no wonder so many people have started to rely on ai so heavily. there is an entire demographic of people who are mortally terrified of ever asking another person for help, or showing vulnerability to any other person, so of course when you create the Machine That Helps* You And Acts Like Your Friend they’re gonna become hopelessly dependent on it. because individualism and the idea of everyone being self-sufficient doesn’t actually make people more competent, it just isolates them from the others around them and prevents them from growing and stepping out of their comfort zone. generative ai is so appealing to investors, not just because it is able to stealthily collect data to sell and can be used to cut costs, but also because it monetizes isolation. to be alone is to be vulnerable, and it is very easy to manipulate the vulnerable. with generative ai, the process itself of isolating people becomes profitable, to a degree that hasn’t been as wide-reaching and plainly visible in perhaps any other invention.
