Turn Week 2021 | Day 7: Favourite AU

Instead of dying at the hands of Abraham, Baker gets taken as a (not so moderately injured) POW. Traded back a year later, he ends up in York City, where he meets a the enigmatic Robert Townsend, one of the few people to not ask him about everything he went through. 

(past baker living, this au is surprisingly canon compliant.)

Thought I’d give myself a break from gifmaking for this prompt, partially because I have so many Tallster-themed gifs already and also because day seven’s prompt is going to be. a little more involved. 👀 Loved the idea of dropping fic recommendations for your favorite relationship, so I thought I’d go all out and gather a bunch of my favorites! Turn Week 2021

Day 5 - Favourite Patriot + ficlet (Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her)

“Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her… Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her… The voyage is done and the winds don’t blow and it’s time for us to leave her…”

“What’s that, lieutenant?”

Caleb glances up, away from the tall, helmeted figure talking amidst the other officers in the distance. “Hmm?”

“You were singing, sir.” An ensign is speaking to him. Damn, he should know the man’s name. Hodgkin? His head has been elsewhere lately. At times it felt like the war would never end. Now, at its unravelling, it feels all those years are being compressed into just a few days. He’s pretty sure it’s Hodgkin.

“It’s a seaman’s song,” he says, returning to his watch. “It’s about things ending. We sing it on a ship’s last voyage.”

“It’s lovely, sir,” the ensign ventures, a little timidly. Perhaps it’s too soon for lovely things again. Caleb snorts.

“It’s about how the pay’s shite and you’re glad to see the last of it,” he says.

The ensign falls quiet.

The parade is dispersing now. It was fun, at first. Sitting high above all the folk who were cheering and gawking, feeling like a proper hero for once, relieved and sore and alive. Now, the square feels restless, soldiers milling with civilians, bounties ending and futures spinning out like cartwheels pinging free from their mounts. Caleb can feel the listlessness, can see it in the enlisted men.

None of it in Ben, of course, already chatting away amidst a crowd of well-dressed politicians. No doubt there.

“She would not wear and she would not stay…”

“What will you do, lieutenant?”

“Hmm?” It seems the ensign is determined to make conversation, if the unmoored look in his eye is anything to go by. Caleb sighs. “Dunno. Always come back to the water, me.” He waits. “And yourself?”

“An apprenticeship, sir. With any luck they’ll have me.”

“Good man,” Caleb says, vaguely.

“Would you teach me, sir? The song, sir,” the ensign adds, colouring a little.

“It’s a seaman’s song.  You planning to be a sailor?”

“Could be, sir.”

Caleb throws one last look toward Ben–deeply entrenched, shoulders relaxed, oblivious. Wouldn’t be needing Caleb any time soon. The thought churns a little. Decision made, Caleb swings an arm around the young man’s shoulders.

“Alright. Yeah, alright. Don’t look so happy, it costs an ale. Right now, listen. Oh, the times were hard and the wages low…”

But the ground is soft and the scent of pine is thick and heady. The susurrus of the wind draws his attention into a single thread, winding it through the trees. Rest, the air sings, and the warm sunlight pushes the last resistance out of Ben’s limbs. With a long sigh, he lays flat.

“I’ve loved you, you know.”

Ben starts, turning his head. Caleb’s face betrays nothing and for a long moment Ben is convinced he imagined it. Then Caleb opens one eye, squinting in the dappled sunlight.

“Did you hear me?”

“Yes, of course I did,” Ben says, nonplussed. He levers himself onto an elbow, staring at his friend. “Do you know what you said?”

“I said I’ve loved you,” Caleb repeats, closing his eye again.

Turn of the Seasons: Winter 2020-2021 Writing Prompts!

Hello Turn fandom!

After the success of the Turn of the Seasons: Fall 2020 Collection, we’ve decided to give it another go!

Much the same as last time, the collection will be open and unmoderated on AO3. Once we open it up and announce the tag name, you can submit any work you like until it closes. (There are a few other Holiday fic swaps and Holiday-themed events happening on Tumblr and Discord, so the long submission period is mostly to give content creators a buffer.)

It will be a multinational, multicultural, both secular and religious collection and entries are encouraged to reflect this!

Point of note: Tag your content accordingly, including things like alcohol/narcotics.

Here’s the idea:

Setauket ‘Beachy Christmas’ Festival is one of the biggest festivals of the year, when youth from all over Long Island and further gather for several days of rock, pop, world music and merry making. Ben, Caleb, Abe and Simcoe wouldn’t miss that boys’ time out together for the world.
