CREA+ION ZINE - an introduction

- What is crea+ion?

crea+ion is a digital, non-profit zine that explores the many intersections between art and the forces that shape our lives — politics, identity, grief, joy, memory, and more. Each issue focuses on a single theme, and we publish essays, poetry, fiction, visual art, comics, and experimental works from creators of all backgrounds.

- What can I submit?

Writing:

Personal essays (max ~1200 words)

Poetry (up to 3 poems)

Short stories or experimental prose (max ~1500 words)

Letters, manifestos, testimonies (max ~1200 words)

Visual Work:

Digital/traditional art

Photography

Collage, scanned sketchbooks

Comics or illustrated poems

Mixed media or experimental works

- Editorial details

This zine will be free for all to access. All contributors retain rights to their work. We may suggest light edits, but you’ll always be consulted first. We value your voice, especially if you're from a community directly affected by war, colonization, or resistance.

- Donation info

The standard zine is free to access and download. Those readers who choose to donate to the PCRF and share proof of donation will be rewarded with an extended version of the zine. Any amount of money will be considered and rewarded as such.

It's crea+ion zine again, announcing a new call for art for our second issue of our zine! This issue's theme, by contributor vote, will be Art&Rage, and submissions are now open for everyone.

Here's a quick reminder of all the art we accept:

Writing:

Personal essays (max ~1200 words)

Poetry (up to 3 poems)

Short stories or experimental prose (max ~1500 words)

Letters, manifestos, testimonies (max ~1200 words)

Visual Work:

Digital/traditional art

Photography

Collage, scanned sketchbooks

Mixed media or experimental works

Remember, all of this on the theme of our second issue: Art&Rage.

What comes to your mind when you think of rage?

What enrages you the most?

How can you handle rage with art?

What happens when art is tinted with rage?

How does the rage of others affect you?

You can explore questions like these in our zine, or interpret the theme in any other way you like.

We accept works previously published on social media as long as they weren't made for another zine or publication that forbids reposting. You will retain full rights to your work, and will be free to use it however you please once the zine in published.

Remember, with this free non-profit zine we encourage people to donate to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Information about this and other topics can be found in this comprehensive overview document.

We are proud to announce that our first issue, Art&War, is currently out and available to download in Gumroad! Remember that this is completelty free and that we, for the time being, do NOT accept donations.

However, if you would like an extended version of the zine, send us a DM with a proof of donation to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund and we will send it as soon as possible!

Do you guys have a website?

Not yet. We're an up and coming zine and don't have yet any issues released. We do have a discord server for all editors and contributors to join. There, once everyone has joined, we will vote which kind of online presence we intent to have. All next issues will be published there.

I can't find any presence of your zine online anywhere. This is the first post on your blog here, and the only link you provide is the Google Form to post submissions with a deadline of 2 days from the time you posted.

I'm sorry, but the way you did this feels scammy. I don't want to assume the worst, but a lot of these are red flags. I do appreciate that you include "All contributors retain rights to their work" in your Editorial Details, but could you provide us with anything that proves your legitimacy?

Hi! We're an emerging zine and this is our first issue. The deadline was lengthened recently and perhaps some of our promotional material wasn't updated accordingly. We have promoted this zine on Discord and Reddit too. We do not seek any type of financial compensation for this, as we state in our info document https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NS0Q_-cGN3xBWQIb7fdpXKOX00hYArU-1ZedJOFm4uw/edit?usp=drive_link . We are currently working with 4 editors and haven't yet added any contributors to our discord channel.

I appreciate the concerns for the safety of artists. It's a cruel industry and some people don't have your best interest in mind. This isn't a large organisation or anything of the sorts, we are just simply trying to get people to express themselves and bring awareness to the current political climate. We seek to fundraise to the PCRF, but the zine itself is free and there is no contributor fee. Those readers who choose to donate to the PCRF will be rewarded with an extended version of the zine. We will discuss the specifics of the campaign in due time as to do so as ethically and efficiently as possible.
