making my own post bc op is of course entitled to their opinion and i don’t need to be rude in their notes (and don’t you do it either 🫵🏾) but like.

at least in the case of phm Actually one of the big themes of the book and movie is nonromantic love and unconventional relationships being what saves the world. like one of the big themes is that a guy who struggles to connect, can’t keep a partner, and has never formed relationships that are societally deemed as valid, is still worthy of respect and autonomy. and his nonromantic but very deep love for his friend the rock is what allows two planets to be saved.

if this shipping craze were solely about drawing textual parallels i would not gaf because from what i have heard there are many. MY complaint is that i am once again watching a fandom or two file the serial numbers off of two incredibly complex characters to fit them into the white boy of the week shipping dynamics every other fandom experiences when that is EXPLICITLY anti-textual to at least one of those pieces of media. people are refusing to engage with the themes. and it is not lost on me that crossover ships are 4/10 of the top relationships on phm’s ao3 and Carl, who is IN the same piece of media, doesn’t feature in the top 10 at all.

it’s not that phm just isn’t about romance, it’s that it’s specifically about NOT being about romance. and it’s also that the storyline present in the movie itself is being overlooked in favor of playing out the same tired ass mechanics every other fandom does with characters who can be whitewashed enough to make them palatable. which is worth complaining about, in my opinion.

i do wish people would stop projecting yankee evangelical christianity 1:1 (and by extension, the american right-wing) so heavily onto hometown’s religion because it is wildly different on a conceptual fundamental level and also draws upon more forms of spirituality than just christianity. there are comparisons to be made to christian faith in the u.s. bc toby is american and his upbringing ostensibly informs the way he writes religion, certainly, but toriel is not your republican grandma 😭

i haven't seen many ppl talking about it but i really am so happy about Green from the new chapter <:o). It feels so so very rare that we get really good nonverbal characters. It didn't feel like Green's lack of speech was the butt of the joke or seen as bad in any way, and no one tried to make them talk or got upset with them for not talking etc etc like i always seem to see happen in media with nonverbal characters. It just seems like Green Is Just Nonverbal and that's just a normal okay trait of theirs that doesn't need to be fixed. i dunno. it made me really really happy to see as a semiverbal l3 autistic. it's one of very few times i've seen lack of speech treated so kindly

thank fucking god for susie deltarune. like she is the character of all time for 50000 different reasons but right now im like. thank god toby lets her be a teenage girl who is unabashedly tomboyish & physically strong & compulsive & loud & rude & wields a big fucking axe. thank god her arc has been about her becoming More comfortable in being her honest self and accepting that people like who she is. thank god there has been Zero implication in the narrative that she ever needs to become 'more feminine' or some bullshit. susie gets to be susie and i like her so much.
