Purse in hand, he spread his arms in a careless shrug when he received no response, following after him. ❝Hey! Rabbit guy…! You ignorin’ me or what?❞ He’d been warned about Jax’s somewhat antagonistic streak, but as far as he knew, he’d done nothing to piss this guy off thus far.

From the second they landed in yet another dull slice of life adventure, the only thing on the rabbit's mind was figuring out exactly how much chaos he could cause in the span of the episode. Jax watches with feigned interest as they all split pretty evenly into groups; Zooble and Gangle, Pomni and Ragatha, Kinger and . . . Kinger. Which left him and the newbie.

Great. "Tch." With a click of his tongue, Jax turns towards the opposite direction, hands fisted against his hips as he saunters toward the mall kiosks with NPC's trying to aggressively sell their wares, and it's only when he hears the 'Rabbit Guy' comment that he realizes he's not as alone as he'd thought.

"Wow, nothing gets past you, huh?" Comes his sarcastic drawl, and without so much as looking back over his shoulder at him, the only acknowledgement he gives is a flick of one ear, pointed back towards the newcomer. "I wasn't ignoring you, I'm just choosing not to acknowledge your existence 'cause I've got better things to do. Like, start a fire in the food court."

{❤} -- ❝…Yep. “Insufferable b█st█rd”, I can see it now.❞ Fang remarked pointedly, referencing the unflattering appellation used by one of the other colourfully decorated characters – Zooble, was it? – when he’d asked around about the incredibly elusive cartoon rabbit.

Unimpressed by Jax’s petty antics, Fang rolled his eyes, not caring to hide his disinterest in playing those kinds of ridiculous mind games – not that Jax was even looking at him to see it anyway. ❝…Okay.❞ He accepted Jax’s refusal to cooperate a little too easily, balling up the shopping list they’d been assigned and tossing it over his shoulder into a nearby trash can that then proceeded to audibly congratulate him on his deposit because of course it did. Fang was about as enthralled by these meaningless adventures as the next guy. ❝I was gonna suggest we take the escalator up to the bistro-bar and get hammered instead of wasting our time “playing shop”, but I can see that you’re too busy trying to impress yourself.❞ Whatever emotional issues Jax was contending with, they simply weren’t Fang’s problem to solve.

❝Try not to set yourself on fire whilst you’re at it. Or do. Rabbit’s kind of a speciality dish where I come from, so…seeya in the f█ckin’ food court, jackass.❞ Okay, fine – it seemed that even Fang couldn’t resist a little parting shot. A derisive sneer tugged at his newly mammalian features as he moved past Jax, fully intending to succumb to the urge to shove him into the mall’s water feature on the way by. Fortunately for Jax, one of the NPCs stepped directly into Fang’s path, eagerly presenting a tray of conveniently timed free samples of…what was that, exactly? 

Were these tiny plastic sample pots of skincare serum? In what way could anyone trapped inside this technicolour clown show possibly need beauty products?

Fang had stopped caring before he reached the end of the thought.

Now, where the hell was that bar…? ...Of course.

The goddamn food court.

Chris couldn't help but match his laugh with her own. That was the whole point right? She was glad she still looked youthful enough to get comments like that.

"Oh please, don't count me out just because I look like this. You don't even know me," she said, a smile planted on her face as she took the barstool next to him, watching as he went to grab his coat.

{❤} -- Gus, on the other hand, hadn’t been so fortunate as to possess such age-defying genes. He was relatively certain he looked every single damn one of his fifty years, stress practically etched into his features at this point – either due to a glaringly unhealthy dependency on caffeine or the sheer quantity of hate mail he received on a weekly basis.

His brows remained high, incredulous at her insistence. ❝You’re twenty-five at best!❞ he countered with a chuckle, entirely unpersuaded. ❝What business do I have messing around with girls half my age, eh…? I’m sure you’ll still have a great night without me.❞ he placated gently, yet decidedly.

Gus stood to leave, but he was denied the chance to slip into his jacket before she seized the chair closest to him, watching him expectantly. He paused, shoulders drooping with exasperation. Exhaling heavily, he turned to narrow his eyes at Chris.

