irhen's default class in this verse is machinist, though she becomes a red mage after she gets her aetherial tattoos to help with aether sickness. she also dabbles in gunbreaker, though she's a bit too reckless to stick with it.

there are two options for this verse: either she's a contracted adventurer from limsa that aids the scions from time to time, or she's a familiar face around limsa as the heiress to stark metalworks. the reason these two can't really co - exist is simply because she's got the attention span of a worm and would never be able to juggle both.

▎verse notes ▎ this verse is the culmination of effort by lahabrea, emet - selch, and fandaniel’s manipulations of l’irhen and v’senah over the course of msq. lahabrea planted the first seed of doubt in arr, and throughout msq every single ascian build upon his seeds until ultimately fandaniel managed to completely turn them to his own side.

in shb, emet - selch drives home the paradise that the ascians are working toward by giving v’senah and l’irhen constellation crystals and returning their memories of their unsundered lives. as where andi and jia’ying get their crystal from hythlodaeus’ shade in 5.3 as per canon, v’senah and l’irhen are given theirs in early shadowbringers.

irhen is pushed personally to her breaking point when, wanting to prove emet - selch wrong, she approaches the crystal exarch in private to ask him one more time about the truth of g’raha tia. as she’d had what she’d thought was a romantic bond with him in the crystal tower, his continued lie proved to her that the world truly was filled with lies.

even though their comrades, emet - selch and elidibus, are both ultimately defeated by andi and jia’ying during msq, v’senah and l’irhen continue to pursue the ascian’s ultimate goal of the rejoinings, declaring they will return the shards to their promised paradise.

the two of them combat and escape from the scions and fellow warriors of light multiple times before fandaniel approaches them, declaring that he too shares their goals. they are also present during fandaniel’s confrontation with the scions in ala mhigo.

fandaniel continues to take advantage of their naiveté to manipulate them into pursuing the final days, as they had never known the intricacies of the rejoinings and trusted his claims that this was the only way left to rejoin the shards.

𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑫𝑼𝑨𝑳𝑰𝑻𝒀 𝑶𝑭 𝑴𝑨𝑵. After everything they’ve done, the choices they’ve made and the lives they’ve snuffed out like the candles flame, there still sits room for doubt in the back of her mind. How silly, Irhen muses with a bittersweet smile, that even at the end she’s second - guessing herself. The heavens weep in bloodied red, smoke billowing from the earth below as flames engulf the lands, and she swears she can hear the cries of despair as the people give in to their fates. A part of her, a small and broken part that she’s locked away in the deepest recesses of her mind, cannot help but wonder about her parents. Are they well? Did they, too, give up in the face of the end? Are their forms twisted masses of flesh, now?

( She’s sure they died fighting after all, she inherited this stubborn nature of hers from him. )

Flashes of the other two shards of her heart, horrified eyes and tear - streaked cheeks when they’d realised her betrayal. Jia’ying’s disbelief, Andi’s desperate pleas for them to stop acting, she recalls them with such clarity that it rends her already tattered heart to shreds. Still, despite the war of emotions waging in her chest and the way her throat constricts painfully around a wail of regret she won’t allow to escape, Irhen’s voice remains steady and sure. She’s good at pretending. She has to be. ❛ But you? I’d never let you become ash. ❜

Her fingers weave with Senah’s, clasping like a lifeline, and it’s only this that allows Irhen a moment’s respite in the planet’s swan song’s crescendo. It’s too late for regret, she tells herself as she lets her own head fall to rest atop Senah’s, far too late to turn back. This world is an ugly thing, filled with ugliness that must be rooted out at its core, but the idyllic dream of starting anew has soured in Irhen’s mind. She’s forgotten her reasoning now, the reason why she’d turned her back to her cause and her friends and her family, but she knows why she’s stayed the course all this time.

