Konstantin Simonov, tr. by Frances Cornford, from “Tears Cost Her Nothing Anyway,”
preposterousbutitworks asked: " well - i suppose i'll think of something, won't i? "
“ Feeling confident, are we now, Doctor? But of course, I expect nothing less of you. Still— ”
He maneuvered towards another segment of the control panel, casually pulling a lever here—flipping a switch there.
His features were bowed, momentarily concealing the subtle curve of amusement now present across his expression, and he spoke in an easy, seemingly cordial manner.
Taking care to appear nonchalant, unconcerned, however—he remained acutely aware of the other man’s presence, and his current position.
“ —I might advise that you exercise a little discretion. After all, such brash displays of arrogance have left you high and dry before—I should know. ”
He came to a pause, lifting his gaze—squinting pleasantly across the room’s interior, and with a certain air of familiarity. His mouth gave a cool, subtle twinge.
“ As they say—’pride goeth before the fall’, eh, my dear? ”
All the battles within me are burning.
Channing M (via de-morte)
preposterousbutitworks asked: " don't you just love intellectual henchmen, master? "
His eyebrows lifted visibly, and he blinked several times—monotone, neatly derisive—responding altogether without great enunciation. “ —oh yes, quite. A captive need not fear the curse of boredom in such riveting company. ”
The furrow of his brow creased a little more, coolly unimpressed—a touch irked, for that matter, and his mouth gave a faint, humorless twitch.
“ Although, one does worry that they might come to entertain ideas above their station, naturally. ”
He lowered his gaze, seemingly casual—inconsequential, pausing to adjust one of his gloves at the wrist—speaking in much the same manner as before.
“ Or, indeed—that they might simply begin to think beyond their own fundamental capacity. ”
One of his eyebrows quirked up a bit higher, and he sniffed—appearing dismissive—shifting his gaze towards the other man, and proceeding to linger there for a moment.
His expression curved, ever so slightly.
“ Such a practice does leave a troubling margin for error, wouldn’t you agree? ”
I am as cold as I have ever been.

preposterousbutitworks asked: " will you take those infernal gloves off? "
A vague puzzlement creased the furrow of his brow, and he paused, turning partially—blinking several times.
“ Infernal—? My dear fellow, I’m quite certain that I haven’t the slightest idea what you mean. ”
His mouth gave a subtle, moderately amused twinge, and he seemed a bit sincerely thrown by the request—though not especially troubled. If anything, it struck him as rather quaintly humorous.
He bowed his head for a moment, taking a few paces forward—speaking as he went.
“ Indeed, I fail to see why my own manner of attire should be of any concern to you—provided that I haven’t taken to enrobing myself with explosives, of course. ”
He came to a halt in front of the other man, and lifted his gaze once more—appearing very much as though he intended to do absolutely nothing else, however—he then proceeded to remove his gloves, one after another—and quite simply offered them up.
Maintaining eye contact all the while.
“ Would you care to examine them for dangerous materials—? ”
Each of us has his own rhythm of suffering.
Roland Barthes, from Mourning Diary (via wishbzne)
The time has come for you to share your secret with me.
preposterousbutitworks asked: " yes, and the monoids - you remember the monoids? "
“ Ah yes—indeed. Pompous as they were foolish, and most ungainly on their feet. Rather difficult to forget, I’m afraid. ”
He went silent for a moment—appearing to consider, the furrow of his brow quirking slightly upwards—reflecting on the given subject.
“ Of course, I do owe a little something to that particular trip—why, you might even say it remains a personal favorite of mine. ”
With these words, the curve of his expression gave a moderate twinge, twisting to form a subtle smile, and he settled back where he was seated, looking quite comfortable—tenting gloved fingers together.
“ Even in its original form, the miniaturization technology developed by their human counterparts was quite impressive to behold—you recall it well, I’m sure. ”
His gaze shifted to regard the other man, gently squinted now—glinting with a mild sort of amusement.
You and I knew strange corners of life.
F. Scott Fitzgerald (via bnmxfld)
preposterousbutitworks asked: " well, i suppose you could start with an apology. "
“ An apology? Why, my dear Doctor, I haven’t the slightest notion of what you are referring to. ”
His eyes were ever so moderately squinted, and he maintained a seemingly pleasant exterior demeanor—the subtle curve of his expression suggesting of very little, save for a brief twitching at one corner of his mouth.
He gave a rudimentary pause, and then began once more with a delicate clicking of his tongue—lowering his gaze towards the TARDIS console.
“ You should know that I endeavor to avoid doing anything that I cannot wholly substantiate, surely—therefore leaving very little need for atonement. ”
Absently, he ran a gloved hand over top of several flips and switches—clearing any dust that may have settled there. Then, he lifted his eyes—regarding the other man with a silken, temperate smile.
“ Come now, I had no wish to frighten the young lady—I simply conveyed the honest truth as best I knew it. Even you cannot fault me for candor. ”
I’m full of odd sensations, all of them cold.
Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet (via weltenwellen)
preposterousbutitworks asked: " you know, i never thought much of the second kraal army. "
His expression gave a faint, humorless twitch—barely perceptible, but nonetheless present, and he took a moment before formulating a response—sniffing delicately.
“ —indeed. Courteous as ever, I see. Always outdoing yourself. ”
The line of his mouth had tightened, and he lifted his chin a fraction—keeping his features neatly schooled, with a haughty, contrived sort of dignity.
Gently, he cleared his throat.
“ Suffice to say that I found them to be a necessary grievance at the time. My options were somewhat restricted, as you may care to remember. ”
He’d never quite established eye contact, and his gaze remained averted now—coolly squinted. His tone harbored a tense flicker of disdain, however—it remained smooth, and falsely pleasant.
With a closed mouth, he smiled.
“ Do trust that none thought less of them than I. ”
Very well, we’ll wait until you change it.
preposterousbutitworks asked: " satisfied? "
His gaze flickered, and he shot a reproachful glance towards the other man—choosing to respond in a tight-lipped manner, evidently displeased.
“ Despite your mulish lack of cooperation? Yes, I suppose—miraculously. ”
With due diligence, he snapped either of his gloves at the wrist—taking care that both should remain in place, and he gave a delicate sniff—raising his chin. Speaking as though the altercation between them was of no consequence to him.
“ Say what you will, Doctor—in the end, my methods shall always speak for themselves. A little attention to detail rarely fails to yield preferable results. ”
His head remained lifted—held high, and he stood perfectly square, the image of pragmatism—however, his eyes were ever so moderately averted, preferring to look just past his counterpart’s shoulder.
“ Of course, I would scarcely expect you to appreciate such a fine distinction. I am a man of reason, after all. ”
