I made myself a pieced and quilted plague doctor mask! 

Not for any real reason, I just realised I could so I did. It took about 5 hours of pattern drafting last night, and maybe 10 hours of actual sewing today.

I couldn’t find any fusible interfacing so instead it has two layers of cotton quilt batting, making it a bit softer and squishier than intended and also very very hot and very very hard to breathe through.

I pulled the lenses out of an old pair of sunglasses, and they can be popped out through the inside because I didn’t do a very good job on finishing the insides of the eye holes. 

The fabric is from a big stack of 10cm squares I cut about a decade ago. I will probably remake the pattern when I get some interfacing with some different prints and a couple of design tweaks, but also it has been a fun 36 hours of hyperfocus on a dumb pointless project and its 50/50 that I am over this now.

I did the second version with proper interfacing and a bit more modern aesthetic in the fabric choices, and since it looks so much crisper I can see all the changes it needs.

Loosely speaking it needs to be: a bit longer, a bit more curved, with the eyes a bit closer together, and for that one annoying six-piece point on the side of the beak to be changed into two four piece points. 

As for a pattern? Yeah, I will do one. ish. I am still making it up right now.

Pattern is up! No promises though, I forgot to go to bed last night so the instructions might be a bit unclear.

The Stunning Astronomical Beadwork of Native Artist Margaret Nazon

Margaret Nazon has spent the past decade building intricate beadwork depictions of outer space. The colorful artworks balance representational and stylized aesthetics set on black fabric backgrounds to depict galaxies, planets, nebulae, and other astronomical phenomena.

Initially inspired by Hubble space telescope images, Nazon’s celestial renderings are part of a lifelong interest in beading. In an interview with Glenbow, the artist shared that she began beading at age 10, but found the density of traditional beadwork to be tedious.

The abstract nature of celestial images allows Nazon to be more interpretive and incorporate different materials like caribou bones and willow seeds that have location-specific or cultural significance. Nazon is Tsiigehtchic, part of the Gwich’in community in what is now the Northwest Territories of Canada. The artist explained that because she is retired, she is able to dedicate significant time to beading, and often rises at 4:30am to begin working. Nazon plans to continue experimenting, including merging her abstract beadwork with her seamstress skills to create artfully embellished apparel.

Nazon’s artwork was most recently exhibited at Glenbow in a group show, Cosmos, and A Beaded Universe at Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. You can read more about her in the Glenbow interview, and explore Nazon’s portfolio on her website.
