Social Media Socially Accepted Etiquette

I brought this up before but I’ve been thinking about this more and more lately..

In 2015 if I don’t say happy birthday on social media does it actually bother people? Even people that are in my family..when I don’t post a picture or write on your timeline..does this bother them? 

It’s interesting because sometimes I feel like it does and I cannot for the life of me understand it.

What about when people die? A friend of mine or say a cousin dies or let’s say someone I didn’t know or knew casually dies. If I don’t post a tribute to them on social media does that make me a callous asshole? Does this mean I’m not grieving? Is this the correct way to grieve? I’m at a loss as to the correct, socially acceptable ways to do things these days.

Enlighten me if you have the answers...

With all the news feeds and tweets and pictures on Instagram.. hearing about someone getting engaged or someone else starting a new job or buying a big screen TV..If I don’t like these updates or pictures am I being rude?
