time, 12 minutes left. You watch intently as more players cross, and the number of fallen players rise, multiple at the vicious hands of player 96 as he pushes them from the ledge despite your plea to reason with him.
âYou should move nowâ you speak as you walk up behind him.
âAre you shitting me? Donât you get it? This way we get the money all to ourselvesâ
âWhat if I decide to push you from behind?â you whisper, your courage growing. âThen I wouldnât have to split the prizeâ He stares at you silently, his eyes darting around but saying nothing. âmoveâ you speak. As he moves to the side you step forward noticing the speed of the rope increasing.
âItâs starting to spin faster, come on!â you shout to the players on the bridge, and as they each make their way across the bridge and ono the ledge you watch on the other side as Jun-Hee helplessly attempts her jumps in preparation for the bridge, but each tie she fails.
Suddenly from behind you player 96 charges at you, yet before he reaches you Gi-Hun rushes at him from beside you. You watch in horror as they fall backwards onto the bridge, boh almost falling. They continue to struggle and fight but you stood their frozen in fear, that couldâve been you instead of Gi-Hun. Suddenly player 096 yells as Gi-Hun pushes him off the bridge. A sigh of relief escapes your lips as Gi-Hun jumps back p ushering the rest of the players across.
âThank youâ you whisper. He looks over at you, concern and a softness in his eyes. Gently he nods and returns his attention back to the remaining players. As each player crosses your adrenaline rises, you have to get back to Jun-Hee. Soon enough she is the last player to step foot onto the bridge. You look up at the timer, 1:06 left, and as you look towards Jun-Hee you notice her standing on the edge of the ledge and your heart drops.
âJun-Hee, Jun-Hee stay there Iâll come to yoâ you shout to her as you prepare to cross.
âY/n noâ your blood goes cold as you look up at her. âYou canât come back nowâ. You watch helplessly as she inches closer to the edge.
âJun-Hee no Jun-Hee donât! Iâll make it there, Iâll bring you across youâll make it through Jun-Hee I promiseâ you shout, tears welling up in your eyes.
âPlease, just stay there, if you donât survive my baby will die tooâŠthe most important thing is to save my little girlâŠthatâs what Iâm trying to do right nowâ she cries as you shake your head in both disagreement and disbelief âPlease watch over herâ
âJun-heeâ you cry, tears freely flowing as she inches closer to the edge, her toes now over it. As you go to jump onto the bridge Gi-Hun pulls you back.
âY/n no, its too lateâ you roughly push him away and run towards the bridge once more, but just as you do Jun-Hee steps over the edge, falling to her death.
âJUN-HEE!â you shout falling to your knees. Behind you Gi-Hun comes up, gently placing his hand on your back to comfort you.
âPlayer 222 eliminatedâ a pained cry escapes you. âThe game is now over; all remaining players please return to the dormitory.â
ây/n come on, youâre all this child has nowâ lifting your head you look towards Jun-Hees baby girl, dread setting in. As you rise to your feet you notice the other players around you giving you disapproving looks, but you didnât care. All you cared for now was the baby you had taken into your arms.
