“I am not a girl. And I am much more to Rudolf than that, I can assure you.” Her tone grew bitter and hard at the woman. “He loves me. Only me. He may love you because you are the mother of his daughter but he truly loves me.”

“And that is why you are a girl, you are too naive.” Stephanie almost laughed. “Explain Mizzi then. The woman he has loved for so long, that he took a disease from her, and gave it to me. Mizzi is his love, where you.. are his second choice.” It was harsh, the Princess knew it. She had had to live with it for years now, surely Mary was not this daft?

She takes a moment, collecting her thoughts, before letting out a sigh. “It was not always like this. We were close once, before Erszi was born, and then..” She pauses, shaking her head. “I stay, because I care about him. I understand him, even if I do not always agree. I have stayed at his side so long, that I would not dare leave him to suffer this court without me. He helped me when I came here, and I would not see it ruin him while I can try to help him. While I have the power to do so. I am his wife, and that means many things. For now? It means I am the woman he can trust with everything in this court, the people.. you are the girl that.. he is infatuated with. You can be trusted to distract him from it all, just like how the one he ... loves did the same for a time.”

“I am no child.” She was sudden in her speaking but quickly regained control over her tone. Mary pressed her lips together in a tight line before she spoke in reply. “These are not fantasies or games to me, Your Highness. This is true.” She glanced to the side to ensure they were not overheard. “Your daughter could still be legitimate. I do not intend to take that from her in any way.”

Eyebrows raised slightly at the tone the younger took with her, yet she regained her cool quickly. “Yet, you would see yourself married to Rudolf? The Emperor forbade our annulment. The Empress hardly approves of me, let alone any woman Rudolf takes to his bed. And of me? You’d see me married to another man, whom I could not bear children for? Because of Rudolf? I feel as if you mock me.” It was not as if she had not considered it..but this was her life. To be the companion of Rudolf, even be his friend if God allowed it, regardless of their personal issues as husband and wife.

Who was she to demand such an action from her? Mary wet her lips as she listened to the Crown Princess speak. She kept her hands in front of her and then turned to face the other woman. “Your Highness–” But she did not know how to respond to such a sentence. “–if you and he are so unhappy, why do you not simply separate? I do not ask for my own sake but rather yours.” And, more importantly, Rudolf’s.

She lets out a scoff, without meaning to. “You truly are naive, child. It is for my daughter’s sake that we do not. For my own sake as well, considering Rudolf ruined me.” It is his own fault, that they were not able to conceive another. Taking the disease of one of his whores, and infecting Stephanie’s womb. “I am not so young anymore that fantasies take my mind. There is more to this world than you may think, Baroness. Politics is a different game to love.” They might not be in love, but... He’d been her husband for so long, that she did truly care for him.

The question was exactly what had been on his mind these last days, leaving him no rest. Rudolf had to make a decision and this would set the course for all their lives. And that after he had stopped seeing any future at all. But now here he stood, breathing out and escaping his wife’s gaze.

“No, Stephanie! I won’t!” It had needed some time, but he spoke with all the convincement he could summon. Seeing Stephanie like that, on the verge of tears and the thought of Erzsi had left him no other choice, even though there’d certainly be easier ways. “I will leave neither you nor Erzsi alone like that. She’s my heir, no matter what happens. And you are her mother.”

Instinctively the Crown Prince stepped closer, but eventually didn’t dare to touch her. Hadn’t he vowed to himself not to cause her any more pain? And yet here they were again, finding themselves in the most difficult situation. 

She is not sure whether the answer lets her tears fall, or the conviction behind the words. Yet they do. Her tears fall, and she wipes at them trying to keep them from falling to far onto her cheeks. She yearns for the comfort, any comfort, and lets herself reach out a hand to Rudolf as he steps closer. 

“I had fear. For Erzsi’s sake, and my own. I am no use as another man’s wife, and Erzsi.. this is all she knows, what she is to be raised for... But Rudolf, you must take care of the little baroness and your child with her. It is only right. I will take the shame and humiliation of it. The child is an innocent in this, and deserves to be recognised. You will do it, yes?”

