Bear being named that is not a coincidence and I think has 2 potential readings:

1. It’s a reference to the viral man or bear question, a hypothetical question to women asking them if they would rather be alone in the woods with a bear or a man. Most women chose the bear due to factors like rate of male violence and domestic abuse. Contrast this with the film, Nikki felt safe and comfortable around Bear when she viewed as him as just a friend and "little brother" and how that trust was very quickly betrayed by someone she thought was a friend and who she had felt safe to be with.

2. It’s a reference to bears in nature. Bears are often portrayed in cartoons and media as being cute, friendly, and cuddly and from a far they look like big teddy bears when in reality, they’re one of the most dangerous and vicious predators in nature. In the film, Bear comes off as just a shy, timid, nice guy, but underneath that soft exterior is a layer of insecurity, a need for desire, and a need to feel like he’s in control. Bear is a predator presenting himself as another nice guy.
