The male gaze thing vis a vis Bond girls and Xenia in particular is an issue soooooooo close to my heart. Like, as a character she gets a lot of power from her Performance Of Sexualised Power which is just incredible when you put her in the Goldeneye Triad Of Women: M with the Power Of Rationality (is she just a stand-in for a man? that’s a whole other conversation), Natalya with the Power Of Empathy And Intelligence, and Xenia with the Power Of Ambition And Eroticism. Bond girls are/were so often completely disempowered that all of the women in this film are astonishing. But then on the other hand, as a cultural product, she is a terrifying oral-fixated exoticised sadomasochist who literally kills men with her thighs and gets sexual pleasure mowing down computer programmers with a machine gun, what a *truly horrifying* depiction of the monstrous feminine, omfg. So, the empowerment/disempowerment issue is huge here, the agency/object issue, the whole problem of women’s acts of empowerment being determined by patriarchal systems of what Womanhood should be, what Power should be, etc. etc. etc. the point is, let me talk about Goldeneye forever.

(Oh wait, once upon a time I gave a lecture about the male gaze and I made it all about James Bond movies so I guess I got my chance.)
