The If You Could exhibition aimed to provide a platform for the finest creatives from all over the world to question their conventional working methods and outcomes. The contributors were challenged to produce something a little unexpected, by working with a partner of their choosing from any discipline, profession or background. Check out the results on the flickr page.
Hannah Clements of UAL Careers & Enterprise gives tips on good things to remember when networking.
Further advice from Hannah is to remember that you already have a network - your peers, people you work with - so you are already networking, as long as you keep talking to people and letting them know what you do. This doesn't have to be at formal networking events. There are always opportunities around you to meet new people, share ideas and contacts.
Bracket help creative people develop their businesses through collaboration.
Writer/illustrator/freelancer/tweetmaster Greg Stekelman gives his advice.
"Collaborate. You may be a nerd used to writing/illustrating/coding in your bedroom. Fine, but don’t be a control freak. Because most projects require some collaboration. If you can’t share your creations, they will most likely remain stillborn."
Advice on the UAL Creative Living website about building your networks.
Joe Coppard and Jimmy Merris, who met whilst studying at LCC, discuss their project This is Why We Meet and collaborative working practice in the arts.
"There is a difference, however, between participation (you create a situation/have a proposition and invite people to take part in it), and collaboration (something that emerges together from a group of people, always built together)"
An expert view on collaboration by Bec Andrews, a set and costume designer:
Every collaboration is:
- Different. Certain ways of collaboration work better, but every time it's different
- Personal and professional. Professional but nature of the work focuses on personal stuff, you can become friends with the people you work with as you are working away from home for weeks at a time.
- Finite – as you get to a point where you've done as much as you can together
- A process of negotiation and compromise – always give and take.
An ECCA blog post on why to collaborate, who to collaborate with, and some handy tips:
- Have a common vision - Have clear and realistic expectations of yourself and others - Communicate your ideas and expectations clearly - Don't be afraid of having big ideas – you can achieve more when you collaborate with others! - Be friends with others who possess different skill-sets
