being a coxswain is hard
i know- coxswains don’t get blisters on their hands or scream in pain on the erg machines. they don’t have to physically push themselves to the limit.
but mentally, being a coxswain is insanely difficult and taxing. they take the blame for every. single. mistake. made. regardless if it was their “fault” or not. they get bitched about behind their back, and all they can do is pretend like they didn’t hear a word. they’re constantly worried about screwing up whether it be in practice or regattas. they have to please the coach while still being a fun person to be around. honestly, i’m a coxswain that doesn’t easily let go of things that happen on the water because i just feel this overwhelming guilt for a long LONG time. even if i couldn’t have done anything better or different, i always feel like it’s not enough. it’s incredibly stressful 24/7, but coxswains just act like everything’s okay since they’re the glue that keeps the team together.
so please, appreciate your coxswains. understand that a bad row is just a day and that they’re probably mentally going through the practice over and over again, beating themselves up for everything they could, or couldn’t, have done differently. and if it’s only the first week or so of the season, we promise that our coxing ability or style doesn’t determine who we are as people, and all we want is to gain some respect. coxswains really try, and we’re sorry if we mess up. please take this information to heart the next time you’re considering bashing a coxswain directly after a practice/regatta; your words and actions make a deeper dent than you might think.
say it louder for the rowers in the back
Coxswain thing
cold
When you randomly come across another person who rows
When your coxbox stops working
When kayakers are on our river
They are on our dock all the time 😑
god i love master’s rowing i’m so excited to do it again this summer. in ten years i’m predicting i meet my husband bc he will be the stroke seat of a mens 8 i cox and it will be a beautiful love story
he’ll have to look in my eyes for 2 hours a day my eyes are beautiful so how could anyone not fall in love with me. Foolproof plan.
“I don’t care if Beyoncè swims up and starts serenading you, you keep your head in the goddamn boat.”
— Coach (via rowingconfessions)
This whole putting each other down when we should be united as a team is getting real old.
1. Bow seat you are important, we need you for your technique yes, but you are also STRONG 2. Power house you all are amazing and you have good technique too, we all improve our technique
3. The rumor that 3 and 4 seat are unnecessary, completely false. Everyone adds to the boat.
4. Coxswains, you are athletes, you are important members of the team, don’t put your worth down.
5. Novices, you are the future of the program, you are important and you will improve. None of the recruits or veteran members became who they are over one season.
everyone i know agrees rowing is a cult
Even most rowers I know think rowing is a cult
Hypnotizing repeating motions, only one person knows what’s going on, and said person is the one in charge. Definitely a cult.
Being a rower is not glamorous;
Ripped up hands, being forced to ice bathe, constantly consuming all forms of food, early mornings and late nights.
Being a coxswain is not glamorous:
Stress during practice, fear of letting the boat and the team down, holding back tears of frustration when things go wrong and there is nothing that you can do but get blamed for it.
But being a rower or being a coxswain is more worth it than anyone could ever express.
Dear RegattaWear, Please send your vendors with extra small shirts Sincerely, Coxswains

When coach tries to correct your stroke and you continue to do the same thing and they say “better, good change”.