#DEEPDIVE , aka a glossary of terms i personally use for a lot of discussions revolving around irhen's designs and concepts. they're just sort of something i've been using to expand on her and her father's research, and some of it is also used in reference to Kagami as well! ( though it's a less refined version, it's a similar enough concept. )

aetherial ink : specialised ink of the purest quality imbued with aether, though the amount of aether necessary varies from function to function. the concept of imbued ink isn't something that irhen and her father pioneered ( a certain tribe also made use of ink infused with the most minute traces of aether ) but rather the concept of massive amounts of aether being put both into the ink and within a person, acting in tandem to create desired results.

aetherial tattoo : the process to carving a design into flesh, applying the aether - infused ink, and then using the smallest amount of aether to aid in hastening the healing to seal the ink just beneath the skin. it's a long and physically painful process, which is why they're not exactly popular despite the appeal of glowing tattoos, especially so if designed with sigils.

aether reserves : the natural amount of aether that gathers within a person, and often restores over time even with use. most normal individuals have a sort of ceiling to it, a point in which they stop amassing aether until it's unleashed to begin the cycle anew, though their “aether cap” can shift with time and experience. is it based off the mp bar? maybe.

aether flow : the natural flow of aether within one's body. it's not a stagnant force, but more of a living thing, and thus it circulates in tandem with ones heartbeat, much akin to bloodflow. the flow shifts and changes when using aether, such as in combat, and understanding one's own aether is intregral to making the concept of sigil - work function as intended.

apparatus : the full body of the designed tattoo framework, which consists of a large and intricate baseline sigil carved along the flash to act as an anchor for whatever number of matrices are being used. it must go across the entirety of flesh that will be used, meaning that in irhen's case she and her father carved the baseline into well over 70% of her body. the apparatus is integral to the function of sigil - work as a whole, and if it is at all miscalculated one would have to burn out the linework and start all over again.

sigil : often compared to leylines, sigils are patterns that help channel and push the flow of aether to a desired end. sigils are designed with various functions in mind, and even the most minute of differences in the design can have wildly varying results. for example : the sigil itself could be identical, but the key in one could be a triangle, resulting in a stronger sense of balance, while the next could be a square, resulting in a stronger physical fortitude. though they appear the same, they're completely different. sigil - work is a language all on its own.

matrix : the individual part of a larger apparatus, usually designed in pieces to achieve several goals within it. a matrix is made up of various layers of sigils, though the number and complexity depend on the purpose. for example : the matrix on irhen's back consists of thirty - eight layers of sigils, each keyed to the functions around general balance, aetheric balance, and the funneling of excess aether to reduce aether sickness from teleportation. while it appears as simple a large back piece with floral designs, the sigil work invisible to the naked eye is intricate and impressive.

Irhen's body is covered in aether - imbued tattoos, which were designed by herself and her father in hopes to alleviating Irhen's struggles with using aether. While she was born with an exceptional amount of aether at her disposal, so much that she can suffer from aether sickness if she doesn't expel a small amount each day, Irhen lacked any kind of control over it. While trying her hardest to channel her power and cast spells, she could never mould her aether and often over - powered everything she tried. This would often result in magical explosions, which the people of Limsa did not appreciate whatsoever.

While the concept of her tattoos was designed by herself and the concept pioneered by her father, it wasn't until Irhen met V'senah that she managed to have someone help with polishing the aether apparatus and applying it on Irhen's body. Senah's involvment resulted in the multiplication of the tattoo designs, as Irhen had condensed them all to a single matrix across her back. Instead of keying several functions into a single tattoo, Senah suggested they break apart each function into its own matrix so as to lessen the chances of burning out should she channel far too much.

Each tattoo has a unique function. Her left arm is covered in a full sleeve of flowers weaving up her arm to her shoulder, which acts as a focal point to help her channel aether for spells. Meanwhile, the full piece that stretches all the way down her back is geared toward augmenting her balance to prevent her aether sickness from teleporting and aid in her general balance. She has a small, singular blossom on her right hip that acts as an emergency teleportation seal ( which would send her back home ) and further down, her entire right leg is covered in floral designs that augments her physical endurance for running and jumping.