The baroness managed a tight smile when the Princess pointed and gave a nod. She was more than surprised at the offer and she had to accept. “Of course, Your Highness. I would be more than honored.” Mary nodded once more and began walking with the older woman. She could feel her heart surging out of her chest from the anxiety.

She lead the way, making sure to take steps that would not leave them followed, until they were outside. It was then, she let her thoughts out. 

“I know you hate me. By all accounts I should hate you too, and yet, I am merely jealous and upset, but I cannot bring myself to hate you. Although... I understand our odds and differences, I would still very much like to be your friend Mary.” Stephanie did not want to hate the girl for something neither of them could control. Rudolf was a man that did as he pleased, whether it was sex or love. And Stephanie had to live with it. “I do not want to hate you, I cannot bring myself to do it. I should. But I cannot. I only ask that you and Rudolf be discreet. I have been humiliated enough over my marriage.” It was only Stephanie’s business what her husband did when he contracted diseases, and gave them to her. In the same regard, she had some hope of compassion that would keep herself from being humiliated again.

For all her talk, Mary was quiet as she stood in front of the Crown Princess. Her eyes lifted when she was addressed and she gave a simple nod. Though she was dressed elegantly, Mary could not help but feel like a mere shimmer next to Stephanie’s star in the current moment. For it was now she was reminded who held all the power in regards to Rudolf. And she hated the other for it.

“Yes, your Highness, I am. It is a lovely evening. I trust you are well, too?” Mary asked with all the politeness she could muster.

The smile she’d greeted Mary with, almost felt forced now that the other was engaging in conversation with her. Yet, she tried her best not to let it show. Mary was a young woman, Stephanie reminded herself, she would learn the world soon enough. Just as Stephanie herself had. 

“I am as well as I could be. It’d be much better if some people did not try to speak to me. You see the man over there?” Stephanie pointed discreetly to an elder gentleman, with blond hair, ragged and engaged in conversation with a young lady. “Boring and smells.” She stated. If the conversation could be kept from Rudolf, both would be fine.... and yet.. “Mary, would you take a walk with me?”

For a moment, Stephanie isn’t quite sure what to do. She’s only been forced to see the girl from afar, and even then, not for very long. However.. Somewhere in Stephanie’s mind, the thought that it is not her fault, moves through, and instead of causing a scene, she gives the girl a small smile

Nodding her head, she greets the girl. “Mary Vetsera, Rudolf has spoken of you little, but I see he did not lie.” She does not mean in cruelly, though perhaps her words could be taken as such. Mary is still only young.. Stephanie remembers her time as a young woman, under the eyes of so many. She wants to be cruel, she wants to be harsh with her, but... she wonders of how a woman would treat Erzsi, if she were in Mary’s position, or how a wife would treat Stephanie herself for being in Mary’s position. A young girl infatuated with a man, who at times only thinks with his second head. 

“I do hope, that you are having a good evening?” Any malice she tries to throw at the girl, will not pass her lips. She cannot do it to the girl.

She’d considered it. That was perhaps the sad thing about it all, she had considered it, but not done it. She looked up from where she sat, taking Rudolf in with her eyes, and letting out a breath. “No one would... But I still cannot bring myself to do it. Erzsi is too young to understand. She would probably never forgive me.” Their daughter loved her father perhaps too much, and wiping a tear away from her eye, Steph tried not to cry. 

“I wish it was different, Rudolf. You are a man, I expect these things but... Unable to have another myself? And the little baroness... It hurts more than any other circumstance of it.” She wants to be honest, she wants to move past this no matter how much her heart screams at her not to. She must think of Erzsi and reconciling. 

“If Mary has a son... will you put me and Erzsi aside for her and the boy?” It almost comes as a whisper, for she is terrified of the answer. She would be in disgrace, and what use would she be as another man’s wife unable to bear him any children?
