This open-air bronze statue, installed in Copenhagen in 1913, has been damaged and defaced on several occasions, most recently in a string of incidents that have seen the work repeatedly vandalized by political protesters, ranging from pro-democracy activists to anti-whaling campaigners. In January 2020, “Free Hong Kong” was scrawled on the rock on which the bronze sits, while the latest incident came in July 2020, when unknown parties spray-painted “RACIST FISH” on the stone, while the statue itself was tagged and covered with stickers.
