If it wasnât for scraps of power she had left, Brooke would end up like rest of the guys - thrown away in the blinding light. Hell, concrete she built up around her legs to remain in one place barely held up. âShut your eyesâ was least said to prepare for⊠This. âSurprisingâ was an understatement in this case. She would never expect Lucas to wield such power. At the same time, there was something thrilling about that discovery, if you could call it like this. And just like that, itâs over. Seconds; and no pressure to be felt on the body, that shocking sense of Nothing at all. pouring all over, stiffness following right after. It takes another second to adapt. Next one Brooke opens her eyes to see Lucas on the ground kneeling among the destruction he was cause of. The sight is just a glimpse she manages to catch to make sure area is clear before approaching him. Glimpse or not, she knew the picture was there to stay. Write that down among the things to gladly get rid of too Wasting no second more, Brooke kneels in front of him, hopefully blocking out most of Lukeâs sight area. âLucas, the area is clear. You are safe.â Her tone was firm, and so was the grasp she laid on conduitâs arms. Despite the fact, that the light from his body didnât spare her hands either, Brooke didnât back off; she couldnât risk it getting on his chest or any vital area - thus, providing other target to clutch seemed like best thing to do. âLucas, look at me.â Bit harsher. Close to an order. Focus, Firefly. I need your attention.
Itâs her. Itâs her voice echoing between the loud buzzing in his head. Sheâs alive. Thatâs all he needs to know.
Still, he knew she wasnât safe yet, being so close to him. Feeling her hand on his arm made him twitch, but she didnât let loose. No.. no she needed to go, to leave him alone, to get back to safety. Until he literally had burned out completely.
âPlease, no, you.. go please,â he stuttered, keeping his eyes shut, but he knew it was already hitting her, he could FEEL it was lashing out on her right now, hurting her.. and that knowledge caused the opposite of calming down. He needed to make sure she was really okay, but at the same time he just wanted her to leave him alone and go hide somewhere safe until it was over.
But she was right. He needed to see her. Just a glimpse. Just a quick look at her, checking on her condition.
Lucas opened his eyes; everything still white, with blue-ish shimmering shadows around the edges â but he still recognized her face. It looked strange, but so incredibly beautiful, like a delicately carved marble statue. There was some smaller darker spots on her body, probably blood, but she seemed okay overall. Thank god.
Another breakout, splitting flesh. This time it was the skin on her arm, a fractured pattern of sharp gleaming cuts and he finally pushed away from her. Or at least tried to. Her grip was strong still, didnât gave in an inch as he pulled against it; Lucas grew desperate and wanted to yell at her â but it was too late. The second he felt it coming wasnât enough to react; a big eruption of light flickered between them until it hit.
Right in her face. Lucas felt his heart freezing for moments, helplessly watched the lightning leaving a broken, glowing trail over her cheek, her whole side, blood following.
No! NO! âPlease Iâm.. no..! IâM SO SORRY âI ..!â
He just wanted to keep her safe, unharmed, protect her from those soldiers â and now he was the one hurting her.
Her grip on Lukeâs arm tightens subconsciously, as the other hand reaches the face where the hit landed. She could take much, but boy, this pain was something that got her to curl up a bit. More, she was nearly sure some groan, curse maybe, slipped out; hard to tell with mind focused on the wound. It takes a while and couple of deep breaths for her to speak again. Even then, she does so through clenched teeth. Still, she tries to keep the tone the same, now with face turned away. âThatâs fair.â Unfortunately, unhelpful as fuck. At least Luke was⊠Reachable. In state he was in it was hard to say whether it was a good or bad thing, though. It didnât seem to stop, and there was no hope Lucas could control his own power at this point. Stay calm and collected my ass. Too bad they never mentioned what to do when your friend autographs your face with light. Brooke rose her eyes back on conduit in front of her. The fact that only one provided clear vision was barely a surprise. Quick thought. Quick decision. âDonât take it personally, but-â Hand curled into a fist, and the fist connected with Lukeâs temple just a second later. She put enough strength into the hit to knock him out. More or less. Probably more âLight show is over.â In no way was it something she would enjoy. They already risked so much though to pull their luck in hope for good ending. You usually have to work for those. And if that meant knocking Lucas unconscious - so be it. Brooke looked at him as the light around slowly calmed and faded - and even minute or two after it burned out completely. âGuess you still have manual switch, donât you?â She almost expected a reply for that. Almost. Itâs hard to expect any creative interaction from limp body. Having made sure itâs safe, woman picked other conduit up and headed back towards their safe place.
âDonât worry.. Iâm not a hero,â was all he could answer before the next grenade crashed full-force against the concrete wall, breaking it, forcing rifts growing from to bottom to the top, more dust and thin light shining through the cracks.