❝…Really?❞ 

He had to admit, he admired her determination. A reluctant smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, softening his typically impassive expression. He was hardly flattered – but he couldn’t deny he was entertained by her antics. He enjoyed someone who kept him on his toes - albeit in a purely platonic capacity in this instance on account of their respective ages...or, at least, his mortal perception of her age.

{❤} -- ❝Yeah, actually. That was fuckin’ disgusting.❞ Gus emphatically expressed, wiping his face with the back of his sleeve as he frowned in disgust at the empty smoothie container sitting on the counter – thick, green globs of kale & cucumber still clinging to the inside like toxic sludge.

❝Remind me to never lose a bet to you again! Vegetables are supposed to be eaten, not drunk.❞ he grimaced and immediately reached for the coffee machine – as if seven shots of espresso was somehow going to improve whatever unpleasantness was going on in his stomach right now.

❝The fuck are you askin’ me for? I don’t speak ‘chronically online’ either!❞ He thumbed behind him in the direction of his teenage daughter, who was erratically smashing buttons on Guitar Hero Arcade, in the throes of triumph over her previous high score. ❝Ask her. She’ll know.❞

❝I swear to you, man, somebody asked me that exact question only a few months ago. What is it about me that insinuates I have any kind of insight into greenhouse gases?❞ Gus’ voice naturally rose above the noise of the music and arcade machines – not because he was annoyed, but because he was genuinely grappling to understand the relevance. ❝Or is it just that you want me to say I think it’s fake so you can “cancel” me some more?❞

…Okay, now he was slightly annoyed, but that was largely on him. At this point, Gus had managed to annoy himself.

He blinked, a deep-set frown etched into his forehead as he examined the small, red creature incredulously. ❝Am I going fuckin’ crazy or did somebody bring a live crab into my mother fuckin’ bar?❞

He wasn’t annoyed about it, as such. Gus simply could not fathom where in the hell someone would even acquire a live freshwater crab this side of London, let alone why they’d choose to bring it to his establishment. ❝…Y’know what? I don’t even care.❞ He released a long sigh, resigning himself to the bizarre circumstances. He grabbed a pint glass from behind the bar and filled it with water, just below the brim. ❝Here, man.❞ He placed the glass down in front of the crab’s…chaperone? ❝I can’t have that thing dying on the premises…if my kid sees that and it’s dead, she’s gonna go full meltdown on us, and then we’ll both be in trouble.❞

Simone was probably just being friendly, but after his previous entanglement in a life of crime – and the elaborate web of lies spun around his false conviction – opening up to anybody nowadays just felt like drawing a massive target on his back.

If somebody was unaware of the controversy that surrounded him, Gus was usually content to leave it that way.

But now she was staring at him expectantly from across the bar, and suddenly he found himself stalling for an answer. His finger slowly traced the rim of his glass as he exhaled, feigning nonchalance. ❝Easy,❞ Gus found that when he did somehow find the words, they rang truer than expected, effortlessly rolling off his tongue without hesitation. ❝I’m a dad. I love my kids, they’re my life. I wouldn’t be half the man without them.❞

He topped up her glass first, then his. It wasn’t exactly like he could get in trouble with the boss for drinking on the job when he owned the place. Okay, so, it was technically against the Licensing Act, but who gave a shit? Not Gus, clearly. ❝That’s enough about me.❞ He blinked sedately, crossing his arms to lean against the bar. ❝What’s going on with you? You come here to drink every week, and I only know your name.❞ Maybe there was something from her past she'd rather leave untouched, too. ❝So – your turn. You got a husband? Or wife. Kids…?❞

He was fortunate to have made it out with only cuts & bruises. Good thing he knew how to fight and was able to disarm his attacker, he supposed. Thanks for the lessons, Dad. Looks like they came in handy after all.

What bothered Gus considerably more than his injuries was his attacker’s motive. Her. Giselle – his ex wife and her steadily streaming flow of made-up bullshit. Would he ever escape her allegations? Doubtful.

He let out a sigh as his shoulders sagged, squeezing his eyes tightly shut and running a hand over his face in fatigue, content to just sleep this off. ❝…Y’know, I don’t even know how he got in. That window in my office is fuckin’ tiny, man…! The guy must’ve been a snake or something in a past life. Not that I believe in any of that crap.❞ He sniffed and downed his generous helping of whiskey in three seconds flat, immediately reaching for the bottle while ignoring the sharp pain in his side.
