I kind of hate the fact that people think anti-harassment means proship, I happen to get a LOT of anons sending me that shit, like anti-harassment means you don't like bully/harasser behavior, periodt.

i think what it is is that there are a lot of receipts showing antishippers being toxic. there are accounts dedicated to collecting them, so it's no wonder people automatically assume that we're all that way.

antishippers aren't inherently pro-harassment, just like proshippers aren't inherently anti-harassment

Exposing yourself to something that ponders on, explores, or even viscerally digs its nails into trauma isn’t what this post was about. The words “idealizes, sexualizes, and/or romanticizes” are right there.

People are often attracted to those 3 perspectives because it has a blunting effect on the sense of horror and wrongness, but, beyond ‘making a horrifying thing feel Not That Bad’ being an objectively awful idea, this has long-lasting effects and it is absolutely re-traumatizing.

If you want to use exposure therapy, which is the act of controlled, supervised interaction with a trigger, not fucking around with your trauma until you ‘get used to it’, holy shit, what the fuck, talk to a therapist?

this post isn’t saying anything controversial. it’s very concise and to the point. retraumatization is not exposure therapy. at all. this is coming from someone who’s done structured exposure therapy in inpatient and outpatient settings. retraumatization is the last thing you want with healthy exposure.

and if something is idealizing your trauma, you’re not getting any therapeutic resolution out of it. period. all it’s doing is desensitizing you to harmful circumstances and normalizing them. you do not want pleasure responses from vivid traumatic reminders or a blunted affect when faced with danger. that’s the last thing you want with therapy.

i am convinced not one of you know what exposure therapy actually is and is used for. it’s so you can go into basements after being traumatized in them as a child. it’s so you can drive after being in a severe car accident. it’s so you can pet a dog without having to wash your hands 5 times, wash your mouth out with soap 3 times, and wash your hands 5 more times because you got yourself dirty. it’s so you can go into movie theaters after having panic attacks there.

exposure therapy is meant for things you will come into contact with in every day life and to relieve the anxiety you feel in these moments. it’s meant to normalize normal situations. you do not want to numb your fight/flight/freeze response in relation to actually horrifying things.