Lucas wanted so say something else. Maybe something cheesy. Maybe something dumb; none of them knew how the story would end â especially with the choice he just made seconds ago.
No, I donât know what Iâm doing. I never do. But even if I fuck it up now.. it canât be worse than losing you.
But it wasnât the time time to say anything of that aloud though, no time to touch her arm, her face, anything to show the massive wave of affection rolling over him in these splits of a single moment; fear turning into desperation. Eyes glowing so bright now, it hurt to look at them, tinting the whole makeshift bunker in a wavering, blue light.
I need you to be fine. Itâll be fine. Weâll both be fine. Iâll keep those sticky words in a little longer.
âS-shut your eyes!â was all he could shout before turning into pure brightness, a buzzing lightning breaking through a crack in the concrete outside.
______________
Bullets hit, but heâs prepared. Counting twelve, maybe fifteen soldiers surrounding them, firing from every direction at him, being the single blazing target, begging to be aimed at. The impacts push him back and forth but he has to ignore the biting pain, needs to concentrate. It has to be big enough to reach them all. Just.. giving it all. With a heart pounding heavily, he doesnât lose another second. His body is ready, so ready, trembling with power andâ â he releases.
The gigantic, glaring detonation of BLINDING LIGHT turns the afternoon city into a white paper-like model of itself, so bright thereâs no shadows telling the objects from the background; itâs like a nuclear bomb dropped right in front of their feet, followed by a huge surge of raw, scorching energy brushing over the landscape; pushing, throwing over vehicles, humans and debris in a growing radius.
It tickles. It tickles so GOOD and hot and BURNING in his veins, in his mind, he wants to scream.
Itâs over in seconds. Not a single gun is fired, not a single voice is shouting commands. Broken glass, metal molten, skin burned. So much destruction.
It still tickles. Vision blue and white, itâs surreal and beautiful; his arms still burned in bright white, like poison running under his skin, made them shake in excitement. Wisps of light broke out of the glow, crashing on the ground to leave ruptures in the concrete everywhere. Hitting deeper, growing violent, faster, draining. He knew how terrifyingly powerful it was. He was. Pure light, lashing out angrily in every direction, the glaring glow crawling up his arms to his shoulders, it BURNED so hot it HURT.
Stop. Please stOP! Lightnings raging over him, cutting into his own flesh, heâs losing it, he canât hold it, itâs breaking OUT everywhere, splitting skin â Lucasâ knees hit the ground, arms wrapped tightly around his chest to suppress the aggressive outbreaks that canât be controlled.
If it wasnât for scraps of power she had left, Brooke would end up like rest of the guys - thrown away in the blinding light. He hadnât kept track of how long theyâd been at this. Sometimes he doesnât even realize her presence. Delsin didnât have much motivation to actually talk but curiosity finally took a hold of him, making him turn ever so slightly to her, lips quirked. âIâll bite,â He practically whispers, âWhyâre you here?â
At first she wasnât even certain he said something. Theyâve been sitting in silence for too long to think of it as broken now, and yet that slight turn proved her otherwise. âThe same reason why people ask questions, dear. Forgive me then being curious how hard you can bite. Arenât you afraid to wander around alone this late?â
It was horrible. The plan she came up with for the whole operation seemed so flawless. Of course, she was clever, she was strategic, she was in control, always. Before they separated back then she was the one getting them through everything the world threw at them. He listened (mostly) and he survived. She made him survive. With her plans, her brain thinking for both of them.
This operation.. he hadnât questioned it ONCE. It seemed easy enough, even with major details changed - she would always improvise. But this wasnât a detail. It had been a trap, a dirty trick to catch her and.. she seemed so lost, so defeated, hit hard by the fact she had been played like this.
Lucas was scared. Like hell. And the second most thing he wanted was to vanish, as quickly as possible, taking her advice and run out of this horrible, dark place, away from the gunshots and grenades, from the yelling and fighting, away as far as possible.
But the single most important thing he wanted was to keep her safe. To get her out of here safe. She came to him to seek his help, and whatever she got them into, she would get this help. Always.
âNoâ, he hushed with his head shaking vigorously, grasping on her arm. Lucas was shivering with fear and a thin, glowing layer spread over his eyes as he blinked rapidly. Maybe from the dust, maybe from the pain in his hand where a stray bullet found an unexpected target. Maybe something else.
âI wonât leave you here.â Scared. But also filled with one burning wish. Lucas swallowed thickly, flinching with every bullet, every crushing grenade hitting the guarding concrete walls around them. They wouldnât hold much longer. They had to do something.
He had to do something.
