The more we find out about Olruggio and Qifrey's backstory the more absurd it is anyone allowed Olruggio to be his watchful eye and expected it to work. Like "would you tattle on your best friend?" is already a stretch. But it's not just that. It's-

"Hey Olruggio, you know Qifrey? The person whose life you saved when you first met? How you were his only friend in childhood? To the point that, when he disappeared, you were the only person Beldaruit could think to ask? (Which worked) How the two of you ran away together and exchanged hat tassels (but you both won't tell anyone the exact details of why and how)? So anyway we want you to live with him and be responsible for his students' well being. By which we mean narc on him to the cops. You'll definitely do that right? Cool."

olruggio has had an utter lack of control over the situation since the first time he learned the truth; his memory is wiped every time it is revealed to him, so he's just left with the pervasive feeling that something is very wrong with his partner (in pain). the shifting landscape and the skewed frames reflect that internal instability

he doesn't have the relevant memories to reach back for. qifrey can cling to the lies, to his guilt, in order to survive, but olly is perpetually lost in the unknowing. the worst part is that the tilted frames of his reality are a very deliberate choice he made all those years ago to save his friend—he just can't remember it

qifrey has his memories intact, so he's able to structure his life around the truth of his existence. he carries it with him; all the grief and resentment, every moment spent in pain and unease. he has no choice but to stabilize himself in liminality. he's not allowed to settle, and so the frames are neatly laid out, one over the other; a perfect prison

his collected expression in the most recent frame makes it seem like he is resigned to his fate, but i don't believe he would give up that easily, not when he has so much to live for (he stated so himself)! he's just tired. they both are

one of the most devastating aspects of orufrey’s relationship to me is the fact that, by qifrey’s own account, olruggio has rediscovered his secret too often to keep track of— and he still chooses to forgive qifrey in each and every instance he learns, again, about the silverwood disease. we can easily assume his finding out manifests differently every time— maybe it comes as a confession, maybe it’s like a twisted problem that olruggio conspires to work out for himself, maybe it’s something blurted in the thick of an argument; maybe it comes with uneasy acceptance, maybe it’s more of a struggle to make olruggio understand— but no matter the symptom, his cause is always the same without fail. olruggio has never once hesitated to sacrifice everything he is for qifrey’s sake; he has never once considered being spiteful, keeping his own memory intact and letting qifrey shoulder his burden alone. in all their time enduring that same, indefinite cycle— ouroboros the whole way down— the thought to act selfishly has never, not even once, crossed olruggio’s mind

i wonder if everytime qifrey erases his memories he thinks he'd kill a version of him... how even if he's still the same it's no longer the person he was...

thinking of olruggio being one of the few qifrey lets touch his scar, and whenever olruggio cups his face it's always on his right cheek, thumbing the scars very gently...
