How Hollywood dominated the western world
started building large studios. Sound came about in movies. Sound cinema depends on language. English became the primary language in films, and so non-English speaking place lost business.
The Hollywood studio model was v efficient. The producer controls everything while actors/employees follow orders. Highly ctrlâd, re-used sets. Always get financial backing as people in NY are on wall street/get donations
markets during both world wars: EU didnât sell to USA, USA did to EU. After the war, they exported films to people who had no/lost their film industry
Hollywood = adaptable. Aware of rival companies, hired people from there. âPoachedâ/had means of knowing what people wanted
System = flexible, If something didnât work, they adapted methods.
50s - TV became competition to cinema/Hollywood.
filmmakers began co-producing for TV - showed films for a price.
Successful studios move w/ times; technical developments, production methods, co-production w/ tv.
Successful people w/i film âbreak offâ, make own films.
EU saw film = art. Analysed Hollywood Films; took seriously; had certain nichĂ© in EU. Directors = âauthorsâ
New Hollywood - classics pass; next generation directions emerge.
Vertical integration collapsed; developed greater freedom.