Good thing that in dimmed light of this improvised bunker her expression was barely visible. Or so she thought. It was the first time she saw Lucas like this. Fellow soldier? Maybe. That mixture of fear and determination, and and that glow in his eyes. It sent shiver down the spine. Just now she realised that fact that he never used his powers for an offensive made her live in fragile illusion that perhaps she finally stood by the good side of the war. And now he was dragged into it, showed the face she used to see from the other side of the gun. Lucas was no fighter. She said it, and refused to see him as one, even now as he stood ready to face the danger head on, defend himself in situation so hopeless. It was a situation that forced it on him, and his choice was to protect interest of someone who not so long ago couldâve been one to aim. It was hard to get rid of the urge to push him away. To just yell at this fool to run, and save himself from becoming goddamn glowing swiss cheese. Instead she just stood there, giving Luke that look of plain disbelief, sentenced to wait for that final blow to crush the defences. âI hope you know what youâre doing.â was the only thing Brooke could say, and even that through gritted teeth. Nothing felt like reason enough to change his mind, and it was obvious an argument right now would only make situation worse, and crush the last spark of hope there was. âJust donât play a hero.â she added even quieter, barely more than a breath compared to sound of walls crashing down.
Was he too excited? Hell, itâs ice cream, you canât be too excited!
âOh sure, Iâll show you the way to the nearest store! And I know the store will look a bit suspicious and the flavors are a bit weird but itâs so good, I can guarantee you!
His name? Why would she..? Oh..oh no he totally forgot to introduce himself. How embarrassing, totally messing up the first impression huh?
âIâm sorry I totally forgot about that, My name is Luca, nice to met you"
With name like this itâs no surprise that anything about this store is suspicious. But why not. Why not to trust a kid who you just met, who just gave you his name about suspicious stuff? Itâs not like anything can go wrong, right? âLuca, hm? Mineâs Brooke.â He looked as if he was about to explode, and honestly Augustine was nearly certain that if he was any more excited, the poor boy would do so. âLead the way then, Luca" Oh I sure hope the store is somewhere close.
..a girl? Conduit girl?
Lucas stood in confusion, a weird smelling drink in his hand and a mind circling around this new information. Halfway relieved for obvious reasons and halfway even more curious now about that girl. What could possible Brookeâs connection to this girl be? A relative maybe? She never talked about her before though. But Brookie hardly EVER talked about anything regarding her former life, so that wasnât exactly something special now.
Lucas watched her walking over to the fridge (probably to get something else to drink since the one she gave him couldnât actually be nice, but we canât let this go to waste can we); seeing that head from behind was so familiar, but at the same time it felt like something was missing. She acted like they hadnât been separated for weeks, but also completely different. It was odd and he wanted to change it.
Well. Time to get a little loose, huh? âUh.. just feel like home I guess? Itâs not the best stuff they got here though.â With a small sigh Lucas gulped down half of the alcoholic content and made a face. Jesus. What you drink, woman, should be prohibited. âI can take a look if they have something better at the lobby if you want?â
âOh donât worry. Weâll deal just fine with what is here. Besides, we still have a lot to catch up, donât we?â
Before they noticed, two days passed. And they passed so fast compared to the moment they found themselves in after that.
Additional guard shouldâve been enough of a warning. They werenât included in the plan, but she expected some complications. Just as it should be; not too easy nor too hard. But she was blind. blind to obvious signs that something was wrong, pulled by illusion that fit her desire, she saw just what she wanted to see. Risk was calculated. Fuck up was expected.
                        But not to this point.
It was a trap. And she realised it when it was too late. They were cut out from any source of power; no concrete in sight, and of artifical light there was as much as one flashlight just in case of âemergencyâ. Too bad the 'emergencyâ didnât include plan for being locked under a heavy fire, between two units, along with carriage Celia was supposed to be in.
Everything went wrong, crashed on her hands. Again. Again and again, story seemed to repeat itself, and as long as she had something to lose, fate seemed like bound to repeat itself.
Brooke turned her head towards Luke, concern painted out on face. Sheâd create temporary concrete walls to get them some time, but unfortunately, along with bullets they also deprived them of light.
âLucas, Iâm gonna drop one of the wall on the back. When I do, just⊠run for it. Get out of range of their bullets as quick as possible. Youâll be covered.â She made this mistake And he shouldnât pay for it.
Delsin Rowe : Oh my god, thereâs a bio-terrorist! Â Â Heâs so threatening and stunningly handsome! Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â I CANâT CONTROL MYSELF!Â
   bioterrorizing   ||    taggingsmoke   ||   jailbrckenâ   ||   mcsmirky
â° Continued from X || @coatedblade â± Her eyes lingered for a bit on the bill man slid on the counter. âMy, my. Five minutes in the bar and weâve got ourselves a gentleman, hm? Nice gesture. Still, Iâm paying for myself. I donât like the obligation.â Brookeâs look finally rested on him. âYou donât seem like frequent visitor. I would know you. Whatâs your name?â
