Cryptid ABCs: Vampire Beast

The Vampire Beast, also known as the Beast of Bladenboro, is a large cat sighted in the 1950s.

The monster was described as being a mix of bear and panther. It was said to be about 4 feet long and around 2 fee high with busy, mottled brown fur. It’s face was said to be very much like a regular cats, with “runty” ears. It also had a cry much like a human baby’s.

It’s name comes from it’s habitual killing of pets and livestock. Several dogs were found either torn to shreds or decapitated and crushed. Cows, goats, and one pet rabbit were among the victims as well. Massive blood loss was also noted in all the killings. Most of the prey was not eaten, which many people found strange.

Naturally, these killings caused a panic, and caused many to search for a logical explanation. Wolves, mountain lions, coyotes, cougars, and even a particular German Shepherd were all put forth as explanations. No one conclusion has ever been reached, but in 2008 “Monsterquest” determined the monster was most likely a cougar.
