2,500-Year-Old Celtic Warrior Burial With Chariot, Gold, and Etruscan Treasures Uncovered in Germany
Archaeologists working ahead of a solar park project in central Germany have uncovered the grave of a Celtic elite buried about 2,500 years ago. The burial, found near Bad Camberg in the state of Hessen, offers some of the strongest evidence so far for the presence of a local ruling class during the early La Tène period of the Iron Age.
The grave appeared during routine archaeological investigations carried out before construction began. What started as a standard survey quickly turned into one of the region’s most important Iron Age finds. A team from SPAU GmbH completed the excavation in about two weeks, allowing construction plans to continue without interruption.
Objects placed alongside the deceased point to a person of high social standing. Archaeologists recovered several pieces of gold jewelry, including rings likely worn on the fingers, arms, and neck. Weapons such as spearheads and a knife were also found. Although no human bones or teeth survived, the collection of artifacts suggests the grave belonged to an elite male warrior.
Among the most notable finds was an Etruscan beaked jug imported from what is now Tuscany, Italy. Such objects were highly prized during the Iron Age and reflect trade links stretching hundreds of miles across Europe. Similar vessels have previously been found at Glauberg, one of Germany’s best-known Celtic sites. The imported jug shows people living in present-day Hessen maintained contact with communities connected to the Mediterranean world.
Researchers were especially surprised by evidence of a two-wheeled chariot buried with the warrior. Wheel hub fittings, axle caps, and iron wheel-rim parts survived in the grave, confirming the presence of the vehicle. Chariot burials are extremely rare in Hessen. Only a few examples have been identified before, and archaeologists say none match the quality of the Bad Camberg burial.
The grave dates to roughly the same period as the famous Glauberg prince, whose richly furnished burial transformed archaeologists’ understanding of Celtic society in the region. The Bad Camberg burial contains fewer luxury goods than the Glauberg grave, though both appear linked to a social elite whose members held influence and status within Iron Age communities.
Officials say the find provides direct proof for something archaeologists had long suspected. Evidence for a local Celtic elite around Bad Camberg had remained limited. This burial now confirms high-ranking individuals lived in the area during the fifth century BCE.
Research on the site is still underway. Artifacts recovered from the grave are being examined by specialists, while advanced X-ray and CT scanning has revealed additional objects hidden inside excavated soil blocks. Those items have yet to be fully uncovered and identified.
Archaeologists hope further study will provide a clearer picture of Celtic society in central Germany. The burial already offers new information about social rank, long-distance trade, craftsmanship, and funerary traditions during a period when Celtic communities played a major role across much of Europe.

Tropical Rainbow Starflower Parasol
It's come to my attention that I never posted the parasol I made for Pride LAST spring! (which also came home with a blue ribbon from a local fair last fall.) I'm much more into bright rainbows with fuchsia pink than the traditional red rainbows, so I fell deeply in love with this yarn immediately.
Pattern is Starflower Parasol by Jenny Amos/bythebeachcrochet, with additional inspiration taken from Marcus Miller/chiaroscurity_designs, who also made the cute rainbow umbrella earrings I'm wearing in this picture of me.
Yarn is Scheepjes Whirl 792 Rainbow Popsicle. It didn't take a whole cake of yarn, so I separated it into mini balls of yarn to be sure I got through all the colors.
Crystals were added using jump rings, and the parasol frame came from Umbrella Joan; it's the 10-spoke Georgia Parasol Frame.
This project brings me SUCH joy, I'm really hoping to finish a matching dress eventually. Perhaps for next year's Pride?

It's time for Trilobite Tuesday! Some trilobite fossils can only be fully appreciated after skilled preparators have completed their rock-removing magic. This includes prime examples of the strange, spinose Middle Devonian genus Radiaspis—one of the more dramatic (and difficult to prepare) trilobites ever to emerge from the fossil-abundant Moroccan Lagerstatte. Few complete examples of this 1.6–3.1 in- (4–8 cm-) long odontopleurid have been successfully extracted.
Overlock Stitch by @clothes_reetzy
Damn, that's useful
Finally a hand sewing tutorial on a hemline that isn't just the ladder stitch! the ladder stitch disappears when you tighten it, but it's not meant for hemlines because it breaks really easily! The overlock stitch is more stable, so it holds much longer, and it won't pucker or warp the fabric!
I'm having so much fun making these!
The rainbow horns are finished, I'm so pleased with how they came out and they still make me think of ice cream
No flowers for these as they're colourful enough, available now on my etsy, use FRIENDOFTINYDINO for 40% off in June!
I've been digging and digging today through everything I can find and it really looks like the shipping option that Etsy is about to make mandatory for US orders simply isn't available to me. I'll keep these physical listings I've made so far up but I'm looking into selling physical items like this on my own site instead in the near future
Then hopefully I can still have these available to the US through other means after the end of June!

Fun fact that, in Denmark, the National Museum has put together a reference collection of LARP (Live Action Role Playing) coins, because archaeologists started finding them in digs and got really confused!
One campaign, Legendernes Verden (World of Legends), minted 10.000 of their tin coins for a one-week LARP, and since they, and most other home-minted LARP coinage, use old Danish coinage terms on their creations, the confusion is both understandable and hilariously complete.
Here's an example:
Those in the know would immediately recognise the inscription "Narabond" as a location withing the fictional Danish LARP world 'Niraham'. Those not in the know would be endlessly puzzled, as it looks perfectly reasonable for, for example, a medieval coin.
